Just to let everyone know that the Peoples Voice Folk Festival is open for business on Friday 21st June with an opening ceremony that will have a budget nothing like the World Cup opening ceremony. Come along and join in all the fun.

The programmes are going so fast that I have had to order another 500 to be printed so that we have a few left to hand out on the weekend itself! Have just finished writing up the tasting notes for the 61 beers(including 16 CAMRA Champion Beers of Britain)that will be available in the Sun Inn.

Am now going down to Beverley Beck for a photo opportunity with the Hull Daily Mail for last minute publicity.

And the Sun has started shining at last!!

You poor bastard having to sup 61 beers. People think it's dead easy but Roger you just have to suffer for your art.

Well, as they say - someone has to do it. I'm now waiting for my first taste of the special festival brew from Wawne brewery - we have asked for it to be called "session bitter" because the word session has resonances for both folkies and beer enthusiasts (and I'm both)

I'm cycling from Manchester to York for the CTC Rally this weekend. I'll be coming through Beverley mid afternoon on Friday.

Is there anywhere you could recommend around that time of day for a bit of a sing?

John The festival doesn't actually get going until Friday evening but you may find some early arrivals at the campsite (follow the signs for the Leisure Centre)or, perhaps, in the Sun Inn opposite the Minster - I might be there myself checking up on the quality of the beers.

The beer festival in the Sun has been reduced from 61 beers to 60 - we couldn't get Big Lamp, Prince Bishop but there are still 16 CAMRA champion beers including the current one Oakham JHB.

Oh, and don't believe that weather forecast - it will be a fine weekend.

Just a remeinder to all those who are coming to the festival that, if you want to go to the Sunday afternoon concert in the Westwood Club (Featuring Aiken's Drum, John Conolly and KwameD) you will need to sign up for membership of the club. Membership is free and we just need your name.

There will be sign up sheets around on Friday night and Saturday but you need to put your name on one before 2pm on Saturday.

Just got back from the Peoples Voice Festival and what can I say -it has been FANTASTIC!!!!!! Singarounds music sessions great acts, good food and company, familiar faces and lots of Mudcatters!!! The highlights for me have been the amazing quality of the singarounds -which were wonderfully hosted by Jim McDonald (MC FAT) who at one stage treated us all to his special skills in paper modelling when he produced a to scale model of the Endeavour. Also the wonderfully music of Cara, Oakley's band on Saturday night. Lovely to see Ian Stephenson and family in Bill Sables music session and of course the Ducks!! A big big thankyou to Bridwidder oombanjo Les from Hull & harpmaker but most of all to Sir Roger de Beverley for organising a fantastic FREE festival which exceeded all expectations.

What a good weekend; met more mudcatters, heard some wonderful singing/playing. The tills were jingling merrily, so I think you've made a great number of people very happy, Roger and co. I met and talked to people from the US,Holland,Germany, Kent, Derby, just to name a few places. Don't forget there's a day of music at Cottingham next Saturday (10 to 4pm, followed by a Roy Bailey concert at 8pm),if you're free.

Well, what can I say? Just a huge thankyou to everyone who did so much to make it work. It certainly exceeded all my expectations and I doubt that there is a pint of beer left in Beverley today.

The concert at the Westwood club was great. John Conolly, you all know and love but I think that a lot of people were surprised and delighted to see and hear KwameD and Aiken's Drum - certainly not the last time time that either will play in Beverley (KwameD are booked into the Westwood in September so put that in your diaries).

The Sun Inn for the Doghouse Skiffle Group last night was so full that they had to let one person out so that one could come in. We all left at about half past midnight (there had been a bar extension to midnight)and went singing into the night.

Happy days

I don't think that you can help here but does anyone have any pictures of the ceilidh band? The Council rang me up, they want one to put on display for when the Queen visits Beverley in July!!

Incidentally, I hope that all you Guardian readers noted that I got the festival into their arts listing in the Saturday paper - quite few lines too.

One of the best lines I heard all weekend was from John from Hull. He informed me that he was sending his keyboard back to the shop because it was knackered. When I asked what was wrong with it he answered, " I keep putting words in and they all come out with such bad spelling even I can't understand them when I look at them next morning".

We had a great time both in the Mariners session with Bill and Michael also the 2 sessions we attended in the Tiger. I hope that next year if the pay one takes place that the camping can be free and the spirit of this festival can happen again. Well done everone that worked upto, during & I suspect after the festival to make it the undoubted success that it was.

What a weekend! Thanks to everyone who helped put it together (especially Sir Roger without whom...). And thanks to everyone for coming - it's amazing what people'll do when you tell 'em it's free!

And certainly not least, a real big thanks to Mudcat. A lot of ideas and support came through Mudcat, it got the message through that there was something happening in Beverley this year.

I think that we enjoyed this festival as much as any other we've been to (maybe 'cos we had plenty of money left for drink, and we could commute to a comfy bed!). Maggie and I reckon that Sunday's Iced Gems Session was about the best singing and playing session we've ever been to.

