Can anyone tell me where 'Catters are meeting in Whitby? Is it usually in the Tap and Spile or in the Endeavour? And does anyone know why Strawhead don't seem to be appearing this year? I'm traumatised!! Ali

Tap & Spile, Endeavour, Middle Earth probably. Don't know why Strawhead arn't appearing and I'm sorry you are traumatised however I'm sure you will find compensation in the very full programme of events. See you there. John

Good idea! Geoff and I will be there, and I know Firm Friends will be, as we're in the same house! Should be good fun! The programme does look good John, but I'm a Strawhead fan of many years, and I look forward to seeing them in Whitby every year. Ali

Hi Alio,
Stawhead have been given a well earned rest this year. However Chris will be doing the usual 'Lunchtime Legends' gig with Alison, Clive & Nev at the Elsinor on Wednesday lunch time.
For those of you that don't know 'The Lunchtime Legends'. They are all from the 'Bothy' in Southport, Chris Harvey-Pollington on keyboards, Alison Younger in her alter ego as 'Candy Rell' on Bee Wop vocals, Nev Grundy vocals guitar & Clive Pownceby on drums. So for 2 hrs of non stop rock & roll, Wed lunch at the Elsinor.
A week later at Fylde, Strawhead will be doing their usual Fri night gig at the North Euston.
I'll be at Whitby dancing with the Southport Swords, i'm the slightly overweight, slightly balding, grey haired one with the beard!! Hey that's all of us!!!!
Cheers
Les (the only one not from Hull)

If anyone is still looking for accommodation, I think Whitby Holiday Cottages may not have let the flat in Bagdale WITH PARKING SPACE yet - if so, they haven't let us know. Phone 01947 603010. PLEASE! You know you want to go, you were just unsure about camping, and the weather, an' stuff. Pretty Please?

The above link is to the site of a new PEL/two in a bar action group called Action for Music. Leaflets funded by EFDSS, which can be printed off on this site, were distributed at Sidmouth, to great efect.

It would be great if the same distribution could be done by those attending Whitby this week and all other festivals...Please help!

Cheers, looking on the sunny side and hope to see some of you there.

I did Scarborough-Whitby last night, road was pretty rotten with standing water, but passable. Pickering-Whitby road was actually closed at Pickering (or I wouldn't have gone by S'boro), I am unsure whether it's back open yet.

The town this pm is v.overcast with lots of landscape flowing down the harbour. Looking out for a quick session in the Endeavour tonight perhaps.

Familiar faces are already sprouting in increasing numbers, how long before we have a folk fortnight rather than week?

Aah, the weather sounds dodgy then - you need INDOOR ACCOMMODATION! I'm not a landlady or anything, so no commercial axe to grind. What happened was this:

For years and years we have stayed at a friend's house, plus or minus dogs according to whichever bit of the family was there. Last autumn these friends moved from Whitby. Thinking how lucky I was to find somewhere for Folk Week, and not needing to take the dog (by now only one, and son was to be at home that week) I booked a flat last October and paid up at the end of June.

Lo and behold, not two weeks later I acquired a puppy, whom you all will have chance to meet, but this meant a change of plan as I don't want to put him in kennels at such a crucial time in his socialisation (thinking in the long run he'll do better in the Tap and Spile) Ergo, plea to cottage people and - miracle of miracles, they had a place which would accept pets.

SO here I am now, with TWO properties paid for and only needing the one. And knowing how people hold onto flats, cottages etc for dear life in Folk Week, it seems greedy not to do all I can to alert everyone to this fact. Obviously it'll make my spending money as well if the unwanted accommodation is re-let. So please consider it. (Details earlier in thread)

Here's to Whitby whatever the weather!

