From: Joe Offer

Hi, Conrad - It's probably best to come back here a few times over the next couple days and check on the progress of this thread.
The closest thing we have here in the database is this, a song by Bill Staines, but I don't think that's the one you're looking for. There's a really good Catholic hymn called "Praise the Lord My Soul," written by Jesuit John Foley in 1975. It is based on Psalm 103:
PRAISE THE LORD MY SOUL
by John Foley, S.J., copyright 1975

1. Praise the Lord, my soul,
Let fire and rain give praise to Him
Give praise to him who is merciful, slow to judge
Bless the Lord, O my soul
Bless the Lord, O my soul

2. Bless the Lord, my soul,
Let all I am give praise to Him
And not forget He is kind, He forgives our sins,
Bless the Lord, O my soul
Bless the Lord, O my soul

3. Merciful and kind,
He knows our ways, He knows we're dust,
And like the flowers that flourish, we soon must die,
Bless the Lord, O my soul
Bless the Lord, O my soul

4. Glory to our God,
Let all that is give praise to Him
Give praise to Him all you creatures who live His love,
Bless the Lord, O my soul
Bless the Lord, O my soul

Could that be the one you're looking for? I can post the tune if it is. If it isn't, please tell us more about the song so we can find it.

Is this the one?

Bless the Lord (by J. W. Peterson, 1958)

Bless the Lord and sing His praises,
Bless the Lord Now, O my soul,
Join the song all heaven raises,
Let the anthem loudly roll!

(chorus)
Bless the Lord, O my soul,
Bless the Lord, O my soul;
Bless the Lord, O my soul,
And all that is within me Bless His holy name.

Bless the Lord for love victorious,
Love that conquered on the tree;
For His grace so great and glorious,
Flowing out of Calvary.

Bless the Lord, He walks beside me
And He lights the path before
Ev'ry need is now supplied me
From His bounteous heav'nly store

Bless the Lord for truth He's given--
For the word of prophecy
That has drawn the veil from heaven
And revealed my destiny.

Hi,

Here's another couple of alternatives, (from Mission Praise)

"Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me bless His holy name."

or,

"Bless the Lord, O my soul,Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me bless His holy name.",

both are more or less taken directly from Psalm 103. Is either the one you're looking for?

I know there's a hymn site somewhere, maybe one of the others will leave you a link to it.

I czeched in with the cyber hymnal and several places. It seems that the recordings of Brush Arbor are fast being forgotten. One of the search results produced a list of a recording of Brush Arbor favorites but when I clicked on buy cd it produced a link to the modern contemporary Brush Arbor the gospel group. Their cd does not have Psalm 103 as I managed to find a track listing of it. I have passed along all of your suggestions. What I want to know is what ever became of the real original Brush Arbor!

There's a version that I've sung at vespers of Psalm 104:

Bless the lord O my soul
Blessed are Thou
Blessed are Thou O Lord
How glorious are thy works O Lord
In wisdom hast thou made them all
Who has created all, who has created all
Glory to thee O Lord glory to thee

Or.. the First Antiphon of the Orthodox liturgy:

Bless the lord O my soul, blessed art thou O lord
Bless the lord O my soul and all that is within me bless his holy name
Bless the lord o my soul and forget not all his benefits
Who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases
Who redeems your life from the pit
Who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy
Who satisfies you with good as long as you live
So that your youth is renewed like the eagle's
The lord works vindication and justice for the oppressed
He made known his ways to Moses, his acts to the people of Israel
The lord is compassionate and merciful, long-suffering and of great goodness
Bless the lord o my soul and all that is within me bless his holy name
Blessed art thou o lord

I don't know if that's anything like what you're looking for.. but.. well, just on the offchance. :)

Subject: Lyr Add: BRUSH ARBOR MEETING
From: Joe Offer
Date: 28 May 98 - 06:08 PM

I'd sure like to know more about Brush Arbor singing. I've searched the Web and found some interesting tidbits, but I don't think I've found the whole story. Here's something, though:

Brush Arbor meeting

Some gold morning when this life is o'er
I'll fly away ( in the morning )
To a home on God's celestial shore
I'll fly away ( I'll fly away )

Years ago, when I was just a boy in the Oklahoma hills
They didn't have a church in which to pray
So the people got together and they built one of their own
Just a shelter made of poles with a roof of hay

Well, it wasn't just a Baptist or a Church of the Nazarene
But people of all faiths came there to pray
And it didn't make no difference the color or the time
And lots of folks would sing till break of day

And they called it a Brush Arbor meeting
You could hear the people singing far away
Just praising the Lord, and shouting victory
I can still hear them singing today
There is power, power, wonder working power
In the precious blood of the Lamb

Now a day the churches are so pretty and so nice
And they all have different names upon their door
I wish we all would shout and sing like we used to long ago
And come together like they did before

