From: RichM

To honor the current brouhaha about taboo topics in the Mudcat forum, I offer my initial list of 7 words you can't say on Mudcat (with a wink and a nod to George Carlin):

number 7: ***
number 6: *****
number 5: ********* number 4: **** number 3: **** number 2: *********** And the all time first place winner,
Number One: ****!

Since when CAN'T you say certain words on Mudcat?

Certainly, some people wish that you do not,

Others delete one or two letters from words (as if sh*t is so much better and anyone old enough to use a computer doesn't understand it).

If it's a particularly brutal tirade, someone my censor it.

The big question is why are people offended by certain words - especially if those words are not being used to insult someone or some thing.

And of course, heaven forbid if someone asks us what BS stands for...

In the case of some words it is hardly possible for them to be used without knowing that they are going to insult and offend other people. That means that there is an intention to do this.

True, there are contexts within which any word can be used in a way that is not offensive, but outside those contexts, using them is a breach of fellowship and an act of gross discourtesy. Not funny. Cheap and mean and nasty.

Claymore - you're a mine of dirty words!

True, some words are just about only used in a insulting way, but many words can be used that way. Instead of worryng about words, we should worry about attacks and insults.

Acctually, we shouldn't. I generally ignore attacks and insults unless I believe that the individual who is attacking me misunderstood a comment I made.

Sanctimonious Liberal Twit? No I can't see any problem there. Political insults are surely privileged.

I suppose if you called someone a Tory they might have grounds for feeling insulted, but not if you meant it as a description of their political opinions, rather than the way they looked and behaved in company.

"There were these three fellas in a bar, and one was a Tory, and one was Labour and one was a Liberal..."Actually it might work out quite well, making the politicist jokes.

Wjho was it bused to go in for telling the Thick-Paddy jokes, but with the target changed to "Sun Readers"? (TThe Sun being a comic that passes for a newspaper in England, with a circulation of millions.

As one who is banished from MC membership - and as one who has had the most threads deleated (under the name below or other personAfications....let's try these in your headers.....

1. We can ask, who is from the UK or South American, who is pagan or Christian....but don't EVER let a thread ask, Who is JEWISH????

2. Requests for German songs such as Horst Wessel are reluctantly answered....but let a reference to HITLER appear (except in such WWII desparaging songs such as "We Will Hang Old Hitler From the Very Highest Bough")....and they are deleted.

3. The WICCAN THREADS were a blight until they the saw the light and retracted back into the darkness of the ANNEX...which is now personae non grata.

4. Don't post information regarding C-O-O-K-I-E-S and how to F-Up the system...that will be deleted too.

5..Attack anything, anyone you want...but DON"T attack max or his toadies.

6. Agreed, Shatner has run the same course as the Wicans and the offending parties have been notified to be on "alert."

7. And the seventh taboo....I will leave to you....but it is bigger than ALL The Rest

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

I guess I missed something. Is Wicca not to be discussed?

I've been around for 4 years and don't talk very often specifically about my religions (plural intended) but I do mention them in passing occasionally. I am both Wiccan and Unitarian Universalist.

Not that I'm encouraging Gargoyle to speak, but...

Your point about "Jewish" references is quite apt, Gargoyle...sorta like "You don't touch me, I'm part of the Union" kind of thing, only more so.

As for Shatner, I have never been advised by anyone in any position of authority here that I cannot post stuff about him, but I decided to be a bit more circumspect in doing so after some idiot started refreshing every past Shatner thread in existence any time his name came up in a thread title, thus hogging the whole daily page with old Shatner threads. This got tiresome, even for me. Too much of even so rare and wondrous a delicacy as Shatner call make for a jaded palate none too soon. Look what overexposure did to Springsteen after 1985...

I still wonder who said idiot is, and I think it might just be someone who hated the very mention of Shatner, and therefore decided to kill it by overexposure. If so, we are dealing with a clever and totally unscrupulous person...but an idiot in any case.

So Big Bill now shows up in subtler and less obvious ways.

Now tell me, why were you "banished" from Mudcat? I thought you left of your own accord. And when did you leave?

Forbidden words? It's all in the context and up to 70% of that is normally non-lexicographical in speech and on net forums (or should that be fora) we have to be aware of the loss of context not to mention the common language we don't share.
My vote goes to awareness as a result. But I reserve the right to mock PC on my PC.

Now, listen, people..."Belgium" is indeed a horrific word...

But there is a worse one. Are you ready?

*** GUELPH ***

It rhymes with elf. It's a city in southern Ontario, Canada. There are some catchy songs about the place, like:

"Arriverderci, Guelph"

"I Left My Heart In...Guelph"

And my favourite.. "Guelph, Guelph" (Sinatra really should have recorded that one. It would have been a huge hit.)

