a sorta-maybe should-a put BS: onto this, but the Vermont Renaissance Festival will be being held the first three weekends of June at Fort Drummer State Park near (in?) Brattleboro, VT.

I'll be performing there as a wandering singing character; and I know at least two other mudcats will be performing there as well.

So - what are the chances I'll see anyone else there?

(reaching to turn up the thermostat a tad) Well, BigBro, you would probably see more folks if you titled the thread:

Catters Featured, June VT RenFest!

or

MudGather, VT RenFest, June?

... but I know you are shy, and so if you don't make a new thread, I just might! *G*

RenFest, ShmenFest, but a chance to see YOU--- that's different!

*G*

Oh, and where can people hope to find you, at the faire? Will you be dressed as shown in yor Mudcat photo?

~Lil Sis (the pushy broad)

I'll be wandering around - and I will be dressed somewhat like my mudcat photo (hey - I'm lower class - there ain't many options )

I will be performing as "Owain Cramp" - y'see, Owain has always wanted to be a minstrel - and apprenticed as one at the age of 12. Thirty five years later...well - you have to come and find out.

well - the ren-faires are an entertainment venue; and I do it because 1) it's fun 2) I enjoy watching OTHER people have fun 3) it's harmless fantasy that helps get through the drudgery of the workaday world 4) it's fun 5) I like to think that I am contributing to others happiness 6) it's fun

Why do the Germans have a Star Trek festival and pretend to be Klingons? Why do some people hide behind anonimity?

Thanks to those who stopped in and/or allowed me to accost you! (Believe it or not, mudcatters and or mudcat lurkers AND even some mudcat offsring! made up a significant percentage of people on the shire saturday - add in the morris dancers (who should all be mudcatters in spirit *grin* and it was practically mudcattville!)

Especial thanks to those morris dancers who turned the badly misnamed "pub sing" into something actually beginning to resemble a pub sing! I mean no offense to the faire - and the show is lovely; but I have problems with a "pub sing" that really does not incourage audience participation - but there are many ways to do things - and no reason they sohould have to do it *my* way. We did have a lovely lively audience in the pub on Sunday - and got to do a couple of rousing number with people chiming in.

How much of that mud was local Vermont, and how much was from Penn Yan/Branchport?

Its a pleasure to finally put a face with the name. Hope to visit more next year (assuming that the Morris Dancers will be asked back)...and thanks for your kind words concerning the pub sing.

Pub sing? What's a pub sing at a Ren Faire, and how do I organize one at ours?

I was at Valhalla Ren Faire in South Lake Tahoe last weekend, and will be again this weekend. Then at Fair Oaks, north of Scaramento, June 22-23. Have fun in Vermont, you guys.

As for why people do it, it's fun playing dress-up. If you like history, you dress up as somebody historical. If you like science fiction, you dress up as a Klingon.

pub sing - a number of street characters plus musicians if available - do sing-along type songs (usually tending towards the bawdy) - also usually in or near a pub.

Frequently the format is one of the characters is sort of the "Master of Ceremonies" - though it depends on the setting; Usually a character leads a song - or in the case of some songs each character will take a verse - the characters as a group help the audience learn the choruses, encourage singing, etc.

Several faires use a pub-sing type performance to end the day - Sterling intersperses songs with a farewell speech from the Queen; KRF usually has a mix of performance pieces with audience sing-alongs; Maryland (I think) is similar.

Maryland is indeed similar, MMario. In fact, I believe it was our own Peter Benson (once of Yorkshire, England...no, really!) who helped organize the first ever Ren Faire pub sing with the intent of making it as close to the feel of an English Pub as possible.

We do still have an "MC" of sorts, usually the associate Entertainment Director/Musicians liason, and a very rough outline for a plot. Along the way, there is a lot of singing, some dancing, a little story telling, a lot of humour, and a lot of encouragement of audience participation. We have characters all through the Pub who are supposed to help people with the lyrics, raise toasts, and lend focus to whatever is happening on stage. And, in past, the man who played King Henry the VIII would stand and deliver a final speech. This past year was amazing...he crafted the most wonderfully poigniant monologue that touched on the issue of September the 11th, but kept it strictly in character and period. He had me in tears most weekends, even though it was the same speech.