* Refrain

Give me that old time religion
Give me that old time religion
Give me that old time religion
It's good enough for me

* Refrain

Here is a picture of a brush arbor. It seems to have been the original meeting place of many religious congregations, especially in the South.
We didn't build brush arbors back in my day, in the Catholic Church of the Midwest. It was too cold for outdoor services, so we built gymnasiums. We'd have Sunday Mass amidst the baskets until we got enough money to build a church. Then we'd build a new gym, and move Sunday Mass to the gym when the congregation outgrew the church. This seemed to be an endless cycle. I think that religious services and the smell of old sweat will be forever bound together in my memory.
Psalms 103 and 104 both start out with "Bless the Lord, O my soul," but I think 103 is the more familiar Psalm because 104 is too darn long. I've hear many beautiful renditions of Psalm 103, but I don't think any of them is the one we're supposed to be talking about here.

One version I've heard is a chorus sung in less formal worship styles:

Bless the Lord, Oh my soul and all that is within me bless His Holy Name (Repeat) He has done great things, He has done great things, He has done great things bless His Holy Name.

If you go to http://www.brusharbor.com/recordings.html and scroll down to the I Will Follow album from 1983, it's on that one. Says it is available in CD copied from the LP.
I can still hear it in my head from so many years ago & I understand why you want this version. I was looking for it myself!
Sad it took a few years for your answer!

Sir's 28 May 98 - 11:45 PM post is how I remember singing this song in my Black Baptist church in New Jersey (at least the 1960s and on).
The song had a moderately slow tempo.

Here are the words as I remember them:

Bless the Lord, Oh my soul
And all that is within me
Bless His Holy Name

Bless the Lord, Oh my soul
And all that is within me
Bless His Holy Name

He has done great things
He has done great things
He has done great things
Bless His Holy Name
{Repeat entire verse 1x)

Bless the Lord, Oh my soul
And all that is within me
Bless His Holy Name

Bless the Lord, Oh my soul
And all that is within me
Bless His Holy Name

Here are links to three YouTube videos of African American choirs/groups singing "Bless the Lord O My Soul". The first link is the closest to the way I remember this song being sung.

Note- this quartet adds this verse at the end:

The "black gospel" version some of you are familiar with was arranged and written (music) by Andrae Crouch. His arrangement of the words from Psalm 103 are available on several of his and others' recordings that are still sold widely, esp. here Stateside.

Sing Along,

Hi, Kehau-
Can you give us at least part of the lyrics you recall, so we can get an idea what song it it? Song titles can be deceptive, since many songs can have the same name.
-Joe-

I did find one called "Bless the Lord" on the album called 20 Years, 20 songs. Here's what I hear:
BLESS THE LORD

CHORUS
Bless the Lord, my soul,
Bless the Lord, my soul,
Bless the Lord, my soul,
Praise His holy name.

The Lord is good (the Lord is good)
He reigns forever (he reigns forever)
He is merciful (repeat)
Praise His holy name.

The Lord is good (the Lord is good)
He reigns forever (he reigns forever)
He is merciful (repeat)
Praise His holy name.
CHORUS

The Lord is good (the Lord is good)
He reigns forever (he reigns forever)
He is merciful (repeat)
Praise His holy name.
CHORUS

[repeat this pattern over and over]

For yours is the kingdom
The power and the glory
Forever and ever, Amen.
(repeat over and over)

Nice song - thanks for introducing me to this group.
-Joe-

Sandra,

As I mentioned above, the music to the version you linked to was written by Andrae Crouch. His recordings are still available, he is still ministering and performing and there are literally hundreds if not thousands of recordings of his version of this song.

Sing Along,

Steve

Did no one explain to Conrad Bladey that the album he found titled "Brush Arbor Favorites" did not refer to the NAME of the soloist? Brush Arbor would have referred to a meeting ground for a community. "Revival" meetings, maybe a week long, would be held there in the summers & lots of congregational singing would occur. Sometimes augmented by soloists or local musical "stars". This album is probably a collection of some of the most popular of the gospel songs & hymns from some of those meetings. Tw

My wife, just this morning, said: "Remember Brush Arbor's song,'Bless the Lord, O My Soul' that we used to sing so often?" I recalled it as:

Bless the Lord, O my Soul
And all that is within me bless his holy name.
Bless the Lord, O my Soul
And never forget the glorious he hss done for me.

He forgives all my sins,
He heals all my diseases,
Ransoms my soul from hell,
He surrounds me lovingkindness and compassion

He fills my heart with good things,
Just as my heart is renewed like the eagles.

Bless the Lord, O my Soul,
And all that is within bless he Holy Name,
His holy name.

He forgives all my sins,
He heals all my diseases,
Ransoms my soul from hell,
He surrounds me lovingkindness and compassion

Bless the Lord O my Soul
And all that is within bless his holy Name
Bless his holy name
