Wow...Really. These guys really know how to romance a tune. We couldn't stay long (sick kid out late=bad), but we came for the first set. We all had a great time, even the kid. My 10 year daughter, who normally complains when I am on the computer said "Wow, Mom...if being at the Mudcat means you get to meet all these cool people, then that's cool with me". The music was sublime, earthy and so very folk. Greg's one funny guy as well. I haven't stopped smiling yet.

But the very best part was meeting them. Greg and Kate are some of the most gracious people you could hope meet. What a pleasure.

It was great to meet other local 'Catters as well. But, alas, names are already starting to escape me. I know I met Rita, who's handle I am not remembering. And Fortunato, who's real name I am not remembering.

Sorry to one and all whose names are not coming to mind. Forgive me, there are times I don't even remember my own.

I am now the proud owner of 2 of their CD's. Thank you again, Greg...it was truly a pleasure!!

Hi, Celtic, this is Rita. Well this was certainly a fine evening!

Greg has a great sense of humor and has the knack of making everyone in the room feel he's someone they would like to know. He stood up, introduced himself and Kate, and -- the whole room got quiet. You can only appreciate this if you've ever tried to sing in the Royal Mile. :-)

It was wonderful music. Very high energy and so much fun. Kate is a fiddler and singer, Greg a guitarist and singer, and their music covers old timey, Cajun, blues, and of course the British Isles. I could look around the room while they were playing and see nothing but happy smiling faces, it was great. People were just beaming.

The pub owners let us jam for a while after the more formal performance, too. A treat for me was, singing "Keep Your Feet Still, Geordie, Hinnie," with Greg next to me playing guitar and joining in loud and strong on the chorus. And Chance and Suzette got everyone going on some old time and Carter Family songs. Lots of other good stuff too. But there's the drive to Bobert's tomorrow, so we couldn't stay until the wee hours....

Well I agree with Celtic, I'm grateful to Mudcat for providing a way to meet so many people and have so many good times.

It was big fun at the 'Mile last night. Laughter and singing and dancing. Les Bonton Roulez. Greg and Kate put on a grand show. Nicely paced and varied, the show sprinkled Greg's dry humor and Kate's cajun fiddle tunes in amongst traditional UK and American tunes and songs. Susette and I had the pleasure of playing a few tunes with them and sining with Mudcatters and some friends who came out for the show.

As Celtic Soul's daughter said, we meet wonderful people through the Mudcat and here were two of the best.

By the way Celtic Soul's daughter is bright and beautiful as well as perceptive. If you're near the DC area you can catch Celtic Soul and her husband playing at the Renaissance Fair in Maryland, they'll be in the White Hart Pub.

And if you're across the pond go and see The Boat Band, great stuff. aaaaaaaaaaaEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! cheers, Chance

Thanks, Chance! I have to agree about my kid (but then, I am her Mom).

A small correction. You can see me and my group at the White Hart, but if you're looking for my honey, you'll have to go see him over at The Globe stage. He may sing a bit, but only for the purpose of comedy. His show is improv.

Which was high compliment to Greg last night, as he had my honey in stitches most of the evening. :D

Well, back now from the BBQ at Bobert's. Because of the short notice only a few people could get there but Oh What You Missed! -- I'm trying to convince Bobert that he doesn't need overseas visitors to have an excuse for a Mudcat party. What a beautiful place.

Bobert and wife Eve have made their mountain home into an extraordinary place, from the graceful gardens to the bird feeders to the double-decker London bus that Bobert converted to a 2 story guest house.

The food was scrumptious. Bobert's friend Fred brought a huge salmon fillet as his potluck contribution. Sort of set a new standard for outdoor grilling parties....

And the music was just fine. Lots of picking, of course. Fortunato managed to come up for the day, and between him, Greg and Bobert there were three different guitar styles that blended and supported each other perfectly. And you should hear Kate's fiddling and singing. Bobert plays some very fine blues by the way. Bill and I added our bit, as did Fred, and Bobert's wife Eve who isn't much for folk music but knocked us out playing the piano and singing "Send in the Clowns" and another song -- can't remember the title, but I remember how much I enjoyed the song.

At one point Greg said he was going to treat us to a little Cornish Culture. Just to get his goat I muttered, "That's an oxymoron." Well after Greg finished singing "The Oggie Song," one of the rowdiest, silliest and most politically incorrect things I've heard in quite some time, I turned to him and said, "I take it back!"

I felt so happy, relaxed and mellow on the drive home from the mountains, it felt as if I'd been vacationing for a week.

There's a good chance Greg and Kate will get over here again. Hope more 'Catters get a chance to meet and hear them.

Bill has some pics (of course!). We'll try to get them up today.

And, Bill, loved the "Key of R" song on your autoharp. And you think we were goinna just let you off light with that under-the-radar chair ya brought. No such luck and it won't work next time either.

