Subject: RE: Tune Req: Keg of Brandy From: radriano Date: 22 Jul 02 - 12:17 PM I first heard this from Robbie O'Connell who said that he had found one verse and written the remaining two himself. Laura, I know you said you had the lyrics but I found the following while browsing at the Bodleian Library site: I'M OFTEN DRUNK, BUT SELDOM SOBER Bodleian Library Broadside Ballads Harding Collection B11 (1731) The sea is wide and I can't get over Neither have I got wings to fly Come fetch to me then a little boat For to carry over my true love and me Chorus: I'm often drunk, but seldom sober I am a rover in every degree When I'm drinking I'm often thinking How I shall go in my love's company In London city the girls are pretty The streets are paved with marble stone And my love she is as clever a woman As ever trod upon English ground I wish I was in Dublin city As far as e'er my eyes could see Or else across yon briny ocean Where there is no lawyers can follow me It's love is handsome, and love is pretty And love is charming while it's new But as love grows older, it does grow colder And fades away like the morning dew I laid my head on a cask of brandy It was my fancy I do declare And when I'm drinking, I'm always thinking How I shall gain my love's company There is two nags in my father's stable They prick their ears when they hear the hounds And my true love is a clever young man As ever trod on English ground Your silly sportsmen leave off your coursing I'll say no more till I have had a drink For when I'm dead it will all be over I hope my friends will bury me radriano |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Keg of Brandy From: GUEST,Laura Silsbee Date: 23 Jul 02 - 11:01 AM I appreciate the help so far. This set of lyrics is a little different than the one that I have--I may do some substituting! Still hoping for the sheet music. If I try to write it down myself it will take years! |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Keg of Brandy From: Bob Bolton Date: 24 Jul 02 - 12:07 AM G'day Laura and radriano,
That's an interesting set of lyrics to match tunes ... one moment I think it ought to have the tune of the Scots night-visiting song beginning: Then the next moment it seems to need the tune of Carrickfergus! (Come to think of it, I seem to remember this lyric appearing in a discussion of the origins of Carrickfergus.) Regards, Bob Bolton |
