Subject: Need title of song
From: GUEST,Cookie

Can someone help me find the title and/or artist of this song? This is the request I got.

I have a fragment of a song stuck in my head, I believe it is from the 50's but I have no idea of who sang it or what the title is. What I remember is......."there she was drinking with one-eyed Pete. I shot at her twice, before the smoke cleared, I looked around she done disappeared" Sound familiar???

Thanks Cookie

Actually, Cookie, I went to Google and typed one eyed Pete in Parentheses so it would only return exact matches. There were about 20 pages of which I only got through 3 or 4. You might start there.

Thanks I did go to google. That is the first thing I use. I'm thinking that the song isn't really about one-eyed Pete but the girl. I don't give up easy so back to the drawing board.

Using Google and the search argument "one-eyed pete" cleared disappeared, you get only one result. It's the entire text of a book called "The Motor Boys Overland; or A Long Trip For Fun and Fortune" by Clarence Young, 1906. I don't think it's what you want.

Cookie, are there any of those words (in the search argument) that you're uncertain of?

If not, it seems unlikely that the lyrics you want are on the Internet -- that part of it that Google indexes, anyway -- and if Google can't find it, probably no search engine can.

Subject: Lyr Add: PISTOL PACKING MAMA

It's a real long shot -- but -- the text given is vaguely similar to variant verses (I think) I've heard to Pistol Packin' Mama.

The only handy recording I have, a rendition by Al Dexter on As Good As It Gets: Western Swing (Disky Communications DO 247362) doesn't have the variants I remember, but note the third verse of the lyric posted at:

PISTOL PACKING MAMA

8 -8 7 -6 6 7 7 7
Drinking beer in a cabaret

-6 7 7 -7 -6 6
and was I having fun

6 -7 -8 -8 6 -7 -8 -8
Until one night she caught me right

6 6 6 -6 -7 7
and now I'm on the run.

8 8 -8 7 -6 7 7
Oh! Lay that pistol down, Babe.

7 7 -7 -6 6
Lay that pistol down!

-7 -8 -8 -8 -7 6
Pistol packing mama,
6 6 -6 -7 7
lay that pistol down.

She kicked out my windshield, she hit me over the head.
She cussed and cried and said I'd lied and
wished that I was dead.

Lay that pistol down, Babe...etc.

Drinking beer in a cabaret and dancing with a blonde.
Until one night she shot out the lights-
-bang, that blonde was gone.

Lay that pistol down, Babe...etc.

I'll see you ev'ry night, Bab, I'll wow you every day.
I'll be your reg'lar daddy if you'll put that gun away.

Lay that pistol down....etc.

This is one that's had some rough treatment - with a lot of variations, but I wouldn't know how to look for a specific one. The cited text might have been in the "pisto packin' papa" variant...(?)

John

I know the song and who sang it. It was called "I miss my old man" by the Furey Brothers. I am just looking for the verses for my husband, who wanted it for his fathers funeral last week, but we could not find it. He would still like to have it.

Karen, I think the song YOU'RE looking for is THE OLD MAN, by Phil Coulter, which is in the DT, unattributed. But it doesn't have anything to do with the song COOKIE is looking for. Did you post your message to the wrong thread, maybe?
