I'm looking for the lyrics to a song that seems to be partially known (along with the tune) by everyone I seem to talk to but nobody seems to know much about it or the exact words.

The song or the refrain starts with:

Nobody loves me. Everbody hates me. (Think or Guess) I'm gonna eat some worms.

Any ideas where and who it comes from and where the lyrics can be found.?

Bob

Hi, Bob - I searched the database under "worms" and didn't find the song, although far be it from me to doubt Dick....
You could do a forum search under "eat some worms," and you'd find this, and, even better, this.
....but now I gotta search the database again and see if Greenhaus is telling the truth.....

I have a vague recollection of Jerry Lewis SAYING "Nobody loves me, everybody hates me. I'm going to go eat worms" in one of those Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis films. I don't know if he cribbed it from the song, or if somebody expanded those words into a song (or if I am all wet and he didn't say it.)

Yup. Just as I thought. The version Greenhaus pointed to is apocryphal. If you want the "gospel truth" version, follow the "this and this" links I posted above. Then we have to talk Greenhaus into including the true version in the database....

Thanks all!!!

Still a cloud of mystery about eating worms. I did find a verson of the song (with download midi file) at the museum of science of minnesota (there's a whole thing on WORMS) but no author/composer even though some of the other (yes other) worm songs had all.

I must appologize as well to Bob (who has first dibs on using the name Bob on this list). I am officially RP but force of habit led me to err.

Thanks again and would still appreciate variations and authors name and composer.

This isn't the way I learned the song, either. The tune isn't quite right, and neither are the words. But it's pretty good. I think I like Alice's version better.
Hey, RP, where did you find that MIDI? I'd like to see if it's closer to my version.

GUESS I'LL EAT SOME WORMS
(songwriter unknown)
(transcribed from the "Prairie Home Companion Folk Song Book")

Nobody loves me, everybody hates me
Guess I'll eat some worms
Long slim slimy ones, short fat juicy ones
Itsy bitsy fuzzy wuzzy worms

First you cut the heads off, then you suck the guts out
Oh, how they wiggle and squirm
Long slim slimy ones, short fat juicy ones
Itsy bitsy fuzzy wuzzy worms

Wiggle goes the first one, goosh goes the second one,
Sure don't wanna eat these worms
Long slim slimy ones, short fat juicy ones
Itsy bitsy fuzzy wuzzy worms

Down goes the first one, down goes the second one,
Sure hate the taste of worms
Long slim slimy ones, short fat juicy ones
Itsy bitsy fuzzy wuzzy worms

Nobody hates me, everybody likes me,
Never shoulda eaten those worms
Long slim slimy ones, short fat juicy ones
Itsy bitsy fuzzy wuzzy worms

Up comes the first one, up comes the second one,
Oh, how they wiggle and squirm
Long slim slimy ones, short fat juicy ones
Itsy bitsy fuzzy wuzzy worms

This was a piano song that I learned by ear when I was small (early 60's). It used mostly black keys. A few years later my best friend's mother taught us these words to sing along. Maybe it is closer to what others remember.

Nobody likes me, everybody hates me
Guess I'll go eat worms.
Big fat juicy one.
Little tiny slimy (?) ones.
Eat 'em while they wiggle and they squirm.

First you bite the heads off
Then you suck the juice out
Throw the skins away.
Up comes the first one
Up comes the second one
Third ones down to stay!

(Spoken like a holler)
"Come up, third one!"
"I'm coming!"
Hasten, Jason! Get a basin!
Erp! Slop! Get a mop!

Piano notes below
(F# CHORD) F# F D# C#
F# F D# C#
F# F F# G G# (B7 CHORD AS G# PLAYS)
G# F D# C#
G# F D# C#
G# G G# A# F# (F# CHORD AS F# PLAYS)

Chords are played alternately on right hand in an oom-pah style.

There is a similar tune played with only black keys. Does anyone recall the name of it? How about the song when you roll your knuckles across the three black keys? Name?

Hi,

I seem to remember the tune being called "In the woods" or "Into the woods", it was all on the black notes and back then was my alternative tune to "Chopsticks."

It is pretty like "Think I'll go and eat worms."

Here's another verse we used to do with the Brownies.

You bite off the heads and suck out the juice, Throw the reast away, Nobody knows how I survive on a hundred worms a day.

The long thin slimy ones, slip down easily, The short fat fuzzy ones don't, The short fat fuzzy ones stick in your teeth, And the juice goes (slurping noise) down your throat.

gatyam gal, could the black-keys song you're thinking of be "Down at Papa Joe's"?
Kicky, keep looking for that tune, if you would. I'm just not satisfied with the one from the Prairie Home Companion Folk Song Book, which, by the way, has been renamed Joe's Got a Head Like a Ping-Pong Ball. Maybe THAT's why I don't like the version in that book.

