I'm sure there's someone around here who knows this.

Years ago, (70's maybe?) there was a famous situation where a free kick was about to be taken, when a player from the opponents 'wall' suddenly ran out and hoofed the ball into the crowd.

It was a classic moment.

Can anyone tell me who the teams were and when it was? A link to a RealVideo/Mpeg of the incident would be great too (but maybe too much too ask)

I think the incident happened in the 1974 world cup in the Zaire v Brazil game.One of the Zaire defenders ran out of the wall and thumped the ball up field before Brazil took the kick to the bemusement of players and referee

Who was the player who famously kicked away the ball during a game in the 1974 World Cup in West Germany just as the opposition were about to take a free kick?

He was a Zaire defender called Alunga Mwepu. Brazil had a free kick thirty yards from goal. The referee blew his whistle but before the kick could be taken Mwepu rushed out of the wall and belted the ball upfield.

I can still hear Motty saying in commentary: "What did he do THAT for?" Mwepu got a yellow card for his trouble. Brazil won 3-0.

I found that on this site - it's amazing what Google can come up with (I just put in Zaire + free kick, and there it was.)
