cowpie is the best place to look for country lyrics. And here is a link to the words there.

I once heard a version of this in which the singer had replaced all the American names with places like Barnsley and Tooting. I fell about But no doubt to an American they'd seem just as exotic and strange as Hank Snow's list does to us.

FWIW DEPT:

I heard Hank Snow explain on a live broadcast one time how the song was written by Australian Geoff Mack and was 'pitched' to Hank. The original version had all Australian towns & cities.

Hank liked the tune but surmised that an American audience would probably not 'Cotton' too much to a song with Australian town & city names in it and and requested that Mack substitute American Towns & Cities.

Geoff Mack gets my vote for his outstanding writing & re-writing effort and 'Ditto' for Hank Snow on the recitation...

Neither does Copernic, and it usually digs up a few that Google does not find.

There is a version I've Been Everywhere (In Texas) by Brian Burns, and I have heard one by George Fox that is different in the intro, and of course, Stompin' Tom gives it his original stamp as well, giving it a Canadian flavor.

I'll try to look those up over the next few days, but won't feel the least bit hurt if someone beats me to 'em.

From "The Eagle & The Snake: Songs Of The Texians", c 2001, Bandera Records.

I was totin' my pack along the dusty Amarillo road,
When along came a semi with a high and canvas covered load.
He said: "If you're goin' to Amarillo, Mac, I'll give you a ride."
So I climbed up into the cab and then I settled down inside.
He asked me if I'd seen a road with so much dust and sand,
An' I said: "Listen, bud, I've traveled every road in this here land."

      I've been everywhere, man.
      I've been everywhere, man.
I've crossed the deserts bare, man,
      Breathed the mountain air, man.
Of travel I've had my share, man:
      I've been everywhere.

I've been to Waco, Hico, Hondo, Navasota,
Winnsboro, Jacksboro, Hillsboro, Santa Rosa.
Austin, Houston, Galveston, Texarkana,
Frisco, Buffalo, Conroe, Corsicana.
Goliad, Groesbeck, Glen Rose, Red Oak,
Post Oak, Live Oak, Lone Oak, no joke.

      I've been everywhere, man.
      I've been everywhere, man.
I've crossed the deserts bare, man,
      Breathed the mountain air, man.
Wind blowin' in my hair, man:
      I've been everywhere.

I've been to Krugerville, Pflugerville, Van Horn, Val Verde,
Brackettville, Bartonville, Beeville, Bulverde.
Bear Creek, Cedar Creek, Mill Creek, Mineola,
Maypearl, Monahans, Telephone, Tuscola.
Redwater, Round Rock, Round Top, Round Lake,
Sour Lake, Southlake, Springlake, for Pete's sake.

      I've been everywhere, man.
      I've been everywhere, man.
I've crossed the deserts bare, man,
      Breathed the mountain air, man.
      Drove my tyres bare, man:
      I've been everywhere.

I've been to Greenville, Gatesville, Gainesville, Alameda,
Kerrville, Kellyville, Bastrop, Benavides.
Somerville, Smithville, Stephenville, Prairie View,
Luckenbach, Longview, Plainview, Idalou.
Justin, Junction, Panorama, Pasadena,
Angelina, and Lorena...see what I mean-a,

      I've been everywhere, man.
      I've been everywhere, man.
      Crossed the deserts bare, man,
      Breathed the mountain air, man,
      Lottsa wear n' tear, man:
      Well, I've been everywhere.

Now let me see,
I've been to Valley Mills, Pine Mills, Dime Box, Duncanville,
New Home, New Hope, New Deal, Liberty Hill.
Rockport, Rock Creek, Bridgeport, Brownwood,
Cleburne, Comanche, Cut & Shoot, Cottonwood.
Bayview, Bayside, Baytown, Bay City,
Falls City, Center City, Bridge City, what a pity.

      I've been everywhere, man.
      I've been everywhere, man.
      Crossed the deserts bare, man,
      Breathed the mountain air, man.
Travel, I've had my share, man:
      Well, I've been everywhere.

