Subject: Catters websites From: Hawker Date: 23 Jul 02 - 11:39 AM Perhaps this has already been done, if so I apologise, but having just completed my very first website, which I am proud of 'cos I did it all myself, I wondered if any of you catters would like to share your websites with us, so we can all take a peek, and know a little bit more about who we are communicating with! Mine is: click here Hope that works! I look forward to seeing your creations too, bet they are better than my effort, but we all gotta start somewhere! Cheers, Lucy |

Subject: RE: Catters websites From: GUEST Date: 23 Jul 02 - 11:54 AM Not bad, Lucy A suggestion, don't put all the text in bold. It's harder to read Oh yes, and lose the background on the home page. For a first effort, it's pretty good! |
Subject: RE: Catters websites From: aussiebloke Date: 23 Jul 02 - 12:05 PM G'day Lucy Like you said - gotta start somewhere... Next one will be better, and the one after that better still... Subject: RE: Catters websites From: GUEST Date: 23 Jul 02 - 12:22 PM Nice site, aussiebloke but, please, please, please get rid of the stupid javascript that causes the cursor to be followed by an alphanumeric trail. It's very old hat, very annoying, means the page takes longer to load and has no redeeming qualities whatsoever. All it says is "hey, i'm cool! I can use javascript" To which the reader thinks, "twat" OK? Good site, I like it |
Subject: RE: Catters websites From: aussiebloke Date: 23 Jul 02 - 12:45 PM G'day GUEST... Isn't it wonderful how the good Lord, in his (or perhaps her) infinite wisdom chose to make us all a little different? aussiebloke |

Subject: RE: Catters websites From: MMario Date: 23 Jul 02 - 12:59 PM aussiebloke - much as I hate to agree with our faceless "friend" - he/she/it has a point. Especially for those people who are trying to view your site over a dial-up connection - that one feature ALONE would probably prevent many of them from being able to see your site in a reasonable length of time. |
Subject: RE: Catters websites From: aussiebloke Date: 23 Jul 02 - 01:27 PM G'day MMario - I'm always up for learning something... The codes in question account for only 6kb in a 13kb page - plus graphics another 13kb - making the loading of the whole page a total of 26kb. Does 6kb of Javascript really make such an appreciable difference to loading times? cheers aussiebloke |
Subject: RE: Catters websites From: GUEST,McGrath of Harlow Date: 23 Jul 02 - 01:35 PM The Profiles facility of Mudcat - in Members Photos and Info, under Quick Links - is a good place to put a link to websites that is going to be there permanently, and therefore easier to access.
Clever stuff, much more sophisticated than mine, Kevin and Lucy - though I've got some sound files (RealAudio), which I imagine you'll start having some time. "Hesperus" looks intriguing, but I found it a bugger to read - I always do with the white on black pages.
Those trails on aussieblokes' site are only on the index. Most of it's straightforward, which I like. No frames, so far as I could see, which I'm all for. As my own sites indicate. Here they are:
The Moving Finger - mostly listings of local folk activities
The Moving Finger Songbag - songs, mostly mine. And here's my songs site. |

Subject: RE: Catters websites From: CarolC Date: 23 Jul 02 - 09:09 PM Nice thread Lucy.
Here's mine. I apologize for the pop-ups. Some day I may upgrade to the service that doesn't have them.
http://www.geocities.com/squeezemusette/ This is my first attempt also. I think of it as more of a photo gallery than a website, which accounts for the lack of text. I'll probably include some favorite links eventually, though. |

Subject: RE: Catters websites From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 23 Jul 02 - 10:17 PM I don't have a personal site (I find my own life very interesting, but I doubt if anyone else would), but I do run a couple of sites for organisations I'm involved with. folk-network.com belongs to the South Riding Folk Network, and is intended as an information resource, so it's mostly text. I didn't build the original site, so the appearance doesn't reflect my own ideas about design, but I've added a lot of content since taking it over. I intend eventually to take it out of frames, but that's going to involve quite a lot of re-designing, so it isn't likely to happen soon; the constant struggle to keep what's there already reasonably up-to-date is enough just now. There's also yorkshire-folk-arts.com, this time belonging to Yorkshire Folk Arts. This one I did actually design myself (except for the logo), with the intention of keeping it very simple and clear. It should display in whatever font the viewer's browser uses as a default. Just a very small one as yet, and with no photos for the time being; we should soon have a development worker, though, who I hope will be adding content and perhaps some design input as well. There's always a risk that I might have to advertise for work in the future, though, so I have a domain name registered in case I need it. Meanwhile, it turns out that I have work samples online that I've only just discovered; though they're rough scans from old copies of Oink! comic of some 16 years ago (my style has moved on a bit since then!) when I was still working as J.T. Dogg. They're at Rob Sedgebeer's site: Oink! Online: The Streethogs (first series). There's other stuff lurking about out there, too, but I'm not sure where. |
Subject: RE: Catters websites From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 23 Jul 02 - 10:35 PM I hadn't realised how difficult it is to navigate Rob's site; rather less than intuitive! For what it's worth, the second link above would be more appropriately Streethogs Special. |
Subject: RE: Catters websites From: katlaughing Date: 23 Jul 02 - 10:39 PM Wow, Malcolm! excellent work...would love to see some of your more recent, too! Alison, Rosie looks beautiful and so do you. Subject: RE: Catters websites From: GUEST,Dale Date: 24 Jul 02 - 06:01 PM Mine rarely gets updated, and the opening page least of all, so I can't even say that it is "work in progress" anymore. Still, there are some things there to recommend it.
The page labeled Test! Test! has some photographs of a rather random lot of musicians, some quite rare. The one labeled The Extra Page has a few sound files that may be of interest. The remainder are clearly labeled, and contain a hodge podge of lyrics, sheet music and sound files for the songs mentioned. Mostly, they were put up in response (and linked) to mentions here at Mudcat, though a couple were not. If you question the size of some of the music jpgs, that is because I intended them to be of reasonable quality for printing out.
I'd say that the one entitled A Little Talk (recorded by Ernest Phipps and his Holiness Singers in 1928) would be a good example of what you'll find there, though I see that I have an outdated link to the Thoro Harris biography. Need to fix that ~~ someday. Well, having made all my apologies, here it is. Good Old Songs Now excuse me while I go exploring at some of the other sites. |