Oh Dorrie you'd be surprised!!! But let's not be pessamistic - it will of course be brilliant sunshine all day everyday and who cares anyway its never rained in the Tap and Spile yet!
BTW anyone got a programme yet. We were wondering what we could pack the smalls off to during the day - preferably not at the other end of Whitby. The playgroup used to be in the Seaman's mission hall but moved a couple of years ago to West Cliff school and I can't see us getting the twins up there for 9.30! Maddie is undecided between the youth orchestra and Children in performance but I think they clash.

this sounds like great fun. I was just reading a novel where Whitby is mentioned (A.S. Byatt's Possession) as a seaside town famous for its jet jewelry and decorations; is this true?

This weekend and next is also a performance at the Rollrights stone circle in Oxfordshire; I wish I could come over for both these things! But my travels are over while I stay home and try to make some money and then venture out again.

I will be in England again in October, 14th to 21st and would love to find out if there are any musical events going on; I always seem to miss them! I am giving a paper at the Buffy the Vampire Slayer conference in Norwich the 19th-20th, and will probably be in Glastonbury earlier in the week. Might also be able to finally make it Cecil Sharp house in London with Micca on the Tuesday!

have a great time everyone!

Peg: Yes Whitby still sells a fair bit of jet, which is found locally. The industry isn't anything like it was in Victorian times though.

A film of Posession was made about 2 yrs ago, some of it on location in Whitby (spot the Duke of York and at least 1 catter, but both well disguised). I'm unsure if it has had a UK release yet.

The flow of debris down the harbour is slackening, and it's a bit fairer weather now, fingers crossed for next weekend onwards.

Must close now and get ready for the Tap.

the film version of Possession opens in Boston next Friday. I am very much looking forward to it (rereading the novel for that occasion). Gwyneth Paltrow, Jeremy Northam and Jennifer Ehle star in it; Tom Hollander was also meant to be in it, but was replaced by another actor who plays the young hero as an American scholar visiting London (a change from the original where they are all British; this change makes no sense and kind of annoys me, actually; I mean, Gwyneth can do it convincingly, was it just a question of not finding the right actor? The American characters in the novel stand out because they are American...this change makes things seem odd)

anyway forgive the thread creep but those of you who like Whitby may indeed want to see this film!

"I'm the slightly overweight, slightly balding, grey haired one with the beard!!" Yeah, that covers me as well. Sort of Father Christmas Convention.

I should be on the bus from Victoria that gets in around 8.30. And then camping, good grief. Indoor camping is what you really need in this sort of climate.

Anyway, God willing, see you around.

Indoor amping is a great idea but landlords really object when you try to park the caravan in their living rooms. I was at whitby the year of the great campsite wash out and it was great the way people rallied around and made space available including one church opening its doors great stuff. Hopfully the weather will hold.

A debate from the Synod of Whitby (664AD)

In 664AD King Oswy of Northumbria summoned a synod of the church at the monastery of Streanaeshalch (Whitby) to resolve the disputes between the adherents of the Celtic and Roman Churches. In itself this was a very civilised procedure as the usual method of settling religious controversies then, as now, was to kill those who differed in any way.
At the heart of the matter was the difference in the methods of calculating the date of Easter, and King Oswy may have had good domestic reasons for wanting a resolution of this dispute. He followed the customs of the Celtic Church, while his wife, Queen Eanfled observed the Roman rites, so that during her Lent while she was fasting and practising abstinence, the King would be trying to celebrate his Easter, or vice versa, which must have made marital relations difficult.
At any rate the Roman Church won the argument in this as in most other matters, but recent research has shed some light on some of the lesser matters discussed at the Synod which may be of interest here.
It seems that Caedmon, a brother at the monastery, and a gifted singer of religious poems had complained that his singing was often disturbed by unruly Irish monks. They apparently would interrupt his songs by banging sticks on a stretched piece of dried goatskin, or by squeezing an inflated pig's bladder so that, as Bede relates; "when he saw the harp coming his way, he would get up from the table and go home."
This occasioned a lively debate about the roles of singers and players in the church. Some felt that the human voice alone should be raised in praise of the Lord, and that the use of accompaniment was a vulgar and unseemly distraction. Moreover the tunes played by the musicians were inspired by the Evil One, and incited people to lewd and lascivious conduct such as occurred at the pagan country dances.
For the musicians it was argued that the harmonies of stringed and blown instruments could only please the Lord, and that as for the use of popular tunes, these, if used in praise of the Lord, could only help lead people to God. For as much as the common folk were familiar with the old airs and melodies so they would feel at home when these same strains were used to celebrate Our Lord.
Wilfrid, the leader of the Roman delegation, eventually promulgated an historic compromise. Appealing to the precedent of King David who had both played on his harp and sang his psalms, he allowed that musicians should be allowed to play in accompanying the singers within the confines of the church, but that outside each should be permitted to congregate separately so that " angelic voices should not be distracted by the wheezing and rattling of instruments, nor the playing of heavenly music be be interrupted by the coughing and spluttering of discordant voices."
However the beaters of drums were banned until such time as they learned to play quietly, and rhythmically.

