I took jake out to hunt raccoon , he headed straight for the town saloon
The sherif sat there in trembling fear while he chewed his badge & drank his beer
chorus
under the window where ma’s pies sat he spotted the tracks of a mountain cat
all those guys come out from town to hear that cat & that crazy hound
way up high in the tree it sat, my momma’s calico cat.

Had an old dog and his name was Jake
found him down by the old cane break
figured he'd make a pretty good hound
'soon ss he learned his way around
I don't know but I been told
a good dog's worth his weight in gold
come on down for about a week
commin' on down to cripple creek
goin' to cripple creek
goin' on the run
goin' to cripple creek
and have a little fun (2x)

As Pogo is alleged to have said:

How much ground round
Could a hound-dog hog
If a groundhog was ground round?

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

It was also recorded under the title Hound Dog by Jackie Washington (the Cambridge/Boston one, not the Canadian one)back in the mid 1960s.

"the New Lost City Ramblers" is also where I learned it. Haven't sung it for years but it would make a nice intro to "Dead Dog Cider."

I don't hear a melody connection with "Maria's Wedding."
Cheerily,
Charley Noble

There's a version - or variation - sung by Buffy Saint Marie on her "I Want To Be A Country Girl Again" album. Just her and her mouth bow.

I remember this song from the New Christy Minstrels "Cowboys and Indians" recording from way back. Here is what I remember of it, my cassette tapes have all worn out I have played them so often.

Had an old dog, and his name was Jake,
I found him out in the old cane break.
figured he make a real good hound
as soon as he learned his way around.

refrain...Every time I go to town
the boys keep kickin my dog around
makes no difference if he is hound
ya gotta quit kickin my dog around

I am going to do some more research and see if I can get these tapes to play - one more time. Hope this helps yall.

The only new thing that I can add here is the way I learned was with a yodel at the end.

I know a slightly different version than the one in the data-base or the ones in the previous thread.

Everytime I go to town, the boys all kick my dog around
I don't care if he's a hound, ought not to kick my dog around
Hound, hound, round, round, don't ya be kickin' my dog around (2x)

Mollie, Mollie, Mollie, put that knife away
If you cut my head off, I'm leavin' you today

(cho)

Mollie, Mollie, Mollie, put that knife in the drawer
If you cut my heart out I won't love you anymore

Many years ago, a couple of Irish folkies who bunked at our house told me that the tune to The Hound Dog Song was the same as the traditional "Mari's Wedding*. My grandfather claimed to have known the protagonists in this occasional piece; but, like most of the old-timers where I grew up, he generally avoided telling the absolute truth. He loved a "stretcher."

It's in the DT as the Hound Dog Song, there was also a thread on it awhile ago, check the forum search for more background on it. Barry
