Subject: LYR REQ: spirtuals From: chet w. Date: 05 May 98 - 03:56 PM Looking for words to two spirituals that the Red Clay Ramblers used to do: Ezekial in the Valley of the Dry Bones - and - I'll be Ready When the Great Day Comes. Also would love to find a source for spirituals in general. Thanks, Chet W. |
Subject: RE: LYR REQ: spirtuals From: rich r Date: 05 May 98 - 11:09 PM Chet, Somewhere in my collection I have a tape with several songs done by the Gospel Jubilators at the Durhan NC Folk festival in 1977. I don't know until I find it if it is the one you are looking for. A group with a recent CD of that style of music is the Fairfield Four. I heard them live at the park last summer and also several years ago at a Garrison Keillor show. For spirituals, the infamous Rise Up Singing (Sinout! publication) has 35-40 in a separate section plus a few others sprinkled around in other headings. I will assume that you have searched the DT. rich r |
Subject: RE: LYR REQ: spirtuals From: Ireland O'Reilly Date: 06 May 98 - 09:18 AM There is a great collection of "white spirituals" from Majesty Music in Greenville, South Carolina. It's called "On My Journey Home". I've got the address...somewhere. Majesty music will send flyers with titles and prices of their stuff, if you request it. they have all manner of music there... sheet music as well as CD's & tapes. |
Subject: RE: LYR REQ: spirtuals From: chet w Date: 06 May 98 - 12:26 PM Thanks, Rich and Ireland. I am very interested in your sources. I actually saw the Gospel Jubilators myself at the Eno River Festival in Durham in about 1984 or 85. It was one of the greatest music listening experiences of my life. I bought two 7-inch vinyl records that they had to sell, each with four songs (one of them was "Noah had a Hammer"). Do they have any other recordings available? I would also appreciate very much the address of Majesty Music. Thanks again, Chet W. |

Subject: RE: LYR REQ: spirtuals From: Nora Date: 08 May 98 - 01:16 AM On the (I think) out of print LP by Jean Redpath and Lisa Neustadt called "Angel Band" there is a tune called 'Dry Bones.' I think I have a tape of it in my car; I can't seem to find it anywhere, and my ex has the turntable. It might or might not mention Ezekiel, but there is a line 'Dry bones in the valley/ got up and took a little walk' Is this the song you're looking for? Nora |
Subject: RE: LYR REQ: spirtuals From: Joe Offer Date: 08 May 98 - 01:58 AM Nora, that Redpath/Neustadt album is called "Angels Hovering Round," and it's available on cassette only from Rounder. I sure wish they'd reissue it on CD. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: LYR REQ: spirtuals From: Nora Date: 08 May 98 - 01:59 PM Joe Offer- Thanks. You're right, I misremembered the title. They released another called Anywhere is Home. Both are excellent. I will order the cassette from Rounder. I have nearly worn out the copies I made. I didn't know either were available on tape. I haven't been able to find them. The LPs were released on Fretless Records. They ought to reissue it on CD. Whenever I have played a cut from either LP on the radio I get a ton of phone calls. (Well, more than one, anyway) Nora |
Subject: RE: LYR REQ: spirtuals From: Nora Date: 08 May 98 - 02:53 PM Also: There's a version of Ezekiel Saw the Wheel on a record by Sally Rogers and Claudia Schmidt called 'Closing the Distance' (1987 Flying Fish Records). Lyrics are as above, verses in slightly different order. Vocals by Claudia, Sally and Howie Bursen. Nora |
Subject: RE: LYR REQ: spirtuals From: Joe Offer Date: 08 May 98 - 03:42 PM Hi, Nora - Here's the word from Rounder about "Angels Hovering 'Round": Unlike Smithsonian Folkways we do not have a CD burner in order to make you a custom CD. It is a good idea, however. I will pass it along to the appropriate people here.Guess you'd better hurry, Nora. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: LYR REQ: spirtuals From: Nora Date: 08 May 98 - 05:33 PM Joe Offer Thanks for checking on that. Rounder's last remaining copy is on its way to North Carolina now. They didn't have any more of the 'Anywhere is Home' cassette, unfortunately, but I'll be happy to have a clean copy of 'Angels Hovering Round.' Nora

Subject: Lyr Add: VALLEY OF THE DRY BONES From: GUEST,alice_gj@yahoo.com Date: 05 Jul 02 - 10:40 AM I'm doing this from memory and i haven't listened to the Ramblers' CD in years, but this is pretty close. I was looking for the exact lyrics myself to sing the song at camp. Here's the best I can do from memory. VALLEY OF THE DRY BONES
Ezekiel was in the valley all the Lord's days,
He told Ezekiel as the son of man to preach the Gospel to the sinful man.
The head bone's connected to the neck bone,
The backbone's connected to the.... |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: spirtuals From: GUEST,alice07@dartmouth.edu Date: 14 Mar 05 - 06:11 PM It's Alice, back again 3 years later with the lyrics to the whole song. VALLEY OF THE DRY BONES Ezekiel was in the valley all the Lord's days, God told Ezekiel to prophesize now "Hear ye the word of the Lord." He told Ezekiel as the son of man to preach the Gospel to the sinful man. The people of Israel, they got so wicked my God stops I'll call Ezekiel, Said "Hey Ezekiel come prophesize. The wicked man was born to die." ezekiel went down into israel land to prech the gospel to the sinful man. people of isreal they would not hear, so my god said, "the time is near" I gonna make me a city in my own way for a nation of people that will obey. So God he came in the middle of the night Destroyed that city with all his might He put Ezekiel in the valley prophesize, said "Hear ye the word of the Lord." Now the toe and the foot bone, join together The foot and the ankle bone join together ankle and leg join together leg and knee join together knee and thigh join together thigh and hip . . . Ezekiel in the valley of the dry bones repeat Now ezekiel he raised up his head found that he was lyin' amoung the dead Well God said Ezekiel, can these bones live? Ezekiel said God if it is I will Well Ezekiel he began to prophesize and them dry bones began to rise He prophesized high up to the wind put breath in the bones that they might live Then them bones began to walk They stood on the ground, began to tal Ezekiel said to these dry bones, "won't you hear ye the word of the Lord!" Ezekiel in the valley of the dry bones repeat repeat Hear the word of the Lord. |
