Subject: I'm riding on the orphan train From: GUEST,kwiedel@aol.com Date: 14 Jul 02 - 11:02 PM I heard this song performed at the Common Ground folk festival this weekend. A ballad about the orphan trains that traveled the midwest. Some of the lyrics were, "Won't uou please take me in...son't you be my kin, for I'm riding on the orphan train, take me in." |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: I'm riding on the orphan train From: Mark Ross Date: 22 Apr 03 - 04:16 PM The song has been recorded by Jody Stecher & Kate Brislin on their HEART SONGS CD on Rounder. The tune is fairly easy. Mark Ross |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: I'm riding on the orphan train From: denise:^) Date: 23 Apr 03 - 04:02 PM Well, I'm not a 'tune posting type,' (don't create ABC files yet...maybe, someday...) but it's also on a CD by a group called Uncle Earl, with the lead sung by Jo Serrapere (can't guarantee my spelling!!). The Michigan Duo 'Tansy Patch' (which includes *me* ;^) also features it in their sets regularly...but we aren't posted, either...sorry! Denise:^) who has sung it enough to be mistaken for one of the orphans! |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: I'm riding on the orphan train From: Mark Ross Date: 23 Apr 03 - 07:17 PM The David Massingill song was written at the same time as Utah's. When they compared the songs(written idependently)they found that they had used a lot of the same imagery! Amazing. I haven't heard Massingill's, but Utah's version of the story is 1st rate. Subject: RE: Tune Req: I'm riding on the orphan train From: denise:^) Date: 24 Apr 03 - 11:20 AM I really like both songs, but Utah Phillips' song, IMHO, is a little less sad. David Massengill's had me nearly sobbing, the first time I heard it! (People have said the same to me, though, about the Phillips song.) I've read several accounts of orphan train riders' experiences, and maybe the happy endings produce more writers, but it seemed that the good experiences far outweighed the bad. I was amazed to learn that the trains ran until 1932 (a fact I always bring up before we sing). I also always remind people to keep in mind that the *intentions* of the Orphan Train organizers were nothing but the best; they returned and checked up on the children, and removed them from homes that were unfit; they did the best they could with the times that they lived in. Too often nowadays, people judge historical figures by today's standards, today's knowledge, today's technology/travel/communication. Denise:^) |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: I'm riding on the orphan train From: GUEST,.gargoyle Date: 25 Apr 03 - 01:33 AM Most children in orphanages were/are not "orphans."
A friend's father from Nebraska, and his seven other, (8 total) brothers and sisters were put up for adoption - in the early 1950's when their dry-lands farm could not produce.
Sincerely, |
