Subject: Dublin MudGather this weekend? Anyone? From: MudGuard Date: 22 May 02 - 07:34 AM Hi, as I am in Dublin this weekend (and on a bicycle trip in the northwest of Ireland after that), I ask all the Dublin Mudcatters: Are you interested in a small gathering in Dublin (any good pub you suggest) this weekend (25th/26th of May)? If so, please suggest which of the two days, which pub, what time. MudGuard |
Subject: RE: Dublin MudGather this weekend? Anyone? From: brioc Date: 22 May 02 - 08:02 AM I wish I could say Yes! I would love to know who the Dublin Mudcatters are! Even though I live in Switzerland, I come from Dublin and would love to have contact with dublin mudcatters. Have a great visit. Brigid |
Subject: RE: Dublin MudGather this weekend? Anyone? From: GUEST,Declan Date: 22 May 02 - 08:06 AM You would pick the first week-end I'm going to be out of town in ages ! I'm going to Ennis for the Fleadh Nua. Its usually a good place to visit if it can fit in with your plans. A long journey from Dublin though. One good place to meet up for a play might be Hughes's Snug (Chancery St.)- but this would be for an afternoon/evening session only. The regular night time sesssion players would normally start arriving about 9 pm. You could probably stay and join in if there weren't too many - it gets a bit crowded though. There's a pub called Frank Ryan's in Queen Street which has a small snug and is usually happy to see some people coming in to play. The bar in the Brazen Head (Bridge St) is another suggestion. Not much room there if you're expecting a crowd though, and there might be a loud band leaking in from one of the other rooms. The Cobblestone in Smithfield is another pub where good sessions take place, but there are normally booked musicians there at night & on Sunday afternoon. All the above pubs are just off the quays of the River Liffey, to the west side of the city, |
Subject: RE: Dublin MudGather this weekend? Anyone? From: MudGuard Date: 22 May 02 - 08:42 AM Ok, so another suggestion: Friday/Saturday 21./22. of June I am back in Dublin before flying home... And thanks for the pub suggestions - if no MudGathering, I will at least have music to listen to (for joining in I am too new to playing the whistle, though I will bring it with me). |
Subject: RE: Dublin MudGather this weekend? Anyone? From: Declan Date: 22 May 02 - 08:49 AM W/e of 21/22 June sounds better. I can't commit to it at this stage, but we'll see what others have to say and make arrangements nearer to the date. Will you be on-line between now and then ? |
Subject: RE: Dublin MudGather this weekend? Anyone? From: MudGuard Date: 22 May 02 - 09:07 AM I will try to find an internet cafe or some other solutions (some of the hostels might give me a chance...). At least in Dublin I should find something - I am probably in town for at least a few hours in my last week of the holiday (when I catch the ferry to the Isle of Man and on the way back). But no definite dates/times there, I will have to work out which ferries I will take. |
Subject: RE: Dublin MudGather this weekend? Anyone? From: Noreen Date: 22 May 02 - 01:21 PM Isle of Man --> Liverpool, and then where, Andy? Heading eastwards? Let me know if you'll have some spare time. :0) The session at Hughes' is definitely recommended: music played for the love of it, and of a very high standard. Many other pubs host paid, amplified acts, which left me cold. And if you can get to Dublin for a Friday night, you'll enjoy the Goleen singers' club, mentioned above. The night I was there was worth the trip on its own- wonderful! Noreen |
Subject: RE: Dublin MudGather this weekend? Anyone? From: MudGuard Date: 22 May 02 - 01:46 PM Noreen, sorry, not Isle of Man --> Liverpool... It is Dublin --> Northwest-Ireland --> Dublin --> Isle of Man --> Dublin --> Wicklow Mountains --> Dublin --> Munich... (probably, I will just see how it works). North England is on the shortlist for next year's holiday plans though. No other items are on that list up to now. So you have one year to prepare for me ;-) Did you really think I'd come to your area without giving you notice? Andreas/Andy/MudGuard |
Subject: RE: Dublin MudGather this weekend? Anyone? From: MudGuard Date: 22 May 02 - 03:53 PM No Dubliners beside Declan? |
Subject: RE: Dublin MudGather this weekend? Anyone? From: GUEST,Philippa Date: 22 May 02 - 06:10 PM I have no plans to go to Dublin but I heard on radio na Gaeltachta of a concert in Drumcondra Sat night (& I think there's more Fri night and Sat day? I wasn't really listening and then I heard names like Lilis Ó Laoire, Brian Ó Domhnaill, Gearóid Ó Maonaigh and his son (Ciarán, I think, a brillant Donegal fiddler from this musical family) Maybe Martin Ryan can get here with details, sounds like something his friend Antoine might be involved in. |
Subject: RE: Dublin MudGather this weekend? Anyone? From: paddymac Date: 22 May 02 - 06:13 PM When you head out to the NW be sure to swing through Sligo. If it's trad music that lights your fire, stop in at the "Sheela Na Gig" down by the river. Three lads from "Dervish" own the pub, and if they're not on tour they're usually there. Dynamite sessions, every night but Wed and Sat. |
Subject: RE: Dublin MudGather this weekend? Anyone? From: GUEST Date: 22 May 02 - 06:34 PM If you get the chance to hear Lillis O Laoire--go for it! Don't think twice! It will be the most extraordinary opportunity. He is one of the best of his generation, without doubt. |