Just restablished internet connection after it being down for a few days all over this part of the country. Meantime the weather keeps dodgy, and a roof rather than in a tent seems an attractive idea.

I rang the number Wyrd Sister gave for Whitby Holiday Cottages - however since Wyrd Sister presumably isn't the name on the booking I'm not sure we identufied which flat it was. The one they thought it was is £335, and that's over my budget, since it's just me this trip.

Any suggestions?

We're also staying in a house owned by Whitby Holiday Cottages. They do have quite a few small cottages that are much cheaper, although I would think that most of them would have been booked by now. We booked ours at the end of the festival last year. Perhaps the company would put you in touch with some other properties? Good luck!

McGrath

If you're on your own, it sounds as though B&B would be better than a cottage.

You can find a list by price on www.whitby-hoteliers.fsnet.co.uk/

Hopefully it won't be as crowded as last year because it doesn't overlap with the regatta, especially if the weather's dodgy. And there may be vacancies after the weekend if you could stand camping for a couple of nights...

Harpmaker, you just need to know where to go. Fuscoes in Baxtergate (think it actually has another name, bue everyone calls it Fuscoe's.) Anyway it's the one at the back of Boyes. My favourite is East Side Fisheries down past Middle Earth. First In Last Out chippie is good. Magpie is great to eat in, if you can get in, and Trenchers is good (ditto). But avoid the places down on Pier Avenue or the Battery - of course they're just out for your money, this is a tourist town. Duke of York has good food of all sorts, but expect to wait. the Indian in the station has a good rep. Pizza house opposite the co-op has good stuff, & there's a new Chinese somewhere. Then there's Shepherd's Purse, the new place opposite the bus station (forgotten its name!) - I could go on but...

Unfortunately, I had to leave early too. But it was a very enjoyable festival, with some smashing shanty singing at the Endeavour with Jim Mageean (an organised part of the programme) and some bl**dy brilliant singing at the Tap & Spile run by Jude Knight (a fringe event with a clock which seemed to stop at about 10.55 pm every night). I even went to some English concertina workshops and had a marvellous seafood meal at the Magpie Cafe.

I KNOW the festival is still going strong but I'm now looking forward to Bridgnorth FF on Friday, after a gig at a great Cotswold pub tomorrow night.

Linda - not strangely depressed at all. Coming back from Whitby, like coming back from Sidmouth, is like withdrawing from a magical trip. Although if, like me, you lost your voice singing on day 1 it's a bit of a curate's egg all round.

Joe Offer was definitely at Whitby - I saw him at the Albion club yesterday at the Mudcat workshop with Dick and Susan before I dashed off to sing at Jim Mageean's singaround (as you would, if your voice had just come back on your last day at Whitby).

Selby and family,

Thankyou all for your company - it made our week. Hope Birthday Bunny was waiting for you when you got home. Definitely looking into the possibility of meeting up at Otley. If so, bring your clothes pegs for your kilts and we'll bring the musical director of the WBKE! Tom and Joe: enjoyed your playing in the Plough on Thursday night.

love,

Jay

Paul from Hull,

Did everyone get off the Community College campsite without difficulty, or were there problems for you and John with the mud? Also, did you get a lift?

See you again sometime,

Chris
