Did anyone else see this on ABC, tonight:
American Melodies
Wednesday, July 3
We'll take a musical journey through the back roads of America, following Nick Spitzer, the host of the NPR music program "American Routes" through bluegrass, down through zydeco, and ending up with Ray Charles.

We just caught the last half, but it was great! They went to visit Wayne Hendersen and when they asked him how do you go about making a guitar, he listed all of the kinds of woods you need to gather, along with a sharp carving knife, then he said "you carve away everything that doesn't look like a guitar!" They made a few phone calls and pretty soon they had a great session going with none other than his neighbour, Doc Watson. THEN, they went to Wayne's fav. jam session...it was really wonderful to see and hear.

The rest of what we saw was equally as good, esp. Ray Charles doing hands-on teaching to L.A. students in a blues lab at a school bearing his name.

If you check at abc.com, do a search for "nightline" the blurb comes up about the program. At the bottom of that page, they have some highlights of shows past, so maybe they will archive some of this one. It was really well done.

Thanks,

kat

Kat, Is it "American Routes" or "American Roots?" (I always thought it was the latter, but I've never seen it written.)

Must be "routes" as that is a copy and paste from abc's site, Sonja. I've always thought it was a rather neat play, either way.:-)

Kat, It (the general store) jam was a gem! Wish I'd taped it.

Yeah, Mickey, I wish I had taped and also seen the earlier bits, too!

Yeah, I caught part of it, including the "general store" jam. Thanks for telling us about it, Kat!

Kat, it definitely is American Routes. Their website may give info on how to get a tape of the program or whether it will be repeated.

ABC does run SOME Nightline reruns, I think.
