I've always loved this song. Big Jon and Sparkie were on my regular radio list, among others. And I learned the words, and sung it to my kids and to my grandkids. Tonite is a friends birthday eve, and I have been looking for something to send her, and I found this out:

My Mom passed away last year. She used to sing that song to me since I was a little girl. Today is my birthday and I miss her. This is how she would sing it and it made me feel so special.

I was invited to teach the song to a group of people at a 100th birthday party. It was beautiful. The celebrant is now 108.

I heard this special birthday song on the Uncle Don radio show -- WOR -- in NYC. Uncle Don's show predated Big Jon and Sparkie by decades, so I think they got the song from Uncle Don, who went off the air before their show began broadcasting.

One person had the same words I know. I love this song and even sing it to strangers if I am in a restaurant or someplace and learn that someone is celebrating a birthday. People love it because it is different. My mother and my aunts taught this to me many years ago and one of my aunts decided to give it a personal twist and in stead of singing: From Mommy and Daddy too, she inserted the names of the wife and whomever is the current President so in 2011, it would be Michelle and Barack too, or Barack and Michelle, whatever.
It makes it fun and I find that many people are so surprised by the song that they often don't recognize the President and First Lady's names and will ask me who they are and then are embarrassed; but I don't ever chide them for that. If I am singing this to a young person, teenager particularly, I will ask, when I am through, who those names belong to; they often don't know either so I tell them; important to do so, I think.

Jon used several birthday songs. Tiger's version used the tune of the "Merry Widow Waltz"

The Dave Williams song was written by Jon and the royalties were sent to Jon's mother. I have a copy from the Memorial Broadcast I helped produce following Jon's death in 1983. The version I have was "sung" by Jon and Ron Wolf when they did a talk show together on KGO. Jon and I were co-workers during his time with Family Radio.

I have found, over the years, that once people get over the shock of hearing a 'different' birthday song, they feel really special when they hear it. There are even some groups which have adopted it after making me teach it to them. Go for it.

Someone sang it last night at our party for my wife's b'day, and now I need to learn it--For those of you who remember, this was a childrens program on ABC radio in the 50's---I would really like to be able to hear the original version--anybody?
