Need the words to this song. Part of which goes
O mine Papa,
To me he was so wonderful
O mine Papa
To me he was so good
.

I know it's not a folk song but maybe someone can help. It was popular about 1955 ?. I can't remember the singer. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Jimmy

Oh! My Papa
words by John Turner & Geoffrey Parsons
music by Paul Burkhard

Oh, my papa, to me he was so wonderful;
Oh, my papa, to me he was so good.
No one could be so gentle and so lovable;
Oh, my papa, he always understood.

Gone are the days when he would take me on his knee;
And with a smile, he'd change my tears to laughter.

Oh, my papa, so funny, so adorable;
Always the clown, so funny in his way.
Oh, my papa, to me he was so wonderful;
Deep in my heart I miss him so today.
Oh, my papa,
Oh, my papa,
Oh! my papa.

Genie linked to the previous thread, which gives the original (copyright 1948) lyrics by Swiss conductor/composer Paul Burkhard. That thread indicates that the song may have appeared in a musical that came out in 1939. The English lyrics, "Oh! My Pa-Pa," were written by John Turner and Geoffrey Parsons, published in 1953.
...or so says The Book of World-Famous Music.

In the interest of consolidation, here are the chords, as posted in another thread.

The first line has come back to me, it was "Oh mypapa, to me you were so horrible". It wasnt rude, no child molesting I think, just general mistreatment of some kind.

Here are the words [Written by Paul Burkhard (1911-1977) for the musical "Der Schwarze Hecht" (which translates to "The black pickerel") premiered in April, 1939]

O MEIN PAPA

Papa wie ein Pfeil
Sprang hinauf auf die Seil.
Eh la hopp, eh la hopp, eh la hopp!
Er spreizte die Beine
Ganz breit auseinand',
Sprang hoch in die Luft
Und stand auf der Hand.
Eh la hopp, eh la hopp, eh la hopp!
Lachte: Haha!
Und machte: Haßa
Ganz sachte Haßa
Und rief: Eh la hopp!
Eh la hopp! Eh la hopp!

Er ritt auf die Seil
Ganz hoch in die Luft.
Eh la hopp, eh la hopp, eh la hopp!
Das konnte er machen
Zwölf mal ohne Mih!
Er lachte dazu
Und fürchte sich nie!
Eh la hopp, eh la hopp, eh la hopp!

O mein Papa
War eine wunderbare Clown.
O mein Papa
War eine große Kinstler.
Hoch auf die Seil,
Wie war er herrlich anzuschau´n!
O mein Papa
War eine schöne Mann!

Wie, wie er lacht,
Sein Mund sie sein so breit, so rot
Und seine Aug'
Wie Diamanten strahlen.
O mein Papa
War eine wunderbare Clown.
O mein Papa
War eine große Kinstler!
Hoch auf die Seil,
Wie war er herrlich anzuschau'n!
O mein Papa
War eine schöne Mann!
Ein schöner Mann!
Ein schöner Mann!

And the English ones (don't ask me for the translator):

OH, MY PAPA

Oh, my papa, to me he was so wonderful
Oh, my papa, to me he was so good
No one could be, so gentle and so lovable
Oh, my papa, he always understood.

Gone are the days
when he could take me on his knee
And with a smile
he'd change my tears to laughter

Oh, my papa, so funny, so adorable
Always the clown so funny in his way

Oh, my papa, to me he was so wonderful
Deep in my heart I miss him so today.

Subject: Lyr Add: OH MY PAPPY (Homer & Jethro)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 11 Dec 03 - 10:52 PM

Lyrics transcribed from the sound file at http://www.geocities.com/u2page6/

OH MY PAPPY
(As sung by Homer & Jethro)

Oh, my pappy, he left the farm and moved to town.
He got so old he couldn't horse around.
Oh, my pappy has got more nerve than anyone.
Now he can't budge since he ate mother's fudge.

The doctor walked in with a needle and a grin.
He gave him penicillin where he wasn't illin'.
They took him into surgery just to see what made him ail.
When they operated, they opened mother's male.

When we took pappy home, you should have seen him spread the gloom.
He thought that he was dyin', so he went in the livin' room.
Oh, my pappy! Sometimes he's good; sometimes he's bad,
But he can't replace my love for Old Granddad.

(SOUND EFFECT of pulling a stopper from a bottle, pouring, drinking, gasping, and then:) Whoo-ooh!

[Recorded by Homer & Jethro on "Homer & Jethro Strike Back," 1962.]

Hi - I moved your message over to the thread that has the German lyrics. This Amazon.de search gives 13 pages of recordings of "O Mein Papa," but I don't see one right off by a young boy (well, there's this one, but the boy is playing a trumpet.
I have a Deutsche Schlager CD box set with a 1951 German recording by Orchester Bert Kaempfert (follow the link for his interesting story). Trouble is, the choristers keep singing "O Mein Papa" over and over, and a trumpet replaces the singers on the rest of the song.

There was a boy singer in the sixties (actually he was Dutch but sang in German as well) that recorded this kind of stuff. Another was Harald Martin (I think), a German boy singer in the eighties, who might have recorded it.

I've got a recording of it that my brother brought back from Bavaria in the 60s. It's packed right now, but I'll see if I can find it, soon, and see who is singing it. It's not a boy, not that I remember.

Eddie Fisher was married to Debbie Reynolds when he went off with Elizabeth Taylor. All mediocre.

Best and most successful german version of "Oh, mein Papa" was recorded by Lys Assia in 1950.

I know "Oh My Papa" as one side of a 45 by Jim Ed Brown and the Browns (the other side was "The Old Lamplighter" which was actually the "A" side). That record was probably from somewhere between 1959 and 1962, so it was close to 10 years old when I was listening to it. I remember I learned to play it on a small electric organ we had -- hey, by then it was the late sixties, early seventies, didn't everyone have some sort of electric organ? LOL
