The strange word in the thread title refers to The Friends Of American Old Time Music And Dance whose website is here.

We're having the first of our two major camps this year on the Spring Bank Holiday weekend at Sacrewell Farm, just off the A47 on the Peterborough side of the A1. Here's a map.

We'll be getting there during Friday and leaving Tuesday afternoon, and playing Old Time music for the whole time. There should be around 40 or so folks, mostly good players. It costs, I think, £2.50 per day to camp. There are good facilities and a restaurant for lunches & breakfasts only, and a superb farm museum. It's a large field, but we'll be very easy to spot - fiddles, banjos, guitars, basses, etc. We pick round a campfire in the evening or in the Henhouse if it's wet (much better than it sounds!). Bring your instruments, your voice or just your enthusiasm.

The Southern Appalachians are alive and well in the middle of England, and anyone's welcome.

Cheers
Ray

On behalf of FOAOTMAD, thanks for the plug Ray - hope it goes well and the weather is good. I suspect the south west UK contingent will probably be at Stanchester festival - www.odtime.fsnet.co.uk - back to normal next year without the changes to the Bank Holiday due to the Jubilee celebrations.

Having caught people's electronic eye, if you're in the UK (or anywhere!) and are an Old Time music fan, you would find it most worthwhile to join FOAOTMAD - for more details follow Ray's blue clicky.

Also can I draw OT enthusiasts' attention to a double double (2 sets of 2) cd release 'Far In The Mountains', mentioned in another thread and available from Musical Traditions www.mustrad.org.uk. Excellent value.

Nick, FOAOTMAD secretary

It's this weekend, and I'll be there from the middle of friday afternoon - the sooner the better. Disaster - the hen house no longer exists. Apparently the council ordered it demolished - but there are other buildings we're welcome to use, so no problems whatsoever. I can't wait.

We're going to have to have a session of chicken tunes to mark the passing of the hen-house:
Cluck Old Hen
Hen Cackle
Who Broke The Lock On The Hen-House Door
Chicken Reel
Hen's March to the Midden (British Old Time!)
Anybody know any more?

Cheers
Ray

Hi Ray, apparently there's a new (?) hen house. I'll have to wait for the A! festival to see it. Oh, and I've joined the realms of the Mudcatters... Nick

The 2003 camp starts on Friday - location etc details in the first message in this thread. Last year's was great - learned a lot of new Old Time tunes, and played loads of old familiar ones with some fine musicians

Looks like I shall be forced to attend, as "she-who-must-be-obeyed" is definately going.
We will be sharing a tent (hope it aint the upstairs room) with Graham Anstee. We can put up with him, he says, if we can put up with his banjo!
Any shanty sessions planned???
Oh well, I can only hope.

Sorry, Dead Horse, they tend not to sing many sea shanties a couple of thousand feet up in the Appalachians, though a few of the old songs are strongly related, like Hogeye Man. I think many shanties were made up by people who'd been to see minstrel shows, as were the old time songs.
Cheers

I should have made mention of the Beverley festival weekend June19 where we are introducing OT,sessions at nellies, we may have visits by some of the artists eg Darrell Scott, Acasha, and the landlady has offered the venue for regular OT sessions and meetings. Interested parties can book through the festival office hannah@adastey.demon.co.uk

OOMB - We are still interested in the idea of an Old-time session if times and days can be fitted into our somewhat limited available time.
Please make sure we know what is proposed!
Quack!
Geoff and Jane.

Well the time has come again. The Spring Camp is this weekend, and Geoff The Duck and Jane have told me they'll be there. This year the price has gone up to the ludicrous £3-50 a day for Foaotmad members and £4 a day for others. This is an incredible bargain - we'll have maybe 50 good old time musicians and families playing songs and tunes for three days, with loads of sessions, impromptu workshops, a campfire and maybe some Appalachian dancers. Carl Jones and Beverly Smith who are touring the UK (Carl and Beverly) have told me they'll try and get there, having heard all about it.
Cheers
Ray

Shambles - the Not Stanchester weekend does not clash with the Spring Camp this year. Some information here. This doesn't give the exact location - I believe it's on June 3-5 at Stoke St Mary near Taunton - I'll find out and post it. (Not Stanchester is an Old Time picking weekend that used to be at Stanchester School near Yeoville)

'Not Stanchester' - Yes indeed follow that link. Look for the camping signs. Arrival on the Friday is - I understand - expected! Well, I'm going to be there on the Friday and Sunday (busy elsewhere on the Saturday).

Otherwise have a great time at camp you lucky devils. I understand Beverly Smith & Carl Jones hope to be there on the Sunday following the final gig of their tour on Saturday at Selby.

Nick - where is Not Stanchester in Stoke St Mary - the map tells you where the village is, but no details of actual location.

It's near the pub (name escapes me but I think there's only one) and the other landmark is Parson's Landscaping. Look for the camping signs. Hopefully Derek will put up something more obvious on the day.

It's a very small village - you could probably hear the banjos from the centre!

Why thank you, Gerry - I surely will!
We don't have the henhouse this year but if it rains we do have an excellent barn with ancient farming implements festooning the walls. If it doesn't rain of course we have the camp fire - or anwhere else.
Cheers

Well it's back this weekend - its never yet failed to be a complete winner of a long weekend of Old Time jamming.
Some of us are getting there on thursday, so it'll be even longer!
This year it's £4-50 and £3-50 for members and their children and £5-50 and £4 for non-members & kids for any of the official nights (Fri, Sat, Sun). Other nights will cost the standard campsite rate which is a few quid more.
Be there if you want to get your head round some old time tunes, and improve your banjo/fiddle/guitar abilities.