It goes back a ways. My mother used to use a line from the song when I was a kid, something about "I'll go sit in the yard and eat worms." Of course, she may have embellished it for us, since she used only one line. I'd say her source was from back in the 1940's or 50's.

The version I learned as a kid:

Nobody loves me, everybody hates me
Think I'll go eat worms
Big ones, little ones, fat ones, skinny ones
Think I'll go eat worms

First one went down easy
Second one was kinda greasy
Third one....uurrp
Think I'll go eat worms

I grew up in London (UK), Kansas and Connecticut (USA) with British and American parents, and I have NO idea where or from whom I learned this song. Most likely on the playground in Connecticut in the early 1960's.

Long before I heard the "Nobody loves me..." rhyme, we used to have a record for our wind-up Victrola. One of the early old-timey groups- can't recall which, sang:

O they're always, always a-pickin on me,
They never, never let me be;
I'm so lonely, awful sad-
Been a long time since I've been glad.
Well I'll tell yi what I'll do by and by,
I'll eat some worms and then I'll die-
N'when I'm gone I bet they'll be
Doggone sorry that they picked on me!

(Note-There was another verse or two, and a slightly different refrain):

Well I'll tell yi what I'll do, it ain't no joke,
I'll eat some worms and then I'll croak-
N'when I'm gone,yi know they'll be
Doggone sorry that they picked on me!

I think you folks must have a diiferent tune for this one than I remember because "Think I'll go eat worms" or "Guess I'll eat some worms" doesn't scan for the second line of the melody I know for it.

Maybe this version of line 2 scans the way you hear the tune -- per my mother, circa 1955:

NObody loves me, everybody hates me
I'm goin' out and eat worms
Big fat juicy ones, little bitty skinny ones
and dirty ones full of germs...

Nope, not that one either, PG. The second line of the tune I know for it has a melody line very similar to the second line from the theme of the old Dick Van Dyke Show. The rest of the tune isn't like that though, but that's the closest approximation that occurs to me.

Obfuscated enough for ya?

Well the version that I have (learnt in the Boy Scouts, probably from the Girl Guides - I learnt a lot from the Girl Guides!)

Nobody likes me, everybody hates me
I think I'll go and eat worms
Long ones, short ones, fat ones, skiny ones
Worms that wriggle and squirm

Bite their heads off, suck their guts out
Throw their skins away
Nobody knows how much I thrive on
Worms three times a day

Long thin skinny ones slide down easily
Short fat furry ones stick
Short fat furry ones stick in your gizzard
And the blood goes (shlck shlck shick)(shlck = a disgusting slurping noise)

http://www.bussongs.com/songs/nobody_likes_me_worms.php

Nobody likes me, everybody hates me,
Guess I'll go eat worms,
Long, thin, slimy ones; Short, fat, juicy ones,
Itsy, bitsy, fuzzy wuzzy worms.

Down goes the first one, down goes the second one,
Oh how they wiggle and squirm.
Up comes the first one, up comes the second one,
Oh how they wiggle and squirm.

Just like Gopher Guts, there are many versions of this song.
Some of the versions we have heard of are:

Alternate Version 1:
Nobody likes me, everybody hates me,
think I'll go eat worms...
big fat juicy ones, little slimy skinny ones,
hope they don't have germs!

Alternate Version 2:
Nobody loves me, everybody hates me
Think I'll go and eat worms
Long ones, short ones, fat ones, thin ones
See how they wriggle and squirm

I bite off the heads, and suck out the juice
And throw the skins away
Nobody knows how fat I grow
On worms three times a day
Ohh...nobody loves me.

Alternate Version 3:
Nobody likes me, everybody hates me,
Think I'll go eat worms.
Big fat juicy ones, Eensie weensy squeensy ones,
See how they wiggle and squirm.

Chomp off their heads and squeeze out the juice
And throw their tails away
Nobody knows how I survive
On worms three times a day.

Alternate Version 4:
Nobody likes me, everybody hates me
I'm goin' down the garden to eat worms
Long thin slimy ones, short fat fuzzy ones
Ooey gooey, ooey gooey worms

Long thin slimy ones slip down easily
Short fat fuzzy ones don't
Short fat fuzzy ones stick to your teeth
And the juice goes slurpin' (slurping noise) down your throat

My version is still somewhat different then any of those. I forget some words or lines though. I found it once a few years ago, but lost it again and can't find it now. but here goes close as I can get...
Nobody loves me, everybody hates me,
guess i'll eat some worms
fat ones, skinny ones,
let the little ones squirm
bite their heads off, suck their guts out
throw the skins away
Nobody loves me, everybody hates me
guess ill eat some worms
oops, forgot my spoon

Seems like there is suppose to be a few more lines before the last one though. just can't remember. ohwell, just thought I'd throw my version on. Hope it helped someone anyway.

Apparently my mum knew this version when she was at school. Momentarily revived when I was at school, but not much further than the above.

I'm from London, UK BTW - so don't know if this has any bearing at all.

