Subject: RA QUIZ From: greg stephens Date: 20 Jun 02 - 09:22 AM Have made this a lot easier than my previous RBQuiz, not because of anything personal about the target audience (who should b up and doing now), but because I had complaints the last one was too hard. This should be done in a couple of hours I would guess. Post answers, with an explanation of the musical allusion (which won't all be folk). 1: George Alley was very fond of his, knock off 110 and you'll get somewhere else (with a bell ringing?). 2: Tune, spoon and moon and female company (en route to 3). 3: Took a lot of pride in cumulus aeronauticus. 4: Bearded Charlton Heston saw it but never made it, but then he didn't start from here. 5: "Take my hand" Tom might have sung to his slidy un-saved partner, who came from where? 6: Meet Santa Anna round here. 7: nice place to spend some time, even if she was two(three?)timing me. 8: Stan and Astrid got cut dead here. 9: Bound for Q10 round -------. 10: Bound for ------- round Q9 11: Madam Gashay ran a rest home for girls with jaundice here. 12: Car for hire, but you'll have to pay some brass. 13: Ultimate destination of 4. 14: Animal, vegetable and mineral: very desirable mineral, very friendly animals, very pretty vegetable coiffeur. 15: River came noisily down a Spanish sounding valley, then met the saline ebb and flow, but where exactly? 16: Large area of molluscs here. 17: Inuit leather vessels penetrate. 18: James Gordon got a bit chilly hereabouts. 19: One Monday morning we set sail, no great matter where to. 20: Brave ship's boss knocking back the biscuity liqueur here. 21: Nice to ask this one again. GOOD LUCK! PRIZES!! (a few line breaks added by a Joeclone) |
Subject: RE: RA QUIZ From: greg stephens Date: 20 Jun 02 - 09:30 AM Sorry, I've just learnt how to do linebreaks, but I havent learnt how to remember to do linebreaks. |
Subject: RE: RA QUIZ From: wysiwyg Date: 20 Jun 02 - 09:35 AM 11. Isn't that Gashee? ~S~ |
Subject: RE: RA QUIZ From: greg stephens Date: 20 Jun 02 - 10:04 AM This is folk music, Susan. You sing Gashee, I sing Gashay. You probably sing tomaytoes too, and I sing tomahtoes. |
Subject: RE: RA QUIZ From: The Walrus at work Date: 20 Jun 02 - 01:05 PM At a guess, 9 & 10 Are "Bound for Valpariso 'round Cape Horn" ? Walrus |
Subject: RE: RA QUIZ From: The Walrus at work Date: 20 Jun 02 - 01:09 PM A second look:
Could 3 be Baltimore? Walrus |
Subject: RE: RA QUIZ From: GUEST,greg stephens Date: 20 Jun 02 - 01:29 PM Correctomundo, Walrus. So far: 3 Baltimore 9 Cape Horn 10 Valparaiso |
Subject: RE: RA QUIZ From: Wolfgang Date: 20 Jun 02 - 01:37 PM 17: "only the eskimo in his skin canoe..." (Lord/Lady Franklin). If it has to be a location, mentioned in the song is "Baffin's Bay". Wolfgang
|
Subject: RE: RA QUIZ From: GUEST,greg stephens Date: 20 Jun 02 - 01:43 PM Wolfgang, I will accept that happily, it is mentioned in the song, but what I really want is "what could the Eskimos get through that Franklin couldnt" |
Subject: RE: RA QUIZ From: Les from Hull Date: 20 Jun 02 - 01:45 PM 6 Gulf of Mexico? 11 Callao? |
Subject: RE: RA QUIZ From: GUEST,greg stephens Date: 20 Jun 02 - 01:53 PM Callao right for 11. Think I'll be picky and not accept Gulf of Mexico, unles you can quote a song to back it up. You're very very close though. |
Subject: RE: RA QUIZ From: Wolfgang Date: 20 Jun 02 - 01:56 PM 6 Round the Bay of Mexico 19 'Brave Wolfe' (Watersons) start with that line and he is off 'to fight the French'. Was it in Quebec? Wolfgang |
Subject: RE: RA QUIZ From: GUEST,greg stephens Date: 20 Jun 02 - 02:02 PM Correct on both, wolfgang. For the bonus points though, I'd still like to know what Franklin was trying to penetrate, and what was the "no great matter" in the Quebec question. |
Subject: RE: RA QUIZ From: Wolfgang Date: 20 Jun 02 - 02:12 PM No idea for 19, 'mountains of ice' for 17. Please explain Les' solution to 11 for me. Wolfgang |
Subject: RE: RA QUIZ From: greg stephens Date: 20 Jun 02 - 02:20 PM The songs are no help on those extra bits, I'm afraid Wolfgang. You have to know what Franklin was trying to get through, and who said "no great matter" about what in relation to the Quebec trip. No11: relevant lines from "Doodle let me go" I wish I was back in Madam Gashay's Down in Callao Hoorah me yellow gals Doodle let me go. (it probably wasnt actually a rest home for girls with jaundice!!) |
Subject: RE: RA QUIZ From: Wolfgang Date: 20 Jun 02 - 02:24 PM if it doesn't have to be mentioned in the song, it has to be the North-West passage ('passage round the pole' in the song). Thanks for 11 (I didn't have the song association) Wolfgang |
Subject: RE: RA QUIZ From: Keith A of Hertford Date: 20 Jun 02 - 02:43 PM Monterey for 4 as in shanty Santa Anna? |
Subject: RE: RA QUIZ From: Keith A of Hertford Date: 20 Jun 02 - 02:45 PM oops..... 6 not 4 |
