From: GUEST,Marie Date: 18 Aug 02 - 07:30 AM Dear Masato, Since it seems you have the lyrics of the "Sweet Child" album at hand, could you post here *PLEASE!!!* the lyrics of the following two songs : "A Woman Like You" and "Sweet Child" !...(my favourites of this album!!!) I would be EXTREMELY, ETERNALLY grateful !!! :-)
|
Subject: Lyr Add: A WOMAN LIKE YOU (Jansch) From: masato sakurai Date: 18 Aug 02 - 09:49 AM Marie, here are the songs.
A WOMAN LIKE YOU
I don't believe I have seen a woman like you anywhere
But a broken heart won't cure my endless search, little girl
I'd rather wait at the door a thousand times, little girl
I don't believe I have seen a woman like you anywhere

Subject: Lyr Add: SWEET CHILD (from Pentangle) From: masato sakurai Date: 18 Aug 02 - 09:51 AM SWEET CHILD (Cox/Jansch/McShee/Renbourn/Thompson)
You've been working so hard all day
Well, I may be a-drinking hard
Well, I would not care to see me hunger within your eyes
Well, I've heard there are great men
And I would rather tear him down
And I once did see a child, she did sit and cry
Won't you lay yourself down to rest ~Masato

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: To Masato, concerning Pentangle... From: GUEST,Marie Date: 18 Aug 02 - 10:24 AM Dear Masato, THANK YOU !!! THANK YOU !!! How can I *EVER* thank you ???!!! (Well, maybe joining as a new member to your Fan Club would be a start! :-) ) |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: To Masato, concerning Pentangle... From: Peter K (Fionn) Date: 18 Aug 02 - 12:03 PM I second the thanks Masato. (Such was the diction of Beert Jansch when singing, by the way, that lyrics should have been a compulsory appendage to every edition of every Pentangle alburm.) |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: To Masato, concerning Pentangle... From: DMcG Date: 18 Aug 02 - 12:14 PM "how can I ever thank you Masato"? Simple. The rest of us have put a thread together for that exact purpose! (You may find it a bit crowded though - most of us have something to thank masato for) |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: To Masato, concerning Pentangle... From: GUEST,Marie Date: 29 Aug 02 - 06:12 AM Dear Masato, I'm trying, these days, to gather as many lyrics from Pentangle as I can!...(quite a challenge; as I'm trying to get the exact words as performed by the band!) So far I've got 17 songs under the belt + 5 in the waiting - that is: with only a few words I can't make out!... One of them is "Sovay" where in the 4th verse, I can't get what's after "hanged" : "And you'll be hanged_____ And you'll be hanged______for murdering me!" Also in the 5th verse I can't get what's after "blush" : "Which made him blush_____ "Which made him blush_____ like any rose" So, if you can have a quick check in your "Sweet Child" album lyrics sheet, I would be very very pleased! (Also, if it's not to much to ask, could you also post here the lyrics of the "Market Song" and "Turn Your Money Green" !!! PLEAAAAASE!!!) :-) MANY THANKS IN ADVANCE!!! :-)
|
Subject: Lyr Add: SOVAY From: masato sakurai Date: 29 Aug 02 - 06:47 AM Marie, I copied all the lyrics from my sheet, where no word is written after the first "hanged."
SOVAY
Sovay, Sovay, all on her day
As she was galloping on her brave
He delivered up his golden store
From my diamond ring I would not part
Next morning in her garden green
Why do you blush, you silly young thing?
I only did it for to know ~Masato

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: To Masato, concerning Pentangle... From: wysiwyg Date: 29 Aug 02 - 10:41 AM Masato is actually pretty humble. The best way to think him has seemed to be to share whatever YOU can, here, for everyone to use and enjoy. ~Susan