Throw the skins away.
Nobody loves me, everybody hates me

I recall Tom Paley singing this, and he had it:

Nobody loves me,
Everybody hates me,
I'm gonna go out and eat worms.
Big ones, small ones,
Fat ones, squishy ones,
I'm gonna go out and eat worms.
Bite off their heads,
Bite off their tails,
Suck all the custard out.

He says that picturing worms as "animated eclairs" was a new way to see them.

Around the time of the First World War there used to be a popular picture (certainly postcard, possibly poster as well) of a little boy sitting on a step looking fed up. The caption was: Nobody loves me. I'm going into the garden to eat worms. Testerday I ate three smooth ones and a hairy one.

Never wrote it down or had a recording so it really is just as I remember it

Nobody likes me everybody hates me
I'm going down the garden to eat worms
Long thin slimy ones slip down easily
Short fat fuzzy ones stick
Short fat fuzzy ones stick in your teeth
And the juice goes slurpppppppp
Bite of their heads and suck out the juice
And throw the skins away
nobody knows how I survive
On a hundred worms a day
Yum yum

They Always Pick On Me
Music by Harry Von Tilzer
Words by Stanley Murphy
Published 1911 by Harry Von Tilzer Music Pub. Co.

[Verse 1]
When I was born my Pa and ma
They looked at me and said oh pshaw,
The doctor said It's a girl I think
And Pa went out and got a drink,

Then Ma said I looked just like Pa
and Pa said I took after Ma,
Aunt Jane said I looked like a quince,
And I've been a step child ever since.

[Chorus]
They always, always pick on me
They never, never let me be
I'm so very lonesome, awfully sad
It's a long time since I've been glad,

But,I know what I'll do bye and bye,
I'll eat some worms and then I'll die,
And when I'm gone you wait and see,
They'll all be sorry that they picked on me.

[Verse 2]
My Ma put me to bed and said
The Angels watched me in the bed,
They wouldn't let things frighten me,
Then the Angels started biting me;

When my Ma sends me to the store,
I lose the change then she gets sore,
I lost my cat and my bow-wow,
I think I'm losing something now.

[Repeat Chorus]

[Verse 3]
One morning just at four oclock
Somebody tried to pick our lock
I knew t'was papa sure as sin
And opened the door and let him in,

My Ma said what time is it Pa,
It's twelve oclock my Pa told Ma,
Just then the Cuckoo Cuckooed four
and Pa made me Cuckoo eight times more.

Well The One I Learnt Was:

Nobody Likes Me, Everybody Hates Me
Lets Go And Eat Some Worms
Short Fat Juicy Ones
Long Thin Slimy Ones
Watch How The Little Ones Squirm

Rip Their Heads Off
(Sllurrppp) All The Juice Out
Throw The Empty Skins Away
Nobody Likes Me, Everybody Hates Me
Lets Go And Eat Some Worms Today

(Sllurrppp)=Slurping Noise xD

It's one of the few poems I memorized as I kid.

Nobody likes me,
Everybody hates me,
I'm gonna eat some worms

Big fat fuzzy ones
Long slim slimy ones
Ooey gooey, ooey gooey worms

The long slim slimy ones slip down easy
The big fat fuzzy ones stick
The big fat fuzzy ones stick to your teeth
And the juice goes squish squish squish

Hope that's the one

With some distaste, but in the interest of scholarship ..... I'm surprised not to have seen anything quite like the version that was ('60s-'70s) and perhaps still is well-known among children in Ontario:

Nobody likes me, everybody hates me,
Going to the garden to eat worms;
Long, thin, slimy ones,
Short, fat, greasy ones,
Itsy-bitsy, fuzzy-wuzzy worms.

The first one was easy,
The second one was greasy,
The third one got stuck in my throat: (spoken) choke, choke!

(To the tune of My Bonny) My stomach is in a commotion,
I want to lean over the rail;
I don't want to dirty the ocean,
So somebody bring me a pail.

Come up, come up,
Come up my stomach, come up, come up;
Come up, come up,
Oh, come my stomach, come up.

(To the tune of Old Black Joe) I'm coming,
I'm coming,
For my head is bending low;
I can hear those gentle voices calling:

(Spoken) Hasten, Jason, bring the basin -
Oops! Slop! Bring the mop!
Alas, alack, it's all in vain:
The dog has licked it up again.

Pretty much how we sang it in Chicago in the Fifties.
In the further interests of scholarship...

I'd worry more about the worms eating you.

I don't remember singing this but as I recall it went:

Nobody likes me, everybody hates me,
Guess I'll go eat worms.
Big fat juicy one, little bitty skinny ones
While they squiggle and squirm.

Bite their heads off
Suck their guts out
Throw the skins away
I don't know how birds can eat them
Three times a day.

Shouldn't there be a line in this song that just goes "Urrr, urrr, urrr, urrr"?
