Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Kitty From: Rog Peek Date: 12 Apr 07 - 01:59 PM As I understand it this tells of a young rebel who is having to leave Ireland and his love to escape imprisonment by the English. He would hardly then be going 'ashore' as described in line four verse two. I think you will find that it should be 'a stor' which in gaelic translates to 'my love'. Certainly makes more sense. |

Subject: RE: Origins/Add: Kitty From: Shaneo Date: 12 Apr 07 - 05:25 PM I have only ever heard The Pogues sing this , I recall Shane MacGowan say he learned it from his mother |
Subject: RE: Origins/Add: Kitty From: Rog Peek Date: 13 Apr 07 - 05:33 AM There is a suggestion on www.poguetry.com/roses.htm that Kitty might be the Kathleen Mavourneen of 'Kathleen Mavouneen - A Memory of The Great Rebellion' by Randal McDonnel. |
