Subject: My Ship Has Sails That Are Made of Wood
From: GUEST,praisesinginglady@msn.com
Date: 27 Aug 02 - 09:15 PM

This song was from an old Ginger Rogers film, possibly The Major and the Minor. It started with words...My ship has sails that are made of wood... Not sure if that's the title or not. Is there another web site for old songs?

Thanks for your help.

Lila

This is a hard one -

I used one of my favorites - "The International Movie Database" http://www.imdb.com

http://us.imdb.com/Name?Rogers,+Ginger

It is NOT from The Major and the Minor.
The songs in the film are:

"BLUES IN THE NIGHT"
Written by Harold Arlen
Lyrics by Johnny Mercer
Played on radio and one line sung by Raymond Roe

"SWEET SUE"
Written by Victor Young
Sung by chorus of cadets

"DREAM LOVER"
Written by Victor Schertzinger
Lyrics by Clifford Guy
Used instrumentally as the fateful "third waltz"

Our GUEST has been contacted and referred to other areas for her search.

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

This query certainly gives us nautical music fanatics something to chew on..."wooden sails." Appropriate for ships in the forest, perhaps. Maybe bark would be possible, but then a "bark" is not a "ship" unless it's a "ketch." I'm not sure where I'm going with this, and I'm not even being as helpful as Gargoyle.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Are you sure you're not talking about "My Ship Has Sails That Are Made of Silk"?

You're having a hard time finding those sails made of wood because they're really made of silk. The song is "My Ship," Music by Kurt Weill, Lyrics by Ira Gershwin, from the 1941 Broadway musical LADY IN THE DARK, made into a 1944 movie starring Ginger Rogers.
My ship has sails that are made of silk
The decks are trimmed with gold
And of jam and spice
There's a paradise
In the hold

My ship's aglow with a million pearls
And rubies fill each bin
The sun sits high in a sapphire sky
When my ship comes in

I can wait the years
Till it appears
One fine day
One spring
But the pearls and such
They won't mean much
If there's missing just one thing...

I do not care
If that day arrives
That dream need never be
If the ship I sing
Doesn't also bring
My own true love to me

If the ship I sing
Doesn't also bring
My own true love to me

Too bad, Uncle Dave and JJ. I was really just getting into wooden sails. Actually I've seen some neat model sailing boats at the Thomaston state prison shop here in Maine with wooden sails. Wouldn't you know you silk fanatics would worm your way into this thread.

We will pray with those old Druids,
They drink fermented fluids,
Waltzing naked through the woo-ids...

Cheerily,
Charley Noble