And Fortunato, thanks for playing some fine lead on a couple of my "roudy" blues rockers...

And, of course, Greg and Katie. Geeeee.... Now for any of you cat folk who haven't heard them, you've missed something special. These folks blend traditional folk and cajun styles so perfectly that when you first hear them you're gonna kick yourself for waiting so long to put an ear on 'em. If you can't get to see them, try to get one of their CD's... Fir real...

And as for my beautiful wife, P-Vine (Eve), ya' did yourself proud for having not played or sung much for the last two months. No one knew it, including me...

And, well, Rita hit the nail on the head in describing the taste treat of the evening with my friends Fred's grilled salmon. Yummmmmmmmmm....

Yep, guess ol' Bobert is now a veteran Catter, having come thru his first gathering intact and not duct taped to a tree in the woods.

Wonderful fun. Beautiful home and lovely people. P-vine and Ben and Bobert are great folks. Thanks to Fred for that beautiful salmon (my favorite). Bobert you're welcome, great treat for me to take some seldom used blues licks out for a stroll with your Son House slide. I had lots of fun trying to lay a few island licks in behind Greg's Belafonte...and Kate's Lonesome Blues was a neat surprise...Bill and Ritas songs. There was so much more.

Just one thing, Bobert, the curves on Route 9 are right twisty, I saw my own tailights going round one of those hairpins, man, and the locals behind me were throwing beer cans at me 'cause I slowed down to 50 to make the curve...they were empty cans, of course, and they missed me every time. I crossed the WVA line at 95 mph and out ran them. Them boys may drink it, but they ain't run no shine. Chance

They played the Royal Mile here in Maryland Saturday last and Bobert had a get-together for them near Harpers Ferry on Sunday.

I think they would like to take in some of the sights over the next few days before heading to Staunton for Greg's son's wedding. They are going to try to get down to Fredricksburg and spend a little time at Picker's Supply and may venture thru Richmond but hunting gigs doesn't seem to be a priority...

Makes perfect sense to me. I'm getting ready to do my business travel gig so probably don't have much hope of seeing them anyway if they do get to Richmond.

My recommendations on a previous thread regarding wineries still stands. Harpers Ferry in of itself makes a pleasant day as would a stroll through Old Fredericksburg (I'm surprised Pickers is still in business!).

In Richmond we have various museums, gardens and parks and state government. Just east one can take in some of the James River plantations from the early colonial days (but not near Willamsburg!). And of course Charlottesville offers Monticello and UVA (as well as more of those wineries).

From following these various posts, I can tell you're a warm and gracious host. SOunds like all had a splendid time.

Well now I know how to get written up without being a contributing musician ; instead of an instrument ya bring along a 3 1/2 lb slab of Alaskan Coho and slap it on the barrelhead , then a well-tempered grill liberally sprinkled with Apple wood chips, and ya get more music. Something about the right fuel at the right time in the right setting. and well-fed musicicans. Visiting Virginia with musician friends from New York who were invited to play with Virginia-based musicians for a friendly jam was my first impression of Virginia and kept me coming back . Those gatherings have long since scattered to the 4 winds and seemed like for the longest time the only place I could sit and sup and swap tales and smart-arsed wits with gatherings of fine friends & fine guitarists , all informal-like, was back with my tribe in New York. Well this weekend , at Bobert's & Eve's personal Arboretum de Musique , I 've finally been allowed to recapture the magic that first got me to come to Virginia about 20 years ago and I was enchanted all over again. I would've loved to digital video tape this gathering , but ,unfortunately ,it was far too humid to risk exposing the camera to it. Thus I'm looking forward to doing this again , when these gracious hosts' time allows , as we wend our way into my absolute favorite time of the year ; God Almighty Autumn when you no longer need gills to breathe the air and just the right crispness of night temperature mercifully wakes up the blood and calls the spirit to action. Now that I'm familiar with Bob's "rowdy" ( I calls it "ornary" ) Blues ,which has my ear now, I'm already lobbying him to craft his style around a "correct" rendition of the old Rolling Stone's "Sympathy for the Devil" ( "Beggar's Banquet" Album ) . It was originally written as a slow , growly ,accoustic-bluesy piece before it got all 'over produced' into some over-produced nonsense completely divorced from its original incarnation. Hearing Bob's self-described "rowdy" performance style convinces me he could do it justice as it was originally written. And I want to get that, and his fine original guitar blues sermons, on DV tape and see what happens. Too many magic moments , and grist for new ideas, born out of improvization of the moment are lost because no one thought to capture it. This is gonna chage if I've got anything to do with it. All 'round thanks to the visiting musicians whom helped make Bob & Eve's Hobbit's retreat stir up the muses to everyone's delight. I'd say that was fair exchange for a slab of Alaskan Coho ithat needed a good home anyway. Till we meet again, Fred a.k.a. Taliesn ( Yeah I'm a big time Frank Lloyd Wright freak. What of it. ; )

Well, Fred, your company was special enough in itself without the salmon, but hey.... the fish was mighty tasty if I don't say so myself... And thanks fir the kind words about my "ornery" blues. Yep, more like a train wreck at times. And we'll see about the Stones song when the heat dies down and the thought processes return with the crisp evenings... And, over the winter we'll get some of madness recorded, so that shoulod sanity rear its ugly head I'll have something to look back on when things didn't make quite as much sense...

