Can anyone help me locate the lyrics to an old (Ithink) English song called "Diver Boy" or "Diver Beau". It may even be called "The Low-li-low".

Verse one: Young Emily was a fair lady bride. She loved her diver beau; Who sailed the ocean over to gather up some gold. Many long years returning his money for to show That he'd been sailing o'er the main and diving in the low-li-low.

Thanks Tom

It's a version of "Edwin (Edmund, Edward) in the Lowlands Low" [Laws M34] (Click here for The Traditional Ballad Index). EDWARD IN THE LOWLANDS (Appalachian version collected by Sharp) is in the DT. The Penguin version and valuable info (with many links) are at this thread: Penguin: Young Edwin In The Lowlands Low. Another version by Martin Carthy is posted HERE (Lyr Add: Young Emma). "The Diver Boy" (sound clip) sung by Ollie Gilbert can be heard HERE (Various Artists, Southern Journey V. 1: Voices from the American South -- Blues, Ballads, Hymns, Reels, Shouts, Chanteys and Work Songs, Rounder CD 1701).

"The Diver Boy", as sung by Ollie Gilbert, Mountain View, Arkansas on May 26, 1969, is similar (at least textually) to the version given. For full lyrics and recording, click here (The Max Hunter Collection).

VERSE 1
Young Emily was a fair lady bright
She loved her diver boy
Who sailed the ocean over
To gather up some gold
Seven long years returning
His money for to show
That he'd been traveling o'er the main
Down in the lowland, low

Young Emily (sung by Doug Wallin, Sodom, Madison County, N.C.) starts like this (CD is THIS):

Young Emily was a pretty fair miss,
She loved the driver boy,
Who drove the stage some gold to get,
Down in the lowlands low.

Hi Louise
I don't know where you'd find the written music but I'm listening to a CD "Rain & Snow" by Elizabeth LaPrelle recorded on 'Old 97 Wrecords. She has this song as Young Emily from Sheila Kay Adams & she does an amazing job on this mountain version of 'Driver Boy'
