Apologies for this totally un-folk topic, but I suspect someone might know.

As the thread title says, why are so many shopping centres (particularly in Northern England) called 'The Arndal Centre' Was there a 'Mr Arndale' or something?

Grateful for any thoughts on this trivial matter

Pete

'Arndal' = 'Arndale' (obviously)

I'm fairly sure they were originally built for a group with a name like 'Arndale Holdings' or some such who had seen the success of the American malls and wanted to try something like it in the UK. I've no doubt I will corrected if I am wrong.

Being a purveyor of useless trivia. Arndale comes from two Northern English chappies who saw the potential of 'shopping malls' one was called (I think) Arnold haggenbach (?) and the other was ? Chippendale hence ARNDALE. A lot of there centres have been revamped and name changed e.g. Doncaster has become Frenchgate Centre but Manchester retains the name Arndale. Another tHRE in this series is ADDIDAS which comes from the amalgamation of ADolph DASler (he liked to be called ADI) and the H UMphrey BROthers UM and finally AMSTRAD Alan Michael Stuart TRADing

Don't you just wish that the IRA had placed the Manchester Bomb on the other side of the road?

MC Fat - useless trivia and scant regard for detail...
Arnold Hagenbach and Sam Chippindale were the men, and the AMSTRAD man is Alan Michael Sugar.

Saucer of milk for Watson. Considering the info is straight from the one working brain cell which was polluted by Tomothy Taylor's Landlord last night I don't think I've done too bad but that was before I met the spokesperson for the Pedantic Trivia Quiz Answers Storm Troopers.

Two tings 1. I had a Scottish mate who nearly got barred from this strange pub for calling it Rentman 2. I once went to a fancy dress party with the theme of Beers of the World in my normal attire but with a rent book pinned to my chest with the words nameof landlord - Jim name of tenant - Timothy Taylor