Yeah, when it comes to travelin' Texas, friends,
I've been everywhere, hey.

So we've got:

*The original, Australia
*New Zealand
*United States
*Texas (pretty much a country to itself ~~ ask most any Texan)

Then there are the known versions we don't yet have the lyrics for:
Canada (this one is a partial, as it starts out like the U.S. version)
Would the version McGrath of Harlow mentions be from England?

And of course, the beer version. I would think that would have to go in the parody column.

I'm still waiting for the Czech version.

Rolf Harris had his version, using British and Welsh towns, on his "Tie Me Kangaroo Down" album (that's not the title of the album, I think tho that it was his first) back in the '60s.

Wish I could find my copy of that album....

From C. W. "Bill" Getz's "The Wild Blue Yonder" (San Mateo, CA: Redwood Press, 1981):

Well, I took off from Ubon in a thick and heavy driving rain,
I toted my bombs up to green anchor tanker plane.
I had a brand new AC riding in the front seat,
A guy with six months RTU, before that a "Tweet".
He asked me if my counters numbered much more than ten.
I said, "Listen, Mac, there ain't no place up there I ain't been."

CHORUS (repeat after each verse):

I've been everywhere, man, I've been everywhere.
I've crossed the mountains bare, man,
    I've seen the flak-filled air.
Of SAMs I've had my share, man,
    I've been everywhere.

Hanoi, Haiphong, Phuc Yen, Yen Bai,
Longson, Hoa Lac, Phu Tho, Son Tay,
Mao Binh, Nam Dinh, Tai Binh, Bac Ninh,
Thai Nguyen, Gia Lam, Wiet Tri, Do Son,
Thud Ridge, MiG Ridge, Northeast Railroad,
Bac Mai, Ninh Grang, Bac Giange, Poo-Yang.

Sam Neue, Nan Ban, Ban Quang, Son La,
Bat Lake, Dong Hoi, Quang Khe, Thanh Hoa,
Red Route, Black Route, Blue Route, Purple Route,
Channel 97 and the Red and Black River Valley,
Landslide, Waterside, Down the slide, Dang my hide,
    In town, Crosstown, Uptown, Downtown.

Some of the place names look to me to be misspelled, but I haven't had time to check them.

the Rolf Harris version referred to above semms to be basically the British Towns one - but he does go partly into another one which seems to be a start of 'the Scottish one' - but sounded rather Welsh to me...

If you go to this page: http://www.rolfharrisjukebox.com/everywhere.html, you will see a crude animation of Rolf Harris, and hear his recording of I'VE BEEN EVERYWHERE which uses mainly British place names (but I think I hear at least one Irish one). (The joke in verse 4 is that the names are Welsh, although he calls them Scottish.) I've got a good chunk of it transcribed, but many names still elude me. Here goes:

[Slow tempo at first:]
Well, I've been ev'rywhere.

I was drivin' my minimotor way down by the sea
When a scruffy-lookin' hitchhiker thumbed a lift from me.
I said, "Hop up inside, boy. Where you plan to go from there?"
He says, "I don't give a continental, castle boy (?), 'cause I've been ev'rywhere."

[Speeding up:]
One, two, one two three four.

CHORUS: I've been ev'rywhere, man.
I've been ev'rywhere, man.
Never a trouble or care, man.
I've never paid me fare, man,
And of travel I've had me share, man.
I've been ev'rywhere.

1. Been to Bradford, Guildford, Dartford, Littlehampton,
Bedford, ...ford, Hereford, Wolverhampton,
Shrewsbury, Canterbury, Asbury, Liverpool,
..., ..., ..., ...,
Whitehall, Bramhall, ..., ...,
Newport, Southport, ...port, ...port. CHORUS

2. Been to Farnborough, Edinburgh, Peterborough, ...,
..., Loughborough, Scarborough, ...,
..., ..., ..., l...,
..., ..., ..., Tipperary
Hempstead, Wanstead, ...stead, Woodstock,
B..., ..., ..., ...ock. CHORUS

SPOKEN: Change here.

