Lewssee - any I am hearing sung by Barry Finn, Celtic Soul, and a few others. I imagine I'd pretty well like any I'd hear sung by a number of other people as well - but haven't had a chance yet!

There's one I like that has a main "hook" line (repeated refrain line) "A ... wouldn't do me any harm." [I've heard such verses as "A pint of good ale wouldn't do me any harm," "A night with a lass wouldn't ...", etc.] You can insert whatever it is that wouldn't do you any harm. I couldn't find this in the forum or DT, and I don't know the name.

I also like Haul Away, Joe; Banks of Sicily; New York Girls; Ridin' On A Donkey; and several of the ones mentioned above.

Translated ( but not by me )

1. Never was there maiden sweeter,
Hob y deri dano
More alluring, livelier, neater
Hob y deri dando
Nor one to my fancy nearer
Jane, sweet Jane
There is no one I love dearer

Chorus:

Jane, run down the lane,
There in the grove we'll kiss again
Jane, run down the lane,
There in the grove we'll kiss again

2. Blessed are the wild birds flying
Hob y deri dano;
They're full free, there's no denying,
Hob y deri dano;
Free to linger or to hasten,
Jane, sweet Jane;
And come home with none to chasten;

Chorus:

3. Now, o'er seas, my heart is crying,
Hob y deri dando;
O'er the seas, O hear me sighing,
Hob y deri dando;
O'er the seas my soul comes winging,
Jane, sweet Jane;
Where your golden voice is ringing,

Chorus:

Jane, sing in the the lane,
There in the grove we'll kiss again
Jane, sing in the lane,
There in the grove we'll kiss again

-or-

1. Low ye hills in ocean lie
Hob y derri dando
Hide not Meirion from my eye
Hob y derri dando
Still one view oh let me take
Down derri down
Ere my longing heart doth break
Chorus:

Down down hie derri down
My darling Mary do not frown
Down down hie derri down
My darling Mary do not frown.

2. O'er the seas hath flown my heart
Hob y derri dando
O'er the seas my sighs depart
Hob y derri dando
And o'er the seas must she be sought
Down derri down
Who lives yet always in my thought

Chorus:

3. 'Neath the seas shall I reside
Hob y derri dando
'Neath the water and the tide
Hob y derri dando
For my longing heart did break
Down derri down
When she another love did take

Chorus

Gareth

a lot of people do not seem to know what a sea shanty is, read Stan Hugill, and listen to the ' Keelers ' My own favourite is ' Sally Racket ' obscene but a proper shanty. Love Dave

Hob Y Derri Dando is a proper chantey. It was used at the capstan.

I should add that it was probably originally a shore folksong, later adapted by sailors for shipboard work at the capstan.

Hob Y Derri Dando (And thanks for the Welsh version, Gareth!)

The Baggies, however use the words from another capstan shanty "Mochyn Du" (Black Pig) to the tune of Hob Y Derri Dando. The Mochyn Du version has the chorus:- "Wuz you ever saw?" Or "Did you ever see, Did you ever see, did you ever see, such a funny thing before?"

You can find a couple of versions of Hob Y Derri Dando in Stan Hugill's book, "Shanties From The Seven Seas."

I finally found the thread I was looking for Lyr Add: Hob-i-derry Dando with great postings from Abby Sale and sian, west wales to name but two.

As Abby said "I think the point of all this is that looking at a single version just doesn't afford the wonderful transitions of the song from Love to satire to chanty to bawdy to sing-along."

Dave -- Little Sally Racket is not obscene, unless you have a dirty mind or think like a sailor. Part of the enduring charm of the shanties and forebitters was their use of hints and innuendoes(sp?; it's very tired out right now). Jack was always aware that a gentleperson might be in earshot of a song and thus couched meanings in words only understood by shipmates and Judies.

Skipper Jack -- the refrain you cite is the same as Cosher Bailey, a Welsh song about a railroad.

Anything from Stan Hugill's books, anything from the Navy song book, and anything from "Shantey men and Shantey Boys" the Doerfflinger book. All the ones on Tom Lewis's CD "Surfacing" And finally - All of them!

One of my newer favorites is this ancient shanty that is an obvious precurser to a 1950's rock song; the chorus and first verse run something like this:

Chorus:

Wake up, Susiana, wake up!
Wake up, Susiana, wake up!

We've both been sound asleep – Umph!
Wake up, Susiana, and weep – Umph!
Blue Peter's flying, there's no denying,
We're in trouble deep!
Wake up, Susiana! – Umph!
Wake up, Susiana! – Umph!
We gotta ship out! (CHO)

There should be more verses, if you're interested, mouldering away in the Mudcat thread tangle.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Haul Away Joe -- I love the bit about "King Louis was the king of France, before the revolution"
But then he got his head cut off, which spoiled his constitution.."
-- Well, sure I guess it would at that, tee hee.

As a kid I listened (often) to Burl Ives' "Down the Sea in Ships" record, which had several real chanteys plus just a lot of lovely and fun songs about the sea -- like Eddystone Light, et multa alia. "Jack was every inch a sailor..."
