I had yet another magical experience...enough about my apprentice. I was on my way to the shower in the football club on Sunday morning, when, as I passed a maquee, a guy came out of it and walked ahead of me. I said 'Oh bugger' because I had forgotten my 75p for the shower. He turned round and said 'Oh dear, what's the matter' I explained and he put his hand in his pocket and gave me the money. 'You can't do that,' I said,'it sounds like me begging' 'Think of it as busking, and sing me a song' so I sang a verse of Indian Lass to him. My name's Tom by the way, and he then introduced me to his wife Lynn. 'Come and see me perform at 11.00 in the marquee' so I did. Tom Who? Tom Lewis. As I stood in the doorway watching, he said over the mike 'You look cleaner now Sally!'

You never know with the Bromyard pubs. Hop Pole is usually good, but some years it's mostly instrumental. Bay Horse (probably in the beer tent at the back), Crown & Sceptre, Rose & Lion. I even found a good Irish SONG session in the Queens last year.

And the no longer young, but still young at heart tin whistle pest, Vin Garbutt will be there again. Should be a good one.

Even more amazing I will be there all weekend which is the first for a long long time. Someone mentioned the Hop Pole as a likely song session venue, so I'll be there - where else would the good song sessions likely be? is the Bay Horse still worth a try as it used to be the place for me.

AND THE WEATHER FORECAST IS GOOD !! thats not at all traditional for Bromyard !!

Year before last we had 10 hours singing over 2 days in the pub at the end, by the dance square and we didn't repeat a song! No musicians allowed (AWW saw to that!)Any one fancy a repeat on Saturday & Sunday during the day we haven't got tickets this year and plan to drive over for both days if there will be good singing?

Bromyard is a great festival and I wish that I could make it this year. Unfortunately Family dictates that I can't bugger off for two consecutive weekends and we were at Walton last week. It is worth while buying a season ticket even if you spend most of the day in the pub sessions. The late night concerts and ceilidhs are great and Johnny Collins Sunday morning session is not to be missed. I hope to make it back in a couple of years when my son has finished his GCSE's.Have a good one!!!

Why not buy a season ticket that includes camping and actually finacially support the festival that causes the sars and sessions to happen.

It is a very selfish attitude to think you can get something for free.

If we all did as you there wouldn't be Bromyard, or other, fetivals.

And anyway you might find you enjoy what goes on at the festival site.

I remember my 1st Bromyard very well: Here's a little ditty wot I wrote retrosectively, to commemorate this trip. Mary Brettel from Brisbane was there too, along with Alan Bano Banister and a few other Aussies who I forget, alas. It was only my 2nd ever folk fest, (Sidmouth was my 1st ever) and it made a big impression on me. Around the camp fire one night, we were singing MArtain Said, in the company of a very young Vin Garbutt, who was standing there with abiut a dozen (remaining) 'Valley of Tees' LPs under his arm; I bought one, of course, but lost it. Now you can't get it...Arghh!. Feel free to borrow the following, tune available on request!

1974 (BROMYARD)

In 19-hundred & 74 me father he taught me the score, he gave me a joint & gave me a beer, it left me feeling rather queer: he took me off to Bromyard to hear them sing folk songs, The days were good the night s were too it just went on & on

Chorus: With Fol-de-rols, & do-dah-days, With Fol-de-rols, & do-dah-days, With Fol-de-rols, & do-dah-days, With Fol-de-rols, & do-dah-days,

In a field this Piper stood with pipes across his arm, The tune he played in welcome had a certain Galic charm he marched us up to the top of the hill for beer & local fare, but we got such a shock when we found 10 accordians there!

Now accordians me father sez are a party by themsel's but more than 2 inside one room is my idea of hell I've had enough of this he sez, it's got beyond a joke I'm off down to the campsite to roll another smoke.

Next we went along to see the 'Young Tin Whistle Pest'* join in with the chorus he said and I did me level best, but I was pissed & I was wrecked and as he sang his songs I joined in with the choruses & got them Bloody Wrong!

On the last night of the festival, sittin; round a fire, singing 'Martin Said to His Man' I was pissed & Stoned & tired, But I joined oin with the singing of this famous old folk song And when it came to my turn I got it Bloody wrong;

The Folks around the camp fire turned & stared at me, It seemed that I had roo-eye-ind their 5 part harmonie-ies: I snuck off like a thief in the night but then thought: wot the hell I will wright my own folk songs ... (and get them wrong aswell)!

So if you're a Folkin' Virgin @ a festival of song, and you get an urge, like you wanna sing along; take my advice sit near the back, sing quietly as you go, then if you get the bugger wrong, nobody will know!

If it was Black Swan with the luminous swords, they stole the idea from Barnsley Longsword (that's what Manitas says but I think it was Carlisle longsword team) who were doing it before half of Black Swan were in short trousers!

