HI all

Just got back from Towersey Festival and I've had a grand time. The weather was lovely most of the time and I got a tad sun burnt.....my shoulders were that red and hot you could have fried eggs on them and I did a great lobster impression!!!

The singing in the barn was wonderful and I met new friends and other fellow mudcatters!

Great singing in the Barn and big thanks to Tony

PS Martin is getting better

Apologies to those who haven't got a clue what I'm talking about

It was rather fun!! Aly Bain and Phil Cunningham were merde chaud, the Kate Rusby set I missed, but was good by all accounts, and the arena shows were great - they included the Sheffield City Giants War and Peace(shameless nepotism here, I was with them this weekend) who did several spots and 3 processions including the torchlight procession on Monday night. Seven Champions were also there, and did a wonderful pisstake of the giants dance, much enjoyed by the crew, who threw down the gauntlet (it belonged to War and is 2 ft long!), but were denied the chance to wreak revenge.

Our own Sam Pirt held court several times at some fantastic impromptu sessions on the showground and stunned the assembled crowds. The Brat Pack set (or whatever they are called) in the village hall may possibly necessitate its re-roofing before long!

It was fantastic and I've already booked for next year!

I too had a great time. it was good to put faces to names. Some songs I wontbe able to sing again without thinking of the variants. Liz just how many feet does a marrow normally have? It may have limped in all on its own.

Liz - that makes me think of:

Oh, what a beauty, I've never seen one as big as that before.
Oh, what a beauty, It must be three foot long or even four.
It's such a lovely colour, so long and round and fat,
I've never seen a marrow that was quite as big as that.
Oh, what a beauty, I've never seen one as big as that,
- I've never had one as big as that,
I've never seen one as big as that before.

I hope you did nothing untoward with said example of cucurbiture.....

Great to be at Towersey again for another time. Thanks to all the singers in the Barn, which is is a good replacement for the old Cellar Bar sessions at Bracknell. I see many faces that I see only once a year but as I've said to Barry, John and Andy we've all validated our existance and lived another year ! Great to meet up with you, Dave after so long - won't make Sunday unfortunately - on pool duty. Looking round the room during the singing of "Only Remembered" I noticed many, besides me, with a quiet tear rolling down their cheek. What would we have given to have Rod and Dave back with us. Great sessions Tony and if Moira sings any more songs about "Evening Classes" I think Liz the Squeak will expire. Best wishes to all - my first message - having been informed of Mudcat by Dave Bryant - BUTTERS

Butters - who were you in real life and do I owe you a beer? If not, are you the bastard who drank my beer???

It wasn't only Dave and Rod, but Fliss Henderson as well who was being remembered. She was one of the friendliest ladies I ever met, with a singing voice like 2" steel ball bearings being rolled down a corrugated iron roof in tune.... to use her own description!

A bittersweet weekend again...

Time is rolling onward, and the toll it takes is dear, And every year there's one less voice, who will it be next year?

Alison Humphries, who wrote "Evening classes", has written several parodies that would have been worthy of Dave Houlden. She's currently living in Canada, but will be popping over to London in the autumn (among other things, she's appearing as a third of Voiceover at the Cabbage Patch in Twickenham).

I only made it to the barn for the lunchtime session on Monday but it was good to see and hear several Catters. Thank you all, especially the Admiral.

Indeed Kitty , good to see you too, Many thanks to the Admiral for the effort he and Pearl put into the singarounds, other Catters seen and recognised Included KingBrilliant and entourage, and an American storyteller called Dan Kedding(?)who told as Nasrudin story wonderfully well, and the usual suspects in the Barn,

Hi all
Nice to see various 'cats about the place. Especially LTS at the bottom of the field.
Sorry we didn't get to the barn this year. I was coming down with an evil cold-lurgy and zero enthusiasm for anything. Didn't want to speak let alone sing.
See ya next year....

Dear Liz I'm the tall guy at the back with THE SINGERS who sang "English Ale" & "Down the Road", quite close to you in the lunchtime Barn Sessions. If you remember I sat most of the afternoon talking to Dave, whilst I think you were at the other table with Moira, Sylvia, Tony et al. I have the priviledge of knowing wuo you are since Dave told that your moniker was "Liz the Squeak". I'm a member of the Ram Club at Claygate and "Wee Bobbie Wood" is one of unsung heroes. I've been around the perimeter of the Folk Scene for over 55 years and remember going to the Ballad & Blues Club in the early days where McColl, Bert Lloyd, Shirley Collins, Robin Hall & Jimmie McGregor, Fitzroy Coleman? would all be in the same room together before they all went off on their solo careers. We used to sing choruses from an A4 "hymn sheet" . Best wishes to you and all my friends out their in the folk world. Yours in harmony BUTTERS.

