The phrase "are you looking at me" gets 8,560 hits on Google. We need a way to narrow the search. Can you quote any more lines from the song?

Ricky Tomlinson recorded ARE YOU LOOKIN' AT ME on his album "Music My Arse" (2001). I couldn't find lyrics, but there is a video at YouTube.

(There are also videos called ARE YOU LOOKING AT ME by Colin Hay and by The Ferrets but those are different songs.)

Those lyrics would be difficult for me to transcribe. The tempo is fast, the diction and sound quality are not that good, plus there's the accent. All I know for sure is that the phrase "Are you looking at me?" is repeated many times.

Also, I couldn't find any evidence that this is a music-hall song.

'"ARE you looking at me or chewing a brick?"

What a beautiful Liverpool term of endearment from an age gone by - and it's the title of the new song from the man who seems to be absolutely everywhere at the moment - Ricky Tomlinson.'

Found on the www.

What'cha think you're staring at?
Curiosity killed the cat
I'll take you outside and give you a slap
Are you looking at me?

Who'd you think you're talking to?
You're looking at me, am I looking at you?
We wanna see what you can do
Are you looking at me?

Are you looking at me?
Are you looking at me?
Are you looking at me?
Are you talking to me or chewing a brick?

Are you looking at me?
Are you looking at me?
Are you looking at me?
Are you talking to me or chewing a brick?

I'll give you a Dublin upper cut
That will feckin' shut you up
I'll take you outside and give you the nut
Are you looking at me?

Who are you calling a lunatic?
Get outta that, you're taking the mick
Shut your face and zip your lip
Are you looking at me?

Are you looking at me?
Are you looking at me?
Are you looking at me?
Are you talking to me or chewing a brick?

Are you looking at me?
Are you looking at me?
Are you looking at me?
Are you talking to me or chewing a brick?

I'll teach you a lesson you won't forget
When I finished you'll wish we'd never met
Shut your mouth, I can smell your breath
Are you looking at me?

What'cha think you're staring at?
Curiosity killed the cat
I'll take you outside and give you a slap
Are you looking at me?

Are you looking at me?
Are you looking at me?
Are you looking at me?
Are you talking to me or chewing a brick?

Are you looking at me?
Are you looking at me?
Are you looking at me?
Are you talking to me or chewing a brick?

Talking to me or chewing a brick?
Talking to me or chewing a brick?
Talking to me or chewing a brick?

Sorry to cause so much work for you, Joe, but when I put LYRIC ADD into the subject line and try to post the lyrics, the post never takes. I'd like to note that without the leg work of Jim Dixon, I'd have been down blind alleys for hours. And Jim finding no indication it was a music hall song is apt and incisive. The copyright is 2001 according to that link. There is a site out there with a midi file of the melody, btw.

I think this song was written by one of The Popes - Shane MacGowan's post pogues band. My mate met a barber who claimed to be writer.

The phrase "Are you talking to me or chewing a brick?" was documented as part of Liverpool folklore in Fritz Speigel's "Lern Yerself Scouse" published around 1965.
If you want to give it that authentic Scouse feel, 'talking' rhymes with Christopher Walken's surname, and the 'ck' of 'brick' should be like the 'ch' at the end of the Welsh word for small, 'bach'
Cheers
Dave
