Subject: B-b-b-b-barbecue From: GUEST,CBJames Date: 04 Jul 02 - 12:38 AM This no doubt a test - to see how many true Cape Bretoners out there in the mudcat vacuum. Nevertheless the request is real. Mid 1980s Cape Breton Summertime Review sang what I think was called the "Barbecue Song" with the chorus ending "Walt will show you how to B-b-b-b-b-b-barbecue" I don't suppose it's too much of a stretch to think somebody might remember it and actually have it wriiten down? cbj |
Subject: RE: LYR REQ: B-b-b-b-barbecue From: Joe Offer Date: 04 Jul 02 - 03:24 AM Hi, cbj - any chance you can recall any more of the song. Is it about an event, where people gather to cook stuff - or is it about the meat that people in the Southern U.S. call "barbecue" - roast beef or pork in BBQ sauce?? I've heard a song about the food, which is considered to be almost as sacred as sweet corn in some places. -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: LYR REQ: B-b-b-b-barbecue From: GUEST,CBJames Date: 06 Jul 02 - 12:13 AM Thanks Folks, Sounds like there are a few BBQ songs out there - but the one I am looking for is relatively local. I did indicate this might be a test. How many Cape Bretoners can you grill - if they don't turn up? I can make a deal. I can even remember and honour a deal. Sounds like Joe has a good song tucked away there in his grey cells & Hrothgar's offer of an Eric Bogle song entices too. Must admit though, in both cases - unless the the song's hilarious across cultures it could fall flat - and then why would I want to learn it except as a mudeum piece. {Aside here - Discovering not only my children, but my employees belong to different generation musically. A Woman approaching thirty who works for me is taking up guitar and wants to learn chords. I throw out suggestions of popular Canadian woman songwriterswhose songs I know how to play and can easily scribble down chords. McGarrigle Sisters? - This drew a blank stare. "you must know "Heart Like a Wheel" Lynda Ronstad covered that." - another blank stare. Suddenly realized that when these songs impressed me they may or may not have been available to or have impressed her parents who were probably too busy conceiving her at the time. Oh Lord, it's becoming far too easy to be humble"} So the deal is this. Joe - if you can find your BBQ song @ post a tune for it as well I will be able to learn it. Hrothgar- if you can do the same with the Bogle song, I will be happy to learn that one too. {Always 'appy to learn Aussie tunes since m' repertoire's limited to "Down by Blondike's Pier"} When I find it I'll let you know and I'll put a tune to it. It is a lovely song. cheers jb |
Subject: RE: LYR REQ: B-b-b-b-barbecue From: Jim Dixon Date: 09 Jul 02 - 02:30 AM There are indeed some intriguing song titles that feature the word "barbecue." I found these by using CDNOW's search feature. And this isn't even counting the ones that use the alternative spellings "barbeque" or "bar-b-q" (which I consider substandard).
"Alabama Barbecue," performed by the Ink Spots. |

Although I do like the idea of a Frank Zappa barbecue song - I might investigate that one. (Actually the pedigree of most of 'em intrigues) Thanks for the Offer (apologies to Joe). Did you say? Were you north or south of Mason? I am going to beg out of this thread right now. Goodbye - but Thanks anyway. cbj |