Subject: RE: RA QUIZ From: SharonA Date: 20 Jun 02 - 02:48 PM Hold on thar, Greg and Wolfgang! According to this thread – /thread.cfm?threadid=46588 – the answer to #6 is "all on the plains of Mexico". |
Subject: RE: RA QUIZ From: SharonA Date: 20 Jun 02 - 02:52 PM (Although "bay of Mexico" is one of several variations, I believe "plains of Mexico" is far more commonly used.) |
Subject: RE: RA QUIZ From: GUEST Date: 20 Jun 02 - 03:01 PM SharonA: I'm sorry, but folksongs do have variations: it's the nature of the beast. I did this quiz out of my head, with versions of songs that I know..and seasongs especially vary enormously from singer to singer. And in any case"Plains of Mexico" wont fit the theme of the quiz! The song I was going for was "The Bay of Mexico" Around the bay of Mexico Way hay Santa Anna Mexico is the place that I belong in Round the bay of Mexico. etc etc Answer another one! |
Subject: RE: RA QUIZ From: GUEST,greg stephens Date: 20 Jun 02 - 03:05 PM That was me, cant get my cookie to stay set today. |
Subject: RE: RA QUIZ From: annamill Date: 20 Jun 02 - 03:21 PM I thought I did this. 4) Promised Land? L.A. |
Subject: RE: RA QUIZ From: GUEST,greg stephens Date: 20 Jun 02 - 03:42 PM Promised Land will take you to the answer of Q4,but it's not L.A. |

Subject: RE: RA QUIZ From: Snuffy Date: 20 Jun 02 - 07:11 PM 7 Venezuela 8. Ipanema 12. Tijuana Taxi 16. Acres of clams - where? WassaiL! V |
Subject: RE: RA QUIZ From: Noreen Date: 20 Jun 02 - 07:27 PM 16. Acres of clams in Puget Sound, Snuffy, and if you're VERY good I'll find you a picture of one of them... |
Subject: RE: RA QUIZ From: Snuffy Date: 20 Jun 02 - 07:36 PM I've already seen the geoduck one, Noreen. |
Subject: RE: RA QUIZ From: Noreen Date: 20 Jun 02 - 07:55 PM Thought you would have, Snuffy. 18:It takes teamwork to farm in North Ontario by James Gordon? |
Subject: RE: RA QUIZ From: GUEST,greg stephens Date: 20 Jun 02 - 07:58 PM Nice burst, Snuffy and good cooperation from Noreen(you never claimed your prize offered at the end of RB Quiz...PM me). Recap: answered so far. 3 Baltimore (Flying Cloud) 6 (Round the) Bay of Mexico 7 (To pass away the time in) Venezuela 8 (Girl from) Ipanema 9 Cape Horn (Paddy lay back) 10 Valparaiso (Paddy lay back) 11 Callao (Doodle let me go) 12 Tijuana (Taxi) 16 Puget Sound (Acres of Clams) 17 North West Passage (Lord Franklin) 19 Quebec (General Wolfe) That's everything right so far...we've got as far as Promised Land for 4 but that's not far enough. |
Subject: RE: RA QUIZ From: GUEST,greg stephens Date: 20 Jun 02 - 08:01 PM Noreen, not north ontario. Needs to be colder than that ( it was discussed in Mudcat a month ago,but I dont think they have recent stuff indexed, so you cant use the search!!) |
Subject: RE: RA QUIZ From: Hrothgar Date: 21 Jun 02 - 03:04 AM Canaan's Land for 4? River Jordan for 13? 1 is something to do with Engine 143, and the place name I have is Sooville, but I don't get the "minus 110" bit. |
Subject: RE: RA QUIZ From: greg stephens Date: 21 Jun 02 - 03:28 AM hrothgar, youre getting there, but slowly. What do you get if you take 110 away from Engine 143?Ring any bells?!!! (think prolific Mudcat poster and songwriter). And the answer is a place. As regards Canaans Land etc....we've already got to Promised Land. And remember its a music quiz, not a bible quiz. And if you'ld donethe RB Quiz, you'ld remember that stood for Round Britain Quiz. |
Subject: RE: RA QUIZ From: Wolfgang Date: 21 Jun 02 - 07:08 AM for 1: the only association I have is to 'Bus 33' who takes people to Glasgow sales, but why the bell? Wolfgang |
Subject: RE: RA QUIZ From: Wolfgang Date: 21 Jun 02 - 07:38 AM Now is the first time I think about what 'RA' means. So I withdraw "Bus 33" and replace it by "Engine 33" which comes from New York if that is specific enough. The bell also gets a better emaning this way. Wolfgang |
Subject: RE: RA QUIZ From: Noreen Date: 21 Jun 02 - 09:17 AM 2 makes me think of On Moonlight Bay with Doris Day (Bill's sister?) but is it a real place? There is a Moonlight Bay on the coast of Maryland... |
Subject: RE: RA QUIZ From: wysiwyg Date: 21 Jun 02 - 11:09 AM Not pickin' on you Greg-- I recall reading it as Gashee, never thought about how to pronounce, certainly agree pronouncing it Gashay would make sense, just wanted to clarify if we were talking about the same dame regardless of dame. ~S~ |
Subject: RE: RA QUIZ From: SharonA Date: 21 Jun 02 - 11:22 AM 2. By the Light of the Silvery Moon? 4. Been To Canaan (by Carole King)? Maybe I'm missing "the theme of the quiz", but I don't see the theme explained anywhere. Please clarify!! |
Subject: RE: RA QUIZ From: Noreen Date: 21 Jun 02 - 12:10 PM Sharon, you have to work it out for yourself! (Look at the other answers). |
Subject: RE: RA QUIZ From: GUEST,greg stephens Date: 21 Jun 02 - 05:35 PM PLEASE POST TO RA QUIZ PARTII NOW cant read long threads |
