Subject: About the chat room. From: Frank in the swamps. Date: 03 May 98 - 05:36 AM Say Max, I know that the old chat room didn't get a lot of use, but it seems to me that the forum has been growing by leaps and bounds lately. What's the status on Mudcat chat? I never got to try the old one because I'm usually on line about 4:00 or 5:00 am eastern seaboard time (U.S.) but now even a troglodyte like me can hope to find a friend to talk to. Frank i.t.s. |
Subject: RE: About the chat room. From: rosebrook Date: 03 May 98 - 02:00 PM Frank i.t.s, At 7 a.m. western time (my usual check in time), I would be just in time to be your friend!! |
Subject: RE: About the chat room. From: Humdinger Folksinger Date: 03 May 98 - 04:47 PM I'm an insomniac and frequently lament, to myself, that I wish I had someone, with whom I could chat, in the wee hours of the am EST. |
Subject: RE: About the chat room. From: Helen Date: 03 May 98 - 06:54 PM I don't know exactly how your am EST translates into Oz time but I'm willing to bet that there would be a good overlap for a few chats from us over here/downunder too. helen |
Subject: RE: About the chat room. From: Barry Finn Date: 03 May 98 - 08:37 PM EST works great if you're a night owl (EST), Oz put you somewhere close to a 12 hr difference I think, I've had a few nice midnight chats with some noontime Aussies, sure would like to see it back, I did have nice 5 way conversions, improved my keyboard skills although not my spelling. Subject: RE: About the chat room. From: Bob Bolton Date: 03 May 98 - 09:24 PM G'day in the U.S. of A., The East Coast of Oz (not currently on daylight saving) is 18 hours ahead (or 6 hours behind and a day ahead) of the West Coast and 15 hours ahead (or 9 hours behind and a day ahead) of US EST. This would make 7 am Western Time, Monday equal 1 am Tuesday for an Aussie in Melbourne/Sydney/Brisbane. I guess that makes 7 am Western Time, Saturday a good time for an Aussie muso staggering in from a Saturday night gig (1 am Sunday) and still possessing enough energy to chat! 7 am EST would be 10 pm in Oz's east, so a night owl on the Aussie East Coast might fit in with an early riser on the Eastern Seaboard. Regards, Bob Bolton |
Subject: RE: About the chat room. From: Barry Finn Date: 03 May 98 - 10:21 PM Thanks Bob, with some of the hrs I used to keep, I could swear someone was putting their child down for a noontime nap, it must've been way later than I thought or remember. Barry |
Subject: RE: About the chat room. From: Bob Bolton Date: 03 May 98 - 11:51 PM G'day Barry, It could be different habits in different climates. The odds of getting a baby to sleep at midday, in summer, in an un-airconditioned house are slim! Regards, Bob Bolton |
Subject: RE: About the chat room. From: Max Date: 04 May 98 - 12:43 AM The chat was not being used very much and was causing problems on some machines including our servers. We are planning a new one, but it is an investment on my part, that simly is driven by interest. I'll talk to my programmers and see if I get a volunteer. |

Subject: RE: About the chat room. From: steve t Date: 04 May 98 - 07:55 AM I'm not too familiar with IRC. Would it be possible to simply list a suggested place and password on the already established chat servers for mudcateers to go? Chat fans could split screen, keeping their browser AND their chat windows open. While browsing through the discussion forum, they would then SEE when someone joined in the chat room and could begin to gab. This approach would have the advantage of allowing people to search threads easily without invoking two copies of their memory gobbling web browser. An alternate version is to simply post to a thread called "current chat", simple notes like: hi, it's 8:00 AM and I'll be monitoring IRC channel so and so for a half hour or so. - Fingers, the touch-typist extrodinaire

Subject: RE: About the chat room. From: Bill D Date: 04 May 98 - 10:34 AM I have used IRC extensively, and think it would be a fine idea...but it DOES require an extra piece of software and a bit of a learning curve....but there is NO reason to prevent those who wish from setting an IRC site anyway..it could be used no matter what Max eventually comes up with...(there are 2 or 3 other ways to do live chat, too...AOL instant messanger--meeting on some 'established' web chat, ICQ, etc...) |
Subject: RE: About the chat room. From: Alice Date: 04 May 98 - 05:07 PM I have a chat room on my website (hosted free by someone else) and I have only used it once, when I emailed to a friend to meet me there. I could never get the Mudcat one to work with my Mac system. I would enter, but I couldn't get anything to type.. it would just freeze. I was always concerned that people thought I was lurking, then splitting without saying anything (how rude) when actually, I would be desperately trying to get my message to type in. The one at my webpage works fine, but I just haven't developed traffic enough to check into it very often. If anyone wants to meet me there, you would have to email a time to meet to get my attention! http://www.mcn.net/~acflynn/chat.html I usually tend to send email back and forth to some people, just as if it is a chat room. Subject: RE: About the chat room. From: Dan Mulligan Date: 05 May 98 - 12:11 AM The best chat application has got to be "Powwow". It would work great for Mudcateers because you can upload files to each other while you chat (like MIDI files or lyrics.) You can set up a Mudcat Conference room as a meeting place and individual conversations can split off from there.Powwow is available at www.tribal.com Dan

Subject: RE: About the chat room. From: Pete M Date: 05 May 98 - 08:27 PM Pardon my ignorance, but what advantages does a "chat room" what ever that is, have over this forum? I gather from some of the above comments that it is essentially ephemeral whereas one of the great treats of this site is teh ability to trace both threads and common themes across threads?? Pete M |
Subject: RE: About the chat room. From: Gene E Date: 07 May 98 - 10:44 AM I like the forum threads better than chat. Gene E |
Subject: RE: About the chat room. From: H.Dulcimer Date: 07 May 98 - 11:48 AM The nice thing about the forum is that shatever time of day you enter................the messages are there. With a chat room, maybe someone will be there. In the case of the old Mudcat chat room, it seemed that whenever I arrived, it would be empty. Now a designated room in some of the other chat sitex, for mudcatters, That isn't a bad idea. someone open a new room, inform us. and we will meet you there. |