It certainly is in the right place Mike! Thanks to everyone for all the nice things said about Pearl and I and I still won't repeat what we say every year about how it wouldn't work but for the exceptional Singers that we get in the Barn every year (honest - I won't!). I wonder how those who went to Bridgnorth feel about it now? But the real reason for posting is to tell all those who contributed that Pearl has done a full count and between Grove and Towersey Barn the Fliss Henderson Memorial Appeal for the Lincolnshire Air Ambulance has raised £280.00.

Again thanks to everyone!

Tony

Well I saw a few of you in a new light.

Admiral, I've known you for ages.

I identified Liz the Squeak for obvious reasons, and I'm not sure I want to be that close to it again when it goes off.

I think I got Dave Bryant, but Butters and CatsPHiddle I missed. Was she the little round red-head?

And who was the large black haired girl sitting by the wall next to the gnome in the silly stripy hat? She didn't seem to be enjoying herself at all. I did try to speak to her but she just looked straight through me. Pity, she looked dead bored and I was only trying to cheer her up.

Sorry Butters, still can't place you.... but due to illness and other commitments (playing with Giants and pissing off morris dancers) I didn't spend as much time in the Barn as I usually do. I found the atmosphere was just too much for me, and I couldn't cope with it or standing for long periods. I guess I'm not as well as I thought I was..... it's taken me all week to recover whereas it used to take a day. The sooner I discover what it is that causes it, the better!

Guest, if you identify yourself next time, I'll try and avoid 'going off' when you are there.

Grand result there Admiral - thank you for doing that.

Guest, I am the tall black haired girl and if you spoke to me I would have spoken to back . I spoke to alot of people and heard many wonderful singers over the weekend.

I wasn't bored at all. THe week running up to Towersey I had a severe allergic reaction to something and was on a high dose of antibiotics which I was still on up until the saturday night of the festival. At one point I was in hospital where they were deciding whether I had to be put on a drip. Because I was on such a high dose of antibiotics they had side effects and I got very tired very quickly amongst other things that aren't so pleasant so I won't go into them at this time in the morning.

Everyone knows the short man with the stripey hat. Apparrently he has been wearing it for years!

Guest maybe you should think back. It is quite sad when someone can tell the the difference between being bored and being ill.

Thankyou Admiral for a wonderful sing-a-round in the barn over the weekend. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and will be there next year.

Take care all

Cat

Ah Liz TS, that must have been you with 'War' at the finale as I (as a fairly ineffective steward) was trying to be extra security. As for seeing anything of the festival, once you get as far as a walkie-talkie the chances of seeing anything fade in proportion with how far up the pecking order you get! Still it was a fun weekend. Roll on next year. Nick

Sorry, I meant anonymous.

BTW GUEST, the gnome in the stripey hat is no less than that pillar (I took great care over the last two letters of that word) of the UK mudcat contingent MICCA.

Incidently MICCA, is there any truth in the rumour that CATSPHIDDLE has been spiking your flask with Viagra - Linda didn't even have to dress up in her J-T-L-Q costume to get me turned on after that last swig ! - and I became a grandad on Bank holiday Monday !

Dave, I am sure the Guest above knows very well who all of us are and is a well known member of the Mudcat under a "proper name" but chooses to weasel there way around sniping and being malicious and small minded. Maybe they should be "outed" so that the rest of the UK Catters can see them for what they really are? But remember Rule 1, dont feed the Trolls.... The Hip flask contained Rum and Shrub and that was all... jolly good wasnt it? Kims ,on the other hand contained....Grappa and Rocket fuel(as if there was any difference between them) Not to mention his notorious Druid Fluid!!!!!!!

We've got a marrow in our kitchen too. It was left under LIz's flysheet. Apparently a memder of Black Annis was giving them out to Towersey Morris and Roger passed his onto Liz.

Nick - yes. 'twas I behind War in the finale, and have handled a walkie talkie (or squawk box as we call them) many a time.... I like to do my sessions early in the morning because a) I'm up then, b). I'm relatively sober then, c) No-one else likes to do their stint at that time, d) it gets it over and done with and e) I am unbearably cheerful in the mornings and want to annoy the shit out of as many people as possible.

Guest - you need to learn that we aren't going to eat you if you identify yourself. Well, not under most circumstances.

As for the marrow, it has been the subject of much conversation and is apparently one of two that the aforementioned Roger was given, he passed one to me thinking I would like it. Which indeed I do... but it is rather a large one and I can't possibly use it all at once.... it may take more than one sitting..... it was just the shock of finding it there....

And Manitas, your spelling is appalling. My excuse is I'm pished now, you should know better!