Well, as fir the on going saga of G & K, well... today they embark on their pilgrimage to parts unknown. With a map in hand and a song in their hearts they are going to start at the wax museum in Hrapers Ferry and then let the the fate of the tossed coin lead them around for the next three days before ending up at their son's wedding in Staunton on Saturday. Oh, to have that freedom to enjoy three blissful days in the "here and now" following the wisdom of a coin.... sigh. (Bobert wipes a tear from his cheek).

Hopefully they will end up in places where folks will be kind enough to allow them to keep this thread going so that we may also partake in their joy of their travels.

Ahhhh, yeah. We went through that stuff when they got here since they are using one of my cars. Kate and I went for a short drive and I think I impressed the "Keep Right" concept into her thinking.

But I'm also thinking they have headed west to escape scarey things like the Washington, D.C. beltway which I ani't too wild about my own Wes Ginny self.

Bill and I were just listening to the Boat Band's CD, "A Trip to the Lakes" (Traditional Cumbrian tunes recorded live at the 1st Duddon Valley Folk Festival, Seathwaite 2001). It is so much fun.

I was stuffing envelopes with FSGW membership cards and welcome letters. Not one of my favorite jobs. The music sure made the time go faster. Bill said, "It's hard to keep from dancing, isn't it?"

well here we are in Staunton. my son davy.s wedding to nicole just finished and all went well.met loads of family, and the preacher was excellent, great hearing Elizabethan English prayers in a big black preacher voice.before thsat we did a reconnoitre(sp?) in strength through W Virginia looking for mountain mommas and country roads. played in Thomas and Elkins. saw quite a lot of trees.now we're haeading back north up the shenandoah for Bobert's place, he dont know that yet but he's sure goona find out soon.understand CarolC is in Shepherdstown tonight so we'll probably end up there. Keep you posted.

Greg, you have to have felt well appointed when sleeping in guest artist quarters lovingly crafted out of a genuine British double-decker bus.

Taliesn: Thanks fir the fine words about Bobert's Bed and Breakfast Blues Bus but the Brits have chosen the comforts of the house. That way, my new drinking buddy Greg is a few steps closer to the beer 'frig'. Ahhh, not to mention Greg's fears of grizzly bears...

Now, as the Cajun Couple don't have too much access to the pudder, I'll get folks caught up on itinerary. The appointment with *the* airplane is 4:00pm Tuesday. (Hey, Bobert... That's tomorrow...) Yikes! They were going to Chance's house, then it was to the Washington Mounument and this morning it was "True Confessions". They are scared to drive anywhere around Washingont, D.C. Hmmmmm? Me too! I reckon this explains why they went off into West Virginia....

Tonite they are going to prepare for the Bobert and the P-Vine an English meal and I've been forwarned that I'[d vbetter be a good sport about it and say "It's great!" so...

It's Great! There, that's incase I don't get back here later.

Greg and Kate, here's hoping your first U.S. visit far surpassed not just your expectations, but your hopes for it.... and here's hoping your second, third, fourth visit, etc. will keep getting better and better. ;-)

Bill and I enjoyed very much meeting you both and hearing you make music. I hope you got some rest though, at some point in this trip!

ps Greg, PM me with your snail mail addy when you get home, and I'll (eventually get around to) send you some pics from last weekend. I hoped to get some printed, over the weekend, but my goodness this is turning out to be a busy week so didn't get to even look at them.

Well, Greg and Kate are now flying over Greenland and in a couple of hours will be landing in London and be, oh, about a half a day off real time. Then its off to Greg's brother's house fir a night (or day) and then home, long enough to brucsh their teeth and then to Scotland to play.

Iz here to say that by the next time you hear from them they will be, ahhhhh... beat!

Now for the good news. Last night, Greg and Kate just backed up a couple of paces and got that cajun stuff workin' slow 'nuff so that the bobert could half figure it out and by the end of the evening, I reckon I could have filled in on rhythm guitar with the Boat Band.

Yep, they wore my boney Wes Ginny butt out. They even had the P-Vine bangin' away on an acoustic and she don't even play much git-fiddle. Thanks fit that, Greg. You're a great teacher, and one heck of a drinkin' buddy...
