This was a wonderful story on NPR this past weekend. You can listen to it by clicking here.

Here's a bit of a blurb about it: Sun Records launched Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis. Host Scott Simon talks with producer Hank Davis, who has put together a new boxed set of works from the lesser-known women who recorded for the label in the 50s and 60s, and also to two of those artists: Barbara Pittman and Barbara Thomas Salloum. (17:49)

I found it very poignant and enlightening. They are still looking for a few of the women whose tapes they found and have released. Enjoy...

Yup, Barbara Pittman was great. Perhaps the best Rockabilly gal was Wanda Jackson. Quite a few others came outta that studio...Billy C. Riley, and Harmonica Frank were two more of my favourites.....but the best of all was Charlie Rich singing Lonely Weekends.

Cheers and thanks kat

Rick

Just watched "The Legacy of Sun Records" (probably a rerun) on "American Masters" on PBS this evening. It was a docu about how the founder of Atlantic Records got together a bunch of old Sun Records artists and those whom they inspired, in 2000, on the 50th anniversary of Sun Records, and cut covers and original artists of a lot of the songs which wound up bringing rock and roll to life.

Mark Knopfler was there as well as Paul McCartney, Matchbox Twenty and a band I'd not heard, but really liked, "Live." Of course, they had as many of the old artists as possible, including the above-mentioned Pittman, Riley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Sam Phillips, himself, and many others.

If you haven't seen it, it's well worth the viewing, imo. Lots of old footage, old artists talking about how it was AND kicking up a storm still performing. It was inspiring and made my toes tap!

You may read more about it, plus watch some parts that weren't included by clicking here.

There was a Sun Recording I remember reading about several years ago.Apparently Scotty Moore recorded an instrumental version of "Blues Stay Away From Me" and if you listen to it on headphones you can hear Elvis, who was present at the session, singing the song off microphone. Does anyone know of this recording, and if so, how to obtain a copy?

Regards.

Sidewinder.
