Subject: RE: Sessions around Macclesfield area From: greg stephens Date: 23 Jul 02 - 07:51 AM Lord Combermere, Audlem, is permanent on Mondays but it varies wildly in attendance. There were twenty musicians at least yesterday, and a team of clog dancers, but that was exceptional I think(I dont go regualarly). The Red Lion in Market Drayton Thursday session, by the way, has died. |

Subject: RE: Sessions around Macclesfield area From: Pied Piper Date: 23 Jul 02 - 08:39 AM Hi Hawker. Funnily enough I was doing a funeral in Mac yesterday and bumped into a musician mate who told me that the session at the Castle (on Fridays I think) had ended. If your looking for a friendly session not too far from Mac, we have one at the "Peveril of the Peak" Great Bridgwater St (behind the Bridgwater Hall) central Manchester on Tuesdays. The mix of stuff is eclectic (English, Scottish, Irish, and some times Greek and Klesma. We start pretty early so if you want a seat get there at 8:30pm at the latest. All the best PP. |
Subject: RE: Sessions around Macclesfield area From: GUEST,stigWeard Date: 23 Jul 02 - 09:13 AM True about the Castle – we finished it last Friday after having had enough of the landlord's rather unpleasant attitude. We're looking for somewhere else to play in the town on Friday nights, as it would be a real shame to loose the only town centre Irish session. The Harrington Arms in Gawsworth is well worth a visit on Fridays, with a mixture of English, Irish and some bluegrass stuff chucked in. The ale is great and the pub itself is arguably the best in England (ooo! that'll stir it up! :) ) in my 'umble opinion . I think Pete Blackthornes' Puss in Boots session is on the first Tuesday of every month. The Farmers Arms Irish session in Wilmslow happens every third thursday (I think). Further afield, if you're about on Sunday try the Whistling Jig in Stockport for some fine Irish music, though you can get 20+ players up there so it's an ensemble performance, but the quality's good and you may get to see Mike McGoldrick if you're lucky.

Subject: RE: Sessions around Macclesfield area From: Pied Piper Date: 23 Jul 02 - 09:32 AM Hi stigWeard. I'm glad to here that the Harrington is still going (though I suspect its less colourfull without Mrs Bailly senior). I've not been down in ages, maybe I can talk some one into giving me a lift. All the best PP. |
Subject: RE: Sessions around Macclesfield area From: Hawker Date: 23 Jul 02 - 11:23 AM We LOVE the harrington session, and spent a memorable evening there the night before our wedding 13 years ago! Really miss Mrs Bailey Senior, but glad to see pub didn't change too much. Sadly we wont be up on Friday this time, we always try to get there if we can! Sad about The Castle, we only went there once when we were home and caught it on a bad night, several years ago. Do post new venue if you find one, so we'll know for future visits! Cheers, Lucy |