3. Been to Weymouth, Yarmouth, Bournemouth, Huddersfield,
Lewisham, Faversham, Portesham, Sheffield,
E..., ..., Southend, ...head,
Birmingham, Nottingham, D...ham, Holyhead,
Cambridge, Tonbridge, Knightsbridge, ...,

4. SLOWLY, HESITATINGLY: I've been—to—hey, this is difficult!—I've been to—
Llandudno—Llanelli—...—...—...
SPOKEN: No, it's no use. I'll never get those Scottish place names in a million years. Let's get back to the English version.

5. BACK TO FAST TEMPO: I've been to Westminster, Southminster, Kidderminster, ...,
Eastbourne, ...bourne, ..., Paddington,
Bolton, Paignton, Stockton, Inverness,
R...wick, ...wick, Chiswick, Dungeness
Mansfield, Sheffield, Enfield, ...,
..., ..., ..., .... CHORUS

I've been here, there, ev'rywhere.
I've been ev'rywhere.

* * *
p.s. I wish I could figure out how to play the audio file directly using RealPlayer (or Media Player, or Winamp) because that would give me the ability to stop the song anywhere and replay just the parts that are difficult to understand, but as it is, all I can do is hear the entire song, from beginning to end, over and over. Any ideas?

I have a free standalone Flash Player - with a plugin for IE - stop pause start etc buttons.

You can use the plugin to save the .swf file to your HD from the page you have gone to. Seems to not be happy with SWF version 10 files - but seems to like all others. The swf files then work like any other media file - move, copy, etc.

If anyone knows of any other such beasties, please tell me.

I have this CD on order. Its an oldie and a goodie. When I get it I will post to this board with the lyrics. I remember a lot of them but can't be guaranteed after all these years! :)

He said, "Whats that pubic hair thats a lying on your bun? I said I didn't see is lying there, are you sure its really one? .... I've been all 'round this country and I know pubic hair..."

"Well, I've seen pubic hair man, I've seen pubic hair man...sticking out here and there man, I've seen pubic hair! I've seen long ones, short ones, little curly blonde ones, fat ones, skinny ones, sticking from your d*** ones...I've seen pubic hair!!!"

yeah that Texas version looks easy, but let me tell you it took me two whole days to learn it by heart and be able to sing it! My best friend and I sing at a place called Cross Timbers Opry in Stephenville, Texas and we would always giggle when we got to that part, but we are over that now. But actually, I think the other versions would be impossible for me to learn, as I had already heard of almost all the Texas towns before. Also in the 3 chorus it is tires (naturally) not tyres. But at least the cities are right as I have found on several sites where they put Bartlesville (Oklahoma, not Texas) instead if Bartonville "and I've been to" should have been Beinevides and Anareina was mistaken for and Lorena, and also they left out Junction and put in Joshua, but oh well at least Dale got the right set. Well, there's this version from www.martinek.us/humor/songs.html.

Those Vietnamese locations look like the way the Incountry group sing the song. Vietnamese is a phonetic language anyway.

Dave

Pubic Hair Song

I was having me a burger in a dirty greasy-spoon cafe.
I was eatin' it with relish when the man beside me turned to say,
"What's that pubic hair doin' layin' in your bun?"
I said,"I never saw it sittin' there, are you sure it's really one?"
He stood up on the table, and said,"Now looky here,
"I've traveled all over this country, and I know pubic hair."

(CHORUS):

"I've seen pubic hair, man. I've never liked 'em there, man.
I've even got my share, man, beneath my underwear, man.
Stickin' out here and there, man. I've seen pubic hair.

"I've seen great ones, straight ones, always-on-your-plate ones,
Long ones, strong ones, little curly blonde ones,
Red ones, dead ones, layin'-on-the-head ones,
Black ones, brown ones, little ducky-down ones,
Short ones, thick ones, growin'-from-your-dick ones,
Grown ones, shown ones, lone ones, chrome ones.