It was at the LNE at Sidmouth in 1989 when I saw them; they put a UV purple light on a tent pole, and turned all the others off. All you could see were these disembodied white shirts and stockings, all glowing an eerie purple and the reflective tape they had on the longswords. They danced around the pole, in complete silence apart from the footfalls which were so crisp and together (not like Black Swan when I saw them at Towersey, think they'd been celebrating a bit too much), and it was one of those moments that remain in the memory for ever.

I thought I'd dreamed it (bearing in mind it was Sidmouth and it was a Late Night Extra after several pints of beer.... until a couple of years ago, whilst at a giant moot in Sheffield, I was describing this dance (to a member of Sheffield City Morris, strangely enough), and there was a member of the team there! He confirmed that I wasn't losing that particular marble, and said it was the dance they are most remembered for. All those years of dancing out, forgotten. One dance with a UV light and they go down in history!

Good to see that someone else has taken it up, it is very effective if done well.

I was really looking forward to seeing Cara Dillon especially after the big build up she has had in the folk press. This was the first time I had actually seen her and I was a bit disappointed. I felt she did not compare well with some of the other singers of her own generation on the folk scene such as Kate Rusby. Cara has a lovely delicate voice but I thought the instrumental accompaniment from two of the Lakemans was quite inappropropriate and she would have been better singing unaccompanied or backed by something like a harp. I found her constant fondling of the microphone very irritating. The highlight of the festival for me was the set by John Spiers and John Boden - again an act I saw for the first time and I was very impressed and will be looking out for them again. I think the Mrs Ackroyd Band should have been the final act - what could be better than Earwig-0 for finishing off a wonderful festival.

Had a double fantastic time, Must agree with the Cara Dillon bit and by the so does Dick Dixon (the Artistic Director) he booked her on reputation and thought things were the wrong way round.I mean John Spiers and John Boden were mega good and I think it won't be long before they're headlining.

Sadly, I agree with you about Cara Dillon. Not strong enough to finish the W/e. She must have felt it too when her audience got thinner. Not a good confidence builder.

I thought the food was brilliant - did anyone try Celestial Pizza's aubergine and caper pizza? To die for!!

I'm suffering sinusitus from the fine dust that was in the air. Makes a difference from the usual snuffles after the cold and rain.

Great festival. Sang shanties for the Shellback Chorus and danced for the Shakespeare Morris Men (on Saturday afternoon). Weather was good but it did get cold in the evenings - brrrr! Your 6 foot 2 inch hotwater bottle must have worked, Ali.

Had a smashing singaround at the Moor and Coast tent on Sunday night after the final concert - at about 12 midnight to 2 am. I thought that Sheffield City Morris were very good in town and the Black Swan(?) Rapper were brilliant on the stage - very mystical, with luminous-painted swords and special lighting!

Disappointed with Cara Dillon as the final act. Although she has a beautiful voice, it was rather downbeat compared with the upbeat finish of the Mrs Ackroyd Band, which were on before her.

Great to see a lot of Mudcatters too - too many to mention. Enjoyed the lemonade, Sally.

camping at Bromyard is an institution, first frost of the year has definitely advanced from Bromyard to Banbury Folk 'n Good Music day and anyway Bromyard is a week ealier this year and the forecast is very encouraging.

The BBC weather outlook for 5 days says it's going to be a good weekend. Intermittandt sun and about 22c. Nights will be about 15-17c. But we all know how many times they get it right.

Kitty's right Ali! I recall one year about 1995 when I was in my three-seasons sleeping bag plus a blanket and a blow-up lilo underneath and another blanket over the top and had clothes on and I was still freezing!
The mist was rising from the stream ... it was freezing fog in Sept and the Irish whiskey gave only temporary relief. In fact the more you drank, the colder I got ... I wasn't even sharing the sleeping bag with someone warmer ...
Ughhhh! It still makes me shivver just thinking about it. So let's pray for no wall-to-wall sunshine during the daycloud cover at night and cloud cover at night.

If you've never camped at Bromyard before, make sure that you have lots of space between you and the ground (from which the cold rises up and grabs you). If it's wet during the day, you're probably OK, but if it's sunny there's no cloud cover.

there is a field further on from the official site (towards Bromyard Down & Stourport) but I can't say if it always does business, I have seen it many years and expect it will this year). Plenty of pubs doing sessions even if it is not every pub and more than one session in each as it always is in out memory - but that is my enduring memory of the mid 80's on Saturday.

Linda and I don't look like making it to Bromyard this year. I'll still try and remember to have a drink to the memory of Fred Jordan - to mark all the pints we've bought each other in the past. I'm sure that if Fred's spirit is attached to any festival it'll be Bromyard.
