While many of us are reminiscing about the Holy Modal Rounders, I wonder if anyone else is a fan of Timbuk 3? They have a lot in common with the Rounders, although they aren't as Psychedelic. Or quite as crazy. Timbuk 3 started out as a husband wife group on the folk circuit (or so I'm told.) I think they're from Wisconsin, originally. They had one big hit: My Future's So Bright, I gotta Wear Shades, but they produced a lot of great stuff. When they had their hit though, they expanded into a full band and to my taste, lost the immediacy of their earlier stuff. I was just listening to a CD I put together of some of my favorite stuff of theirs, and the BoDeans, another Wisconsin group who I like who have vestiges of folk in them.

Anyone else like Timbuk 3?

Jerry

Hi Jerry,

I have been a great fan of the Rounders through all of their incarnations, but I must say that Timbuk3 do very little for me at all. As a result of your thread, I just listened again to the only album I have of theirs - 'Greetings From' - to see if perhaps I had missed something. Fine musos, clever word play and some nice harmonies, but I can't really connect with them. Now, the early BoDeans stuff is another kettle of fish. I loved their first couple of albums, but lost interest after that. While typing this, I am listening to 'Love & Hope & Sex & Dreams'. What a gem of an album, with lovely songs like 'Runaway', 'Still the Night', 'Rickshaw Riding' etc. The bloke with the slightly weird voice is immensely appealing. Thanks for reminding me of them - I haven't played this CD for years. Sorry I can't share your enthusiasm for Timbuck3. De gustibus ...

--Stewie.

Stewie: One out of two ain't bad. Funny thing is, I put together a CD of some of my favorite Timbuk 3 stuff, followed by several cuts from the first two BoDeans albums(which are the only two I really liked, too.) I thought that the music flowed fairly smoothly from one group to the other... not what I would have expected. I put the CD together for someone who outbid me on a CD of the First Insect Trust album (which I have on record.) I sent an e-mail to the guy, and he said that he was interested in hearing some more off-beat stuff, so I made the CD for him. Now, I could have sent him my favorite Bonzo Dog Doo Band cuts, but the kid has a rock band and I don't know if he'd appreciate them.

Ya never know.

As often happens, it seems like many bands peak at the beggining, and then lose sight of where they're going as soon as they get a little popularity.

Jerry

I reckon you are right about some bands peaking early. The Jayhawks are a case in point for me - their backing of Joe Henry's great 'Short Man's Room' album and most of their own 'Hollywood Town Hall' album were excellent. They lost me after that, or probably went somewhere I didn't wish to follow - as, unfortunately, did Joe Henry.

Guess our tastes are similar, Stewie. I also liked Wilco when it started out. Guess we're the only ones...:-)

The Future's So Bright I Gotta Wear Shades

Timbuk 3

from the album Greetings From Timbuk 3 © 1988

Lyrics by Pat MacDonald.

I study nuclear science
I love my classes
I got a crazy teacher, he wears dark glasses
Things are going great, and they're only getting better
I'm doing all right, getting good grades
The future's so bright, I gotta wear shades

I've got a job waiting for my graduation
Fifty thou a year -- buys a lot of beer
Things are going great, and they're only getting better
I'm doing all right, getting good grades
The future's so bright, I gotta wear shades

Well I'm heavenly blessed and worldly wise
I'm a peeping-tom techie with x-ray eyes
Things are going great, and they're only getting better
I'm doing all right, getting good grades
The future's so bright, I gotta wear shades

I study nuclear science
I love my classes
I got a crazy teacher, he wears dark glasses
Things are going great, and they're only getting better
I'm doing all right, getting good grades
The future's so bright, I gotta wear shades
I gotta wear shades, I gotta wear shades

Pat and Barbara split up a few years ago and both have solo records out. My guess is they're both worthwhile.

Timbuck 3 was from Madison but moved to Austin Texas so we considered them locals here in Ft Worth. I was lucky enough to see them dozens of times in my local pub. If you didn't know them they had prerecorded bass and drum tracks on a boom box that they started using on the street for busking. They later started playing clubs and would plug it into the PA system. Jerry - I never saw them as a "band". Only as a duo with a boom box.

I can think of at least three CD's they put out as Timbuck 3. I have an LP and an EP put out by Pat McDonalds earlier group. It includes their song "Assholes On Parade" which manages to make fun of just about any large group that you can think of.

They had a wonderful sound, great lyrics, great performers and were two of the nicest people I've met. It's a shame that the only song people associate with them is "My Futures So Bright..". There was a lot more to this band. I'll miss them. I was a big fan.

One of their songs immediately struck me first time I heard it on the radio, and it still thrills me, each time I play it: Standard White Jesus
One of my all-time favourites of pop-rock-folk music. I listened some more Timbuk 3, nice music, but no other song came close to 'Jesus'.

Wesley: I bought their first album as a full-fledged band and didn't enjoy it as much as their first three albums. I suppose my favorite songs are Haircuts and Attitudes and Sample The Dog. Reverend Jack and His Roamin' Cadillac Church and Eden Alley are great, gritty tunes, too, as is Sinful Life.

If anyone wants to find out what's avialble, just type in Timbuk 3 in the little Search The Web box and you'll see the list.

Jerry