(CHORUS)

"I've seen bushy ones, cushy ones, up-against-your-pussy ones,
Saved ones, shaved ones, floatin'-in-your-gravy ones,
Dirty ones, flirty ones, fluffin'-up-the-birdy ones,
Neat ones, sweet ones, on-the-toilet-seat ones,
Hipper ones, gripper ones, catch-'em-in-the-zipper ones,
Grown ones, shown ones, lone ones, phony ones

(CHORUS)

Jim Dixon:
A good start, I've been listening as well, and can add/correct some.
Others please feel free to correct me in turn!

1. Been to Bradford, Guildford, Dartford, Littlehampton,
Bedford, Chingford, Hereford, Wolverhampton,
Shrewsbury, Canterbury, Aylesbury, Liverpool,
Scunthorpe, Sandthorpe??,Mablethorpe, Hartlepool
Whitehall, Bramhall, Mildenhall, Davenport
Newport, Southport, Stockport, "Hi Sport!". CHORUS

2. Been to Farnborough, Edinburgh, Peterborough, Petersham,
Middlesborough, Loughborough, Scarborough, Walthamstow,
..., ..., ..., l...,
..., ..., Hounslow, Tipperary
Hempstead, Wanstead, ...stead, Woodstock,
B..., ..., ..., "Watcha Cock!". CHORUS

SPOKEN: Change Gear. (sound effect of manual gear change)

3. Been to Weymouth, Yarmouth, Bournemouth, Huddersfield,
Lewisham, Faversham, Portesham, Sheffield,
Land's End, Mile End, Southend, Birkenhead,
Birmingham, Nottingham, Gillingham, Holyhead,
Cambridge, Tonbridge, Knightsbridge, ...,
Edgware, Brockweir, Carstairs, "Who cares?" CHORUS

4. SLOWLY, HESITATINGLY: I've been—to—hey, this is difficult!—I've been to—
Llandudno, Llanelli, Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwll. . . (fails before completing this place name!)
SPOKEN: No, it's no use. I'll never get those Scottish place names in a million years. Let's get back to the English version.

5. BACK TO FAST TEMPO: I've been to Westminster, Southminster, Kidderminster, Accrington,
Eastbourne, Southbourne, Sittingbourne, Paddington,
Bolton, Paignton, Stockton, Inverness,
Renwick, Brunswick, Chiswick, Dungeness
Mansfield, Sheffield, Enfield, ...,
..., ..., ..., .... CHORUS

I've been here, there, ev'rywhere.
I've been ev'rywhere.

It appears that each verse ends with a comment, "Hi Sport", "Watcha Cock", "Who Cares", which may confuse those only looking for place names

CHEERS

Nigel

Bravo, Nigel, and thanks! You've added about 20 missing names to the text. (We need more help!) However, I've checked your names in The Ordnance Survey's gazetteer and I've found no such places in the UK as Sandthorpe or Middlesborough.

Should Middlesborough be Middlesbrough?
Should Sandthorpe be Stanthorpe?

I've never noticed the expression "whatcha cock" before, but I was amused to find it at several places on the Internet, for example The Skinhead Hamlet (which I find hilarious).

I saw the author of the original "I've Been Everywhere", Geoff Mack, last night on ABC-TV here in Oz, where they are re-running the very interesting history of Oz pop music show "Love Is In the Air". Last night's episode featured our apparent Australian love affair with The Novelty Song!!!

It seems that in December 1961, Geoff and wife Tabby, were performing in a Kings Cross nightclub of dubious repute. The travelling tent variety shows where they had successfully made a living for years, had been killed off by the advent of television in Australia.
He had written this song as an opener, I think, and didn't think too highly of it - but in walked LUCKY STARR, who asked for the song - and as that other excellent Oz song says "From Little Things, Big Things Grow" ... but apparently, the song has successfully funded their retirement at least!!!

Cheers! R-J

Jim:
Middlesbrough, has been mentioned on a TV show recently pointing out that sign painters in the towm itself cannot agree on the spelling.
Sandthorpe, your version is probably correct, I did indicate uncertainty with the question marks
