Subject: Help! - Identify this artist.
From: smorodina
Date: 03 Aug 02 - 05:07 PM

Hi, I've posted this before as a guest, but I'd like some help in identifying this artist or artists. We have these tracks on a tape recorded some time ago, but no information at all. With some help here I now know the titles of a few tracks, but one in particular seems to be completely unknown - track 4 (our favourite). I don't even know if these are all the same artist. If some of you could give them a listen and maybe help identifying them it would be great. They are mp3, but all quite small - mostly between half Mb to 1Mb.

01 Mary and the Soldier 02 The Gypsy Laddie 03 Penny Wager 04 Unknown 05 Ride Lassie Ride? 06 Instrumental 07 Hard Times Come Again No More 08 Unknown2

Thanks,

Andy

Number 4 seems to be Shamrock Shores. If you do a search on www.google, it looks as though it has been done by several groups. Sorry I can help with who your artist is on that one, though. Oops, sorry, spoke too soon, I think. Looks like this is a different one.
It's nice that you've included the mp3...makes it easier and fun to see what we can find out. Thanks!

kat

Is it an all-male tape? I've heard Mary and the Soldier sung by Andy Irvine, The Gypsy Laddie by umpteen people (at least nine of them male), and Hard Times by De Dannan with Eleanor Shanley in the lead. Otherwise I'm sorry to say I can't help. Maybe if you looked for the exact lyrics in the DT, or posted parts of them, someone would recognise a particular version.

#4 is "Paddy's Shamrock Shore." I can't find the recording by searching, but it does sound like a good one!

I still think #4 is Robbie O'Connell, but Hard Times definitely is NOT Robbie. It's close harmony, 4? voices perhaps one female. If not female, it's a high tenor. Robbie did stuff with the Clancy Bros, but it doesn't sound like them at all.

One of the things I saw on google had the Rovers listed as one of the groups when I was searching for Paddy's Shamrock Shores. Don't know if that helps.

I am not at all convinced that they are all the same artist. #5 especially sounds different. Almost country. Neither can I find anything that says Robbie O'Connell recorded Paddy's Shamrock Shore. Oh well.

Well, tracks 1 and 2 are definitely different artistes (that's as far as I've got so far).

#1 sounds like a young Paul Brady, with a nice group of Irish musicians-whistle, fiddle, banjo, guitar...

#2 sounds like American accents in close harmony, with the lead singer attempting a Scottish accent.

I think that no. 1 is Andy Irvine. A friend has a CD with Andy and David Byrne, I think, doing this song. The arrangement is slower on the CD as I remember, but there is a similarity in the singers in both versions. Can't identify the others but have enjoyed the listening.

#3 Dublin male singer with guitar. I really like this one.
#4 Dublin male singer same one as in #3?), Paddy's Shamrock Shore (not the same song as Kat's link above- never heard this one before.
#5 American (Southern?) accents
#6 fiddle(s) & mandolin with guitar accompaniment- doesn't sound Irish, very nice reel playing. I know the names of 2 of the 4, but blowed if I can think of them now.
#7 Very interesting close harmonies, Irish and american accents?
#8 was unobtainable.

track # 7 'Hard Times Come Again no More'.....was done by Mary Black + the McGarrigle sisters, one of their sons (Rufus)and EmyLou Harris...which might account for the American / Irish influence. It was a thing called the' Transatlantic Sessions' But I'm only guessing here , cos pc wont let me play your link. Mal.

Interesting challenge. No answers I'm afraid, just wanted to check in, tell ya we're giving a listen.

Your number 4 singer is a good ballad singer who reminds me of Jim McCann, but from the simple guitar only arrangement one has to suspect a good demo from a performer who is only known locally. Our best bet is if someone who digs through demo tapes to book for Celtic festivals recognizes somebody.

Sorry I can't help, but we're tryin'!

Okay, fixed no 8. Thanks for listening. It's really frustrating that nobody seems to recognise the artists! I don't know if the mp3s are clear enough to hear it, but the pops and crackles suggest a vinyl source. This probably means that it's fairly old and less likely to be a demo. I don't know who compiled the tape, but I think it's all from the same album, so it may be a compilation or sampler. One last point - the tape originated in eastern Europe, so there's a very very small possibility that the artists are from that region. However, I don't think this is very likely (despite the large number of Celtic bands on the continent), because of the faint dialogue at the beginning of track 06 which is spoken in English. Anyway, I hope you'll keep trying.

Andy

Nr. 1 is definately not Brady, might be a young Andy Irvine but I don't think so.

Hard Times is all male voices, as far as I can tell, so not the Mary Black/McGarrigle version. It has fiddle, banjo and guitar accompaniment.

#8 ("When first I came to Finland...') sounds like a modern composition in the (Irish) traditional style, never heard it before. Possibly the same Dublin male singer :0) and very nice too.

I doubt anyone is still wondering about this, but 12 years after posting this query, I finally found out who this is. Believe it or not, I posted the 4th track on youtube and got a copyright claim from the artists record company which revealed the answer. The band is called 'Korkkijalka' and is, in fact, mainly Finnish. The lead singer is Irish, though, and wrote several original songs for the band. He is called Harry Bent and is from Dublin. These tracks are from their album 'Korkleg'.

Just thought I'd let you know :)

Andy
