Subject: what music

Ok! lets see who's up on what! I am going "home" next week.It is just a year since my last visit. Home is Dublin, Ireland. Now, I am a regular player, but am slowly losing touch with what's happening in the folk music scene. My repertoire of CDs is dwindling, and I don't know what ot be looking for. What I need is help! My type of singing music is on the lines of Dolores Keane,Frances Black and so. Lots of old Percy French, some classics and the like. The tune stuff is as always with a few of Sharon Shannon thrown in. Can any of you give me few tips, what I should go looking for in CDs or Casettes. What's new and interesting or is there any new stuff on those lines out? Thanks in advance Brioc

I just read that Sinead O'Connor's new CD "Sean Nos Nua" (The New Old Style) features traditional songs in new arrangements. Musicians include Donal Lunny and Sharon Shannon.

You might search for news of my fave Irish band, Kila. Their last album "Lemonade and Buns" came out in 2000, so they're about due for a new one.

Then there's Glasgow singer/songwriter Eddi Reader, an absolute gem; Kate Rusby is great; Malinky with Karine Polwart have a new one I'm looking forward to hearing; Capercaillie singer Karen Matheson just released her second solo album "A Time to Fall".

Have fun in Dublin!
Michael

You might have trouble finding a lot of that scottish stuff in Dublin. Best bet is to go to Claddagh Records in Cecilia Street (behind the Central Bank near Temple Bar).

Niamh Parsons has a new album out called "Heart's Desire" which you'll probably like if you like the singer's you mention. There's a lot of instrumental stuff out this year, I think the bast of these is the Danu CD "All things considered" which not only has great tunes but some wonderful singing from Ciaran O Geallbhan. And there's a new Altan CD and one from Liz and Yvonne Keane who were members of Sharon's band the Woodchoppers and are excellent fiddlers.