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: To Masato, concerning Pentangle... From: nutty Date: 29 Aug 02 - 10:55 AM Masato ...... was this transcribed from the LP or were the lyrics provided?? I learned the song some years ago with the last line of the first verse as away did ride and the first line of the second verse as As she was galloping o'er the plain It certainly makes more sense that way. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: To Masato, concerning Pentangle... From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 29 Aug 02 - 10:59 AM There do seem to be some strange readings there; rather different from what I recall them singing (I don't have that record, so it was rather long ago!) I think they got that version from Bert Lloyd at some point, though they often didn't credit their sources. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: To Masato, concerning Pentangle... From: masato sakurai Date: 29 Aug 02 - 11:20 AM My post is from the lyrics sheet accompanying a Japanese edition (LP), which was made in Japan probably for Japanese customers only. ~Masato |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: To Masato, concerning Pentangle... From: GUEST,Marie Date: 29 Aug 02 - 01:03 PM MASATO, I HAVE TO THANK YOU A LOT !!! ...as although I've only suggested that you would just check and fill in the blanks of a couple of sentences in "Sovay", you've actually been well inspired to post all the lyrics of the song!... It surely gave me the opportunity to clarify a few other things here and there in the transcriptions!...Many thanks for that!!! *PLEASE*, Don't forget also to post here the lyrics of the "Market Song" and of "Turn Your Money Green" (they both come from the same album!)... that is; when you've got the time of course...and only if you don't think that I'm seriously starting to ask too much of you !!! (I'm sure others already do! :-) Many thanks again !!! |
Subject: Masato, thank you again!... From: GUEST,Marie Date: 30 Aug 02 - 06:55 AM Dear Masato, Just in case you haven't read my last post from yesterday,I'd like to take the opportunity here, to thank you for sending me the lyrics of the whole song ("Sovay"), instead of just the few missing words I was asking for!...That was very thoughtful! :-) Marie |

From: GUEST,Marie Date: 31 Aug 02 - 09:23 AM MASATO, I make good progress thanks to you!!! in my "quest" of trying to get all (or at least as much as possible!...) lyrics from Pentangle as I can...Directing me to another link for the "Turn Your Money Green" song proved very useful to correct a couple of mistakes in the transcriptions you've posted!... THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL YOUR HELP!!! and... once again, if it's not too much to ask, it would be very sweet of you if you could post here *in your own time; when it suits you!!!* the following songs: "In Your Mind" and "The Time Has Come" which, of course, are still part of the same album! Oh, my babe, don't you know
So, don't you think of me no more
Oh, my babe, don't you know Marie, I suggest a thread name change; for example, to "Lyr Req: Pentangle's Sweet Child songs", which would be convenient for others. If you agree, click on "HELP" (right above) and ask for the change. ~Masato |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: To Masato, concerning Pentangle... From: GUEST,Marie Date: 02 Sep 02 - 06:57 AM Dear Masato, I've just asked for the thread name change as you suggested, and hope it's going to be dealt with soon!... Meanwhile, THANKS A LOT for your last posting!... Even if the "Japanese edition" transcriptions are not always 100% accurate, they still help me tremendously! I think we are nearly through, now, with the "Sweet Child" album! (...unless you've got some Bonus tracks like on the CD release! :-) So Masato, *when you feel like it* , could you do a (last?!) posting here of the remaining songs, which are (I believe) : "I Loved A Lass" and "Moon Dog" For my part, I'm posting now, hereafter, "Watch The Stars", "No More My lord" and "I've got A Feeling"... so that you can only have a quick check, and tell me which sentences are wrong!... I'm trying to share your workload here! :-) Looking forward to hear from you, Marie |