And, more sadly, we have lost the actor who portrayed him for more than 10 years now. He past on just after this years show. Things will definitely be different this year. Pub Sing will never be the same, that is for sure.

It has not been a good year for Royalty at the Ren-faires, all round. (Another "Royal" I've worked with is battling cancer - and another I know of broke a leg)

I know visiting MD is going to feel more then a little strange this season.

Does this mean that you'll be there the weekend of the 15th 16th? If so, I'll hope that there AREN'T enough sign ups for that cooking class, and will circulate a note to a few of my buddies. Sounds like a lot more fun than trying to teach folks how to use unusual ingredients. I realize that Montpelier may have little to do with your route of travel, but if it is en route, consider it a possible stopping off place. Oh, and are you diong Old Songs too?

One weekend left in Vermont - but Sterling opens the last weekend of June!!!!

I got to sing my "puppy" song this weekend - 'The Wolfhound' (by alan of oz) - based on the legend of Beth Galert (spelling?) - and we WARN them it is a sad, sad, song...but the stunned faces when I finish are almost funny - they don't believe us when we tell them it is a sad song.

JeffP...We'll do our best, that's for sure. They have hired the new Henry, and he sounds like quite a gem! It will be very helpful to go to rehearsals and meetings and get the introductions out of the way so that, when they open the gates, we're all feeling comfortably friendly.

well; I have to admit I was sitting on a rock just singing for the heck of it (bucket on the ready of course if anyone should want to contribute to the "hat") when a patron stopped - and then proclaimed loudly to those around her "This guy and the woman he sings with -- best damn act in the place! You have GOT to go see them!"

(Of course we are scheduled opposite Empty Hats - which means since they had seen us they hadn't seen them)

But the best part - singing down by gate while people were waiting for the shuttle bus - and having several toddlers just stop - and stare - and smile - and dance...or the one that was crying - and I showed him I could do it too - which had him laughing...

CelticSoul: The BAND has been around in some form since the mid 90's - there's some debate, but next year MAY be our ten year anniversary. I've only been with 'em since last August or so. You've likely seen me if you've been to Southern since '93 though - as one of the Seadogs.

Mmario: Entertaining to those leaving is one of the best things I think ANYONE can do for a faire. I can't tell you how many friends have gone to a faire and can't stop talking about "Those mongers that had the heart as we left" or "The puritans damning us for having gone" or what have you. Those are the moments that make new faire fanatics... glad to hear you're making them happen.

SeanM!! Dayum, but it's a small world!! I did indeed catch many a show of the Seadogs the year I was out there, and even spoke to a few folk. I wonder if you were there that weekend??? Couldn't tell you now what weekend that was, as that was a lot of years ago, but it does make me wonder if I happened to meet you, and now have no idea that it was you.

Mmario...that is just too funny!!! *THAT* would have been worth the price of admission alone, showing that kid you could cry too. I'll have to borrow that this season. The other story is wonderful...and don't kick yourself...maybe they *have* seen "Empty Hats", but prefer you!

well - have to admit that for one of the ladies (the dowager countess) it was an act and perfectly in character. not sure about some of the other's reactions.

yep - my parents made it - they saw two of my shows - my dad was the "handsome young man" for a performance of 'Maids when you're young' and we managed to get them both laughing over various lines of Drunken Sailor and Roll Your Leg Over. They also got a kick out of Lolly Foy's "Angus and the Kilt". Also had a young couple there - so used my parents as an example (58 years!) and sang the two couples "Sir James' Reply'

lessee - in reaction to "These are the people responsible for me" my mother's reaction was But we try not to admit it!" (They did get into the spirit of things)

They said they enjoyed things - but felt the entire cast was a bit lunatic, but at least it's a "safe outlet".

Their best comment was the laughter - neither are prone to showing much (if any) emotion in public; to get laughs was high praise!

Your "parent" story sounds wonderful though! It's always a hoot to get usually placid and sedate people to laugh...especially if the stoic in question is a relative.