We really enjoyed the festival, though the rumour mill was in full spate. Is it true the "officail" festival organisers phoned the local radio stations to say that rumours of an alternative festival were untrue?

I also heard that some of the landlords were now going to object to BERFFs plans for a full-time worker, as there seemed to be no need if such a successful festival could be organised by volunteers.

The only benefit I can see of the official festival is the smoke free venues - we came out of the Moulder's Arms (our nearest pub) smelling like old ash trays.

Was there something wrong with the sound system at the Westwood? Aiken's Drum seemed to have very raucous sounding instruments and poor vocals.

We quite enjoyed the guided tour on Sunday morning, full marks to the Sun for organising that.

Of course many of the volunteers came forward because this was a "one off" and they wouldn't want to commit to do it every year. Also we pulled in a lot of favours, getting people to run workshops for no fee etc. and we couldn't do that too often. So, although we put this on for next to nothing this time, a repeat would be a bit more expensive (admittedly not hugely expensive if the Licensees footed the artist bill again).

I didn't hear any rumours myself - all I can say is that Chris Wade sent me an email just before the weekend wishing us good luck with it. And we plan to meet up in a few weeks to talk about the future. Perhaps people here would like to propose and comment on possible models for next year and beyond

The walk was hugely successful - about 60 people did it and Steve at the Sun made his money back with interest when most of them came in for a drink.

I think that the sound in the Westwood depended a bit where you were sitting - it didn't sound too bad to me although perhaps John's vocal could have been a little louder.

John Rouse - the 'success' of PVFF depends on how you look at it. It was organised mainly by and for people who like sitting around in pubs (often smoky, I know) singing and playing and drinking. So it was hardly surpising that the landlords thought it was good.

I don't think that there were nearly as many people visting Beverley as for the 'official' festival. We didn't have big names and we didn't have big venues. The campsite population was well down on previous years, despite the fact that camping was free.

(Non-folkie) locals enjoyed the festival, because they got plenty of information (plenty of flyers and posters and free programmes in 20 pubs before the event) and they could go into a wide variety of pubs and get plenty of quality music for free. Not all of these people would want to pay 8 quid for a concert ticket to see people they probably hadn't heard of, even though the music might be better.

As far as I know the sound in the Westwood was organised by the artists themselves using their own gear.

So, in the end, it's what you want from a festival. I certainly enjoyed it because it consisted mainly of things that I like doing, singing and playing and drinking (yes, and smoking) in pubs.

I think that people are only too happy to pass on negative 'news' about the festival. We've promoted the 'official' festival in our programme, and we've received support from Chris Wade thoughout. People were saying similarly untrue things when Chris took over the organisation when the original committee decided to call it a day for very valid reasons.

Thanks very much for your views.

I should say, to emphasise what Les has posted, that we distributed around 800 flyers for the BERFF over this weekend and have encouraged everyone to complete the questionnaires on them to let the official committee know their views.

I think that a lot of people would like to see a continuation of what we achieved over this weekend - whether that is as an official fringe alongside BERFF, absorbed into the main festival or put on at a separate time is open to debate - so let's hear the people's voice on this.

Welcome to Mudcat, rambling rose! Sorry you had to miss so much of the festival, but thanks for the stick of rock!

My own view for continuing PVFF would be to have an additional festival, possibly in September (starting next year) so as not to interfere with the Beverley and East Riding Folk Festival. There's some assumptions that go along with this. We have to be sure that we can get people to volunteer their services - I'll be happy to do the posters and programme again. We also need to be sure that any sponsorship of PVFF would not stop BERFF from going ahead. We obviously need the support of the Local Authorities, and the people of Beverley.

If we combine PVFF and BERFF, we will need additional camping facilities, which would mean another campsite at a local school or sports ground, or an arrangement with the commercial site just outside Beverley. BERFF has always filled the Leisure Centre field with ticket holders.

I just want to say A BIG WELL DONE AND THANK YOU to all who started the ball rolling, to all who jumped on the band wagon and to all who supported the PVFF.

Mary thoroughly enjoyed hosting the bodhràn workshop and got 16 people along to it. Nine of those came to see us at the Beehive and it was packed all night.

It was wonderful to see people coming and going as they supported as many acts as they could during the evening. We saw some friends and made some new ones.

John from Hull, sorry we didn't get to Hodgsons, we got talking to some people in the audience after the gig and ended back at their spot, but I'll catch you at the Tap and Spile. Thanks for your support and tambourin playing.

I don't know about the other bands and artists but if they were as well received as we were by the folkies and non-folkies, they will have had a ball and no mistake.

My involvement was very little this year but if it does go ahead next year you can count on the bodhràn workshop and we'll issue leaflets and info with all our gig lists again. And I'll even help out a bit more, perhaps some admin for you? just give me shout.

