Subject: RE: Saltburn Folk Festival? 9th to 11th Aug From: GUEST,Ray Padgett Date: 18 Jul 02 - 09:34 AM alright what's a Shellback Catter? The Shanty Competition (15th year) takes place in the Con Club on the Saturday. Theresa Tooley won it last yr. Judges this year Dave Webber & Annin Fentiman Single persons entrants must have purchased a ticket!! Large prize for winner, but enter in the spirit of shanty singing for enjoyment, please |
Subject: RE: Saltburn Folk Festival? 9th to 11th Aug From: Snuffy Date: 18 Jul 02 - 09:47 AM alright what's a Shellback Catter?. That's a member of the Mudcat who sings with the Shellback Chorus, such as Col K, Ned Ludd and myself (and Theresa Tooley, whose Mudcat name is Treaties1). There'll probably be a few others there, but I think a lot of the Midlands contingent will be at Squilver. WassaiL! V |
Subject: RE: Saltburn Folk Festival? 9th to 11th Aug From: Snuffy Date: 06 Aug 02 - 07:56 PM Programme and ticket arrived today. Starting the countdown. Plenty of singarounds Friday and Saturday. But there don't appear to be any on Sunday before 4pm, just concerts and sessions! Or are there unadvertised ones anywhere? WassaiL! V |

Subject: RE: Saltburn Folk Festival? 9th to 11th Aug From: Snuffy Date: 08 Aug 02 - 07:18 PM I notice that the Shellbacks are booked to appear at the Marine Hotel from 2 till 4 Saturday (when the Shanty Competition is on at the Con Club. Can't have a Shellback winning two years running!!) WassaiL! V |
Subject: RE: Saltburn Folk Festival? 9th to 11th Aug From: smallpiper Date: 08 Aug 02 - 07:22 PM It seems that no one knows the answer to my earlier question where are the sessions? |
Subject: RE: Saltburn Folk Festival? 9th to 11th Aug From: Snuffy Date: 08 Aug 02 - 08:03 PM Smallpiper,
Fri But you probably won't see me at any of them, 'cos I'll be looking for singarounds, not sessions. EnjoY! V |
Subject: RE: Saltburn Folk Festival? 9th to 11th Aug From: nutty Date: 09 Aug 02 - 03:38 AM Although there is nothing in the programme about sing-arounds on Sunday, look in the upstairs bar of the Victoria, the back bar of the Victoria or the Conservative club. There is usually some singing going on in one of these venues. |
Subject: RE: Saltburn Folk Festival? 9th to 11th Aug From: smallpiper Date: 09 Aug 02 - 08:32 AM Thank yo for that info but it looks like I won't be able to come after all. Maybe next year cheers and have a good time y'all |

Subject: RE: Saltburn Folk Festival? 9th to 11th Aug From: Abuwood Date: 12 Aug 02 - 01:00 PM How was it guys? Did Theresa win the shanty competition again? |
Subject: RE: Saltburn Folk Festival? 9th to 11th Aug From: Snuffy Date: 12 Aug 02 - 07:46 PM Ali, The Shanty competition was 3-4pm Sat, and the Shellbacks had a performance 2-4pm so none of us could enter. As they failed to reach 5 entries it was cancelled. Next year it's to be replaced with a new competition for unaccompanied "traditional-type" singing (which would include shanties), with a trophy in memory of Fred Jordan. So Teresa is the last-ever winner of the Shanty trophy. Apart from the rain it was a terrific festival with some good singing. Vicki and Trefor Williams were with us again for a couple of the gigs. How was Squilver? WassaiL! V |
Subject: RE: Saltburn Folk Festival? 9th to 11th Aug From: Abuwood Date: 13 Aug 02 - 02:55 AM The weather at Squilver was cold and damp but the company warm and friendly. Lots of new friends and a good sing, only wish I could have danced too! |
Subject: RE: Saltburn Folk Festival? 9th to 11th Aug From: Alio Date: 13 Aug 02 - 04:18 AM Someone has offered to present a trophy to Saddleworth festival for a shanty competition, in honour of the late Dave Ritchie. Dave was an excellent traditional singer, and loved singing shanties. Sadly, soon after he came up with the idea of a folk festival in Saddleworth, he was killed. It does seem fitting. If it goes agead it seems I'll have to make sure that it doesn't clash with the Shellbacks appearances! Ali |
Subject: RE: Saltburn Folk Festival? 9th to 11th Aug From: Tig Date: 13 Aug 02 - 11:02 AM Since one of the conditions for entering the Shanty Competition is a PAID FOR weekend ticket the Shellbacks couldn't have entered anyway!!!! Good to see as many of you as I did. it was a fun, though damp, festival. Roll on Whitby. we should be up either Tuesday or Wednesday depending on the state Firecat returns from London in. |
Subject: RE: Saltburn Folk Festival? 9th to 11th Aug From: Abuwood Date: 13 Aug 02 - 12:26 PM It may surprise you Tig, but Shellbacks often have to PAY for the privilidge of singing at a festival! Theresa paid last year, luckily she won and got her money back! |
Subject: RE: Saltburn Folk Festival? 9th to 11th Aug From: magician Date: 13 Aug 02 - 03:45 PM Great festival, damp but what the hell we all enjoyed ourselves. Great to get to know some fellow mud catter's better by way of sitting, chatting, drinking tea and coffee in our on site caravan. High-light for me was to see the John Wright Band again and chatting to al those lovely people. It brought back memories of the of Redcar Festival especially on Sunday night, we had a minutes silence for old Fred. Then Marie, Vin and Pete Betts finished of the night in good old fashioned style, snging some of Pete and Vini's old favourite songs such as "Let's Sing It Again" Fantastic. Tiring, but a throughly enjoyable festival, thanks to Johnny Taylor and Paul Lucas, and to the people that made the festival. Gillie (Posing as Magician) |

Subject: RE: Saltburn Folk Festival? 9th to 11th Aug From: Herga Kitty Date: 13 Aug 02 - 05:54 PM OK, so here is a postscript to last year's Saltburn and Whitby:- Plan A at Jim Mageean's Wednesday shanty session at the Endeavour at Whitby last year was for all the women singers (except Theresa Tooley) to sit near where Jim Mageean was expected to start the singing, so their repertoire of shanties wouldn't have been exhausted by the time the singing reached them. Plan B was the result of someone suggesting that by day 4 of his maritime singarounds Jim might have decided to send the singing round in the other direction…. SING 'EM LOUD - SHANTY SESSION PLAN B* Kitty Vernon 22 August 2001
I'm feeling sad and so forlorn
We weedy women high and shrill
hile they are belting out each word
But there is one who breaks the rule she TUNE: Bring 'em down

Subject: RE: Saltburn Folk Festival? 9th to 11th Aug From: GUEST,Folkmonster Date: 13 Aug 02 - 06:37 PM Is it just me, or wouldn't it be a good idea if the web site actually mentioned just where Saltburn IS? (Of course, we all know its the town just down from Invergordon), otherwise foreign readers might mistake the real location for say, Saltburn-by-the-sea or some such backwater. ;O) FM |