Subject: RE: Dublin MudGather this weekend? Anyone? From: MudGuard Date: 23 May 02 - 02:28 AM Thanks for all your suggestions. Drumcondra on this Saturday night is too far for me. I might come thru Sligo, if so, I will go to Sheela Na Gig - I once saw Dervish when they were touring in Germany with the "Irish Folk Festival" - a great band! MudGuard/Andy |

Subject: RE: Dublin MudGather this weekend? Anyone? From: GUEST,Martin Ryan Date: 23 May 02 - 03:51 PM Philippa I'm about to head off to Edinburgh for the weekend so wasn't commenting on this thread since my usual haunts have been mentioned. I believe Lilis O Laoire and some other DOnegal singers are in twon this weekend alright. No details, I'm afraid, Regards |
Subject: RE: Dublin MudGather this weekend? Anyone? From: MudGuard Date: 24 May 02 - 02:23 AM Drumcondra: is that where Drumcondra Road Lower and Drumcondra Road Upper is located, i.e. within Dublin, just north of the Tolka river? Or is it (like Swords on the very end of the Swords road) a village outside? (just asking because my range is limited on a bicycle...) MudGuard/Andy |
Subject: RE: Dublin MudGather this weekend? Anyone? From: GUEST,Philippa Date: 24 May 02 - 02:32 AM I'm note sure now if my memory of Dromcondra was right. It was somewhere in Dublin area and I haven't heard any more. Raidio na Gaeltachta must have a dept. for enquiries. |
Subject: RE: Dublin MudGather this weekend? Anyone? From: Ella who is Sooze Date: 24 May 02 - 03:11 AM Hi Mudguard... If you are looking for some music, try the Cobblestones pub.... Hughes pub Chancery Street sessions most nights. Cor much jealousness! Lucky thing. Have fun. All the best Ella |
Subject: RE: Dublin MudGather this weekend? Anyone? From: Paddy Plastique Date: 24 May 02 - 04:42 AM Mudguard - that's right - Drumcondra is just the other side of the Tolka Only about 2-3 kms out of the city centre. 30 mins walk. Is the venue the old St. Pats Teacher training college ?? Now Arts Faculty to DCU I think. Someone in situ would need to confirm that for you. I, although a Dub, am unfortunately stuck in SW France at present. |
Subject: RE: Dublin MudGather this weekend? Anyone? From: MudGuard Date: 24 May 02 - 07:49 AM Ok, so it is the area I meant. 30 mins walk from there to the city center? I usually walk it in 20 (I stayed a few times in a B&B in Drumcondra road Number onehundredsomething...), and once in a hurry did it in 12... MudGuard |
Subject: RE: Dublin MudGather this weekend? Anyone? From: GUEST,Philippa Date: 24 May 02 - 11:53 AM not Drumcondra, but Dundrum. 8 pm tonight Lilis Ó Laoire & Cathal Ó Searcaigh )poet) 8 pm tomorrow (Sat 26 May)Donegal musicians. I don't know the venue, I think the performances are in connection with an art exhibiton at the Bank of Ireland. As I said before it might be possible to ring Raidio na Gaeltachta for info. as they announced this event on the message programme. And probably Áine Hensey will say something about it on Raidió Éireann (RTE) tonight, her programme is the Late Session, 10-11 pm. |
Subject: RE: Dublin MudGather this weekend? Anyone? From: MudGuard Date: 24 May 02 - 12:28 PM Ah, South Dublin then (I guess you don't speak about Dundrum, Co. Tipperary). I will try to find out the details tomorrow afternoon when I am in Dublin. |
Subject: RE: Dublin MudGather this weekend? Anyone? From: GUEST Date: 07 Jun 02 - 01:10 PM Just a short update. Plans have changed a bit - no Isle of Man because of ferry problems. Will be in Dublin on Friday/Saturday 21./22. of June... Right now I am in Ballina, heading to Sligo tomorrow morning. MudGuard |
Subject: RE: Dublin MudGather this weekend? Anyone? From: An Pluiméir Ceolmhar Date: 07 Jun 02 - 01:23 PM Viel Spass, Schlammwächter. With you in spirit. If you make it to the Cobblestone, say hello from me to Kevin Rowsome (piper obviously) and his wife Lorraine. They play there regularly, and were with us in Belgium recently. If you don't make it there, I can still strongly recommend Hughes's (sometimes there's a general session in the main lounge and a breakaway Donegal fiddle session in the snug at the front of the house). Roger |
Subject: RE: Dublin MudGather this weekend? Anyone? From: Ella who is Sooze Date: 11 Jun 02 - 03:38 AM Ahhhh Ballina. I love Ballina, it's the place of the first Fleadh Cheoill Na Eireann that I went to. Brill place, had a great time in Ballina... Ahh I remember when. Sigh... E |
Subject: RE: Dublin MudGather this weekend? Anyone? From: GUEST,MudGuard, in Cybercafe in Donegal Date: 12 Jun 02 - 06:22 AM another update: when in Sligo, I went to the Sheila na Gig, but they had no music on that night, so I went to Foley's. Been to Enniskillen, now in Donegal. Whole place was a big party last night after Ireland proceeded to the next round in the football (soccer) championship... MudGuard |
Subject: RE: Dublin MudGather this weekend? Anyone? From: Noreen Date: 12 Jun 02 - 09:31 AM What a time to be in Ireland, Andy! Even happier, smilinger(!) faces than usual. Have you played your whistle for anyone yet? :0) Keep in touch. Noreen |
Subject: RE: Dublin MudGather this weekend? Anyone? From: GUEST,MudGuard, CyberCafe in Dublin Date: 18 Jun 02 - 04:05 PM Hello Noreen, lots of sad faces now... No, not really, tonight is the big homecoming party... And yes, I played my whistle almost daily, sometimes just for me, sometimes for some people in the hostel. And on Saturday night in Fintown, Donegal, I played the first time in a pub session!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tomorrow I'm going to Glendalough :-) MudGuard |