Cryin', Lord, if you please

Subject: Lyr Add: I LOVED A LASS / MOON DOG From: masato sakurai Date: 06 Feb 03 - 09:00 PM Marie, here you are. I LOVED A LASS Oh, I loved a lass and I loved her so well That I hated all others for eyes that sparkle But now she's rewarded me well for all my love She's a-goin' to be wed to another When I saw my love to the church go With bride and bridemaids she made a fine show I followed her on with a heart full of woe She's a-goin' to be wed to another When I saw my love sit down to dine I sat down beside her to the board and the wine I drank to the lassie that should have been mine She's a-goin' to be wed to another And the men in the forest they asked it of me Saying how many strawberries grow in the salt sea I answered them back with a tear in my eye How many ships sail in the harbour? MOON DOG He's a beggar on a street corner To most passers by that's all he is Playing a black pawnbroker Moon dog is But to me he's something special As he sits alone a-playing his drum If I play he's right here with me Moon dog is All you people who did see him Won't you tell me what I misseed By never seeing this son of rhythm 'Cause that's what Moon Dog is ~Masato |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Pentangle's Sweet Child songs From: GUEST,Marie Date: 07 Feb 03 - 05:36 PM Dear Masato, Thanks a lot!!!!! It is the last time you're gonna hear from me with regards to Pentangle! A page of history is being turned I guess... :-)(-: |
Subject: Lyr Add: I LOVED A LASS (from John Renbourn) From: Sumer Date: 20 Sep 04 - 08:13 PM I LOVED A LASS Oh, I loved a lass and I loved her so well That I hated all others o' her that spake ill But now she's rewarded me well for all my love She's a-goin' to be wed to another When I saw my love to the church go With bride and bridemaids she made a fine show I followed her on with a heart full of woe She's a-goin' to be wed to another When I saw my love sit down to dine I sat down beside her and I poured out the wine I drank to the lassie that should have been mine She's a-goin' to be wed to another And the men in the forest they asked of me Saying how many strawberries grow in the salt sea I answered them back with a tear in my eye How many ships sail in the forest? Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Pentangle's Sweet Child songs From: GUEST,Andrew Date: 22 Sep 04 - 07:54 AM I'm glad this thread is reopened, as I missed it originally. I was about to make the correction in first verse 'of her that spak ill' but Sumer got there first. I also love the last verse alhough not sure that I understand it any better than when I used to sing it in clubs 25 yr ago. What a collection of great songs and memories. I will have to dust off my copy of Sweet Child which is definately British rather than Japanese. Might even dust off my song book and sing a few again. Andrew |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Pentangle's Sweet Child songs From: Tootler Date: 25 May 07 - 02:36 PM Found this thread when I was looking for the words of "I loved a lass" I have been listening to Ian Campbell's version of this song recently and he sings five verses rather than the four given above. The fifth verse is: Go dig my grave both wide and deep And cover it o'er with flowers so sweet And I'll turn in to take a long sleep And maybe, come time, I'll forget her. I feel this verse adds to the song and makes it feel complete. BTW, I was somewhat surprised to find that this song was not in the DT database. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Pentangle's Sweet Child songs From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 25 May 07 - 03:45 PM There are several versions of the song (Roud 154) in the DT. There are more in the Forum. See thread Lyr & Tune add: The False Bride for a list; there are probably others by now. It is fairly old, and like many traditional songs is found under several different titles. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Pentangle's Sweet Child songs From: Tootler Date: 25 May 07 - 06:21 PM Malcolm, thanks for the info. Some interesting variants there, though the theme remains the same. It is fairly old, and like many traditional songs is found under several different titles. I appreciated that it was a traditional song, but the second part of your statement highlights a problem when searching for the words of a traditional song - that of varying titles. I followed your link and among the many variants, I found that I had two in books on my bookshelf, if I had only realised it. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Pentangle's Sweet Child songs From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 25 May 07 - 08:55 PM 'Titles', as Dick Greenhaus has often said here, 'are a snare and a delusion'. Often they vary; often people post lyrics here and elsewhere under mis-spelled or even completely imaginary names. Always search, if the title you expect doesn't get you very far, for a phrase or phrases from a text you already know. That will almost always get better results, and clues to further examples. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Pentangle's Sweet Child songs From: GUEST,John (guest) Date: 15 Mar 08 - 02:25 PM Lyrics "I loved a lass" correction Hi, I think that the first verse should read "I loved a lass, and I loved her sae well That I hated all other o' her that spak ill" |
Subject: Lyr Add: SWEET CHILD (from Pentangle) From: GUEST,John Date: 15 Mar 08 - 03:44 PM I'm sorry I shoul have noticed the I loved a lass had already been corrected. I'd like to submit the following version of Sweet Child, I've make a few corrections which I think are correct. There is only one verse that I'm really not sure of but I think that my version is better than the previous one. And I've thought about a man With us in his love Who sheds his tears upon every mortal soul I wonder does he yearn Sweet child, for death to come for him The first three lines are very unclear. "Love" in the second line could be "life", but doesn't make much sense to me. I've tried to isolate both Bert's and Jacqui's voices. I'm not absolutely sure if the last doesn't end "for death to comfort him". I prefer "come for him". I think this follows quite well after the previous verse, perhaps as a reference to Christ, although theologically I'm not at all sure what a priest would make of Christ 'yearning for death'. Sweet Child You've been working so hard all day Won't you take your rest? You've been driving my blues away Now it is my turn Come hide beneath my wings Sweet child, it may not be so long Well, I may be a-drinking hard Like a fish that swims And I could be riding high Mark me floating by And if the rain does fall Sweet child, I would not let you drown Well, I would not care to see untruth in your eyes I would not care to know where your heart does lie I've try to trust my heart But my eyes are pale and weary Sweet child, come to me now, let me take your hand Well, I do not know you well, yet I tried so hard Through four and twenty years Sweet child, I still don't understand Well, I've heard there are great men Who could save our souls With kind and gentle hearts And love is their goal I really want to know Sweet child, who could shoot them down And I've thought about a man With us in his love Who sheds his tears upon every mortal soul I wonder does he yearn Sweet child, for death to come for him And I once did see a child, she did sit and cry Where has the pretty flower in the darkness gone? In the summer you shall see Sweet child, I guess it won't be long Won't you lay yourself down and rest Let your mind relax And won't you cuddle into the night I will guide your path Well, I may not be here long 'Cause I got a feeling to be gone |