Little Hawk, I'm not sure it was one person refreshing all the Shatner threads.  I think I may have posted to one of them ("who's sexier...") months after its next to last post, but I had nothing to do with refreshing others.  Maybe it was several different people intrigued by one or another of the Shatner threads?

Now, "Guelph," that's a different matter.  (I lived for a while on Via Guelfa in Firenze, Italia, and I looked up the word in my little Italian-English dictionary.  It said "n., F., 'guelph.' !)  Seriously, I considered (seriously) teaching at the Univ. of Guelph at one time.)  [How about, "Don't Cry For Me, Guelph!"?]

Back to the point:

I will continue to try to ascertain why Shatner is titillating, but if it is a bastardization of the folk process, I will go back to Norfolk, where I will study concoctions made with Shiitake mushrooms and pistachio nuts.

The Guelphs were an Italian family, maybe from FLorence? They were kinda Medici wannabes. My pretentious grandmother liked to assert that her family name (Phelps) came from Guelph. Based on no evidence at all, just her own delusions of aristocracy.

If there are words that should be forbidden, shouldn't they just be words that would be hurtful? It seems to me it would be smarter and more useful to forbid people NOT to use certain words. Like, no one should be "allowed" to go through a week without saying, "I love you" or "how are you doing, really?" or "I'm so glad to see you" or "let's have some TV-free time -- no TV for the next three hours" or "Come on over".

Right, well you CAN say the word cunt. Unless you are me, in which case Joe Offer will censor your post for saying that you can say cunt. The word cunt can be found in many songs in the DT, as Wincing Devil proved to us with the search link he provided, conveniently, in the For Ladies Only thread.

So, you fellas don't mind ME being censored, right? You want Joe Offer to censor my posts, because I'm a thorn in the side of Mudcat. I'm a pain in the ass. I'm a troll. I'm an easy one to censor because no one will stick up for freedom of speech here. That ain't the thang here at all. The censorship going on now is censorship of my posts, not because I'm a troll, or a pain in the ass, but because what I say hits a bit too close to the bone. So, it becomes necessary to censor the debate, the challenges to the status quo, etc.

Like I said, you guys don't give a shit about the censorship getting out of hand here at Mudcat. All you give a shit about is whether YOU get censored. Whether YOU can say whatever the hell you want. You know well enough not to say anything critical about Mudcat, because that IS what is getting censored here. You also know just where the line is for your sexual content posts and threads. Yup, you guys have it really good. You can keep up with the boys will be boys antics with impunity, because the boys who run Mudcat are on your side.

You win. In Mudcat, you will always win. Because it is the men who have the power and the throne who decide it all for us anyway. And they've decided that you are free to have shaved pussy threads, and lots of songs with words like cunt in them. What a proud day it is for men here in Mudcat, the manly folk music forum.

If you think this place is for men only, start your own website! Quit telling someone else how to run their place. How would you like it if I went to a party in your home and insisted you should allow only certain topics of conversation?

For Goodness sake, why can't people get it through their thick heads that Mudcat is not run by us, is not owned by us and, in many respects, not even funded by us? Because of that, the owners HAVE THE RIGHT to censor anything they want.

Freedom of the press is an absolute right to only those that own a press.

So start your own site - call it the "Anti-Mudcat Women Friendly Music Discussion Site" or whatever. Then when I go on your site and say that your stupid, you can censor me and ban me and feel superior!

yeesh.

Deda, "guelfa" is also a common noun in Italian, too, not just a family name. The problem with my little dictionary was that the so-called English word it gave as a translation ("guelf" -- I think-- not "guelph") was not a word I'd ever heard of. I kinda thought maybe they meant "gulf."

As for "forbidden words" at Mudcat, I can't think of any words I've never seen in the forum or DT -- except, come to think of it, up to now, the word "guelf."

"Don't cry for me, Guelph"

What a splendid idea! Thanks for that one, Genie... It will be ringing in my head tonight, I'm sure.

There's also "Guelph, City of my Dreams" (based on the original song about Vienna). Guelph is actually a nice town, with a pretty good acoustic music scene, and some great players in the surrouding area. I was last there a couple of years ago.

GUEST - Whoever you are, I wish to tell you that I despise the words c*nt and p#ssy (except in the latter case, when referring to a cat, in which case it's "pussycat") and I do not use them. Not in this forum nor off it. That's my way of dealing with it. As for people who do use them, well....shrug...there will always be people who do things I might consider stupid and tasteless, but I would be doing myself no favour having a fit over it all the time, would I? Would it change them? I think not. I just avoid doing those things myself.

Similarly, I avoid posting to threads which I consider to be a waste of my time and good nature. I suggest you do the same.