This was a very friendly, down to earth festival and it was on my doorstep! THANK YOU AND WELL DONE.

...Thanks for a brilliant, brilliant weekend Roger!
The only drawback is that there were so many things that went on that it'll take me weeks to tell the folk back here in Milton Keynes about it all. And the post-Beverley withdrawal symptoms were so bad that I stayed in the area for a little bit longer and visited the Hessle session (The Hase) last night (Tuesday). Now, I just need to do my washing tomorrow before I set off for the Four Fools Festival in Chorley!

Looking forward to Beverley in 2003 and this years Hull 'Sea Fever' Shanty festival. Planning to try Whitby too in August, now that I've got the hang of travelling northwards!

It was so wonderful to meet and sing/play with Mudcatters such as Bill Sables, Smallpiper, Frank-T, MC Fat, Roger, Willa, John-from-Hull, Brid widder and many more. Simply a fantastic three days.

Hi everyone

Sorry to have been so quiet for the last few days but the work on the wonderful new Tesco development in Beverley managed to damage our phone line on Tuesday and I've been out of touch with world since then.

Thanks to everyone for the responses to PVFF. We hope to have a meeting next week with the licensees and any folkies that care to come along to talk about how it went and where people want to go from here. As I said in an earlier posting we are meeting with Chris Wade in July and I want to get as complete a picture of peoples views as possible before then.

Undoubtedly we tapped into a groundswell of support both locally and more widespread and, if BERFF can build on that, then Beverley should have a mega festival for years to come.I can't see the licensees not wanting to be involved again(I don't think that their accountants would let them pull out)and we have increased the number of potential venues for BERFF to use next year and beyond.

Hi Julie B and John from Hull. Have you tried the Whitby Hiring Fair. This year it is on Sunday 18 at the Football club just on the edge of town. It starts around 12 to 12.30ish and consists of around 12 different acts, each playing for about 15mins. It is free and you don't have to be an agent/folk club or festival organiser/hirer to get in. Someone said to me last year that they have been going to the Whitby fest for years and never miss the hiring fair, they think it's one of the best gigs.

Check it out. We had a ball last year and it gave us an insite into what other acts were doing, their delivery etc, etc. We have our names down to perform there again this year and apart from that it realy is a great afternoons worth of entertainment.

Roger
Please do feel free to quote my comments in the report.

As for MK, one well-attended long-standing session (mainly tunes) is held at The Cannon pub in Newport Pagnell (north MK) every Wed at 8.30pm. The pub is in the centre of NP, on the main street, and the session is currently running in a back room as a private function until a PEL is gained, at which point it'll move back into the bar.
If you're prepared to travel further afield, Bedford folk club meets every Thursday 8.30pm in the Kings Arms in Bedford. Steve Parkes and I would be pleased to give you a lift! Cheers,
Julie
P.S. I too work for the OU! (and so does Steve Parkes).

I received a letter from David dry (Dr) this morning wishing us all his best for being invited to the best festival he has been to in years, He stayed at the Tudor Rose. Where even the landlady made comment on the fact that the fetival, and the people, left the camp site and main venue and came into the town, She felt that it was more a Beverley festival than ever before. I will bring the letter with to our next meet, it is worth publification. Those comments were only one of the issues he thought we had redeemed.

Perhaps all Festival Organisers should realise that, while they are worried about the logistics of getting bums on seats for concerts with artists that they spend larger amounts on each year, the success of the festival stands (or falls) on the singers and musicians who just want to get together with like-minded people and play and sing.
Far too often catering for these people is an afterthought .... festivals like the PPVF show just how important they(we) are.

Everyone is welcome to come and have their say or post comments here or PM me with feedback and suggestions.

I've set up a meeting with Chris Wade of the Beverley and East Riding folk Festival to discuss how PVFF can be built on for next year's festival. It will be on the week of 22nd July but the details are still to be settled. R

Oombanjo has been representing the fringe interests at the FF meetings.

I'd better get in early on this one.Had a meeting last Wed 17?? The agenda was.   Mins of last meeting, Venues (Memorial Hall, back on.catering, (ongoing) fringe There are no changes from last years position though Hannah has not grasped that the Pubs will book their own acts eg Odies. I have spoken to most of the pubs about supporting the programme and although none were against, all would like to know the cost, I have given Hannah a list to visit. Hodgsons have booked the full line up of P.T. H.(can you confirm Ossonflags) The Tiger is back on, and with the Memorial hall being again a venue this should be well patronised.Oddies and the Sun are as usual (check Oddies for a booked act)Nellies will host the old time/Bluegrass from mid day on the Saturday, Anna has made the upstiars room avaliable to the festival "if required" The Start up dance will be again on Thursday at the Memorial Hall .Thats the fringe for now. next on the agenda Stewarding ,more required. Other items were Artists to date, "to many to put down".Education and community programme--Coming of age. Jenny may come in on this one??? and Funding. I will put in more as I am made aware.
