Subject: Devon, Glorious Devon From: BC Date: 06 Sep 02 - 07:12 PM For more than 35 years I have had two and a half verses (plus the chorus) for 'Devon, Glorious Devon' - a great song. Can anyone please provide any more? |
Subject: RE: Devon, Glorious Devon From: greg stephens Date: 06 Sep 02 - 07:37 PM Alas, no, I only know the first bit. But if you care to start a Devon sub-group of Mudcat like the Hull boys I'll be glad to drop in(unless you're from south Devon, in which case too bad, I'm from Barnstaple). |
Subject: RE: Devon, Glorious Devon From: Wotcha Date: 06 Sep 02 - 08:45 PM I went to school down Tivvy ... I get back once every couple of years ... if you start something let me know! Cheers, Brian |
Subject: RE: Devon, Glorious Devon From: John MacKenzie Date: 08 Sep 02 - 11:28 AM I love the lines As crumpy as a lump of lead Be a loaf without good leaven But the yeast Mother England, do make for her bread Is Devon, is Devon glorious Devon Giok |
Subject: RE: Devon, Glorious Devon From: Nigel Parsons Date: 08 Sep 02 - 11:37 AM Three and a half verses are Here Nigel (35 mls ENE of Foreland Point, Devon) |
Subject: RE: Devon, Glorious Devon From: Liz the Squeak Date: 08 Sep 02 - 03:16 PM Huh, it's only so beautiful because Dorset's too small to hold it all! Dorset is even more beautiful than Ireland - saw a CD yesterday of "Oirish" songs, a collection of songs that was so Oirish it would make your teeth itch... all nicely packaged on a picture of Gold's Hill, Shaftesbury, Dorset! Remember the Hovis bread adverts of the 1970's? That boy and the long walk up the hill? Couldn't be farther from Yorkshire and still stay in mainland England... it's the same hill in Dorset!! LTS |
Subject: Lyr Add: DEVON, GLORIOUS DEVON (Sir Edward German) From: Joe Offer Date: 08 Sep 02 - 05:38 PM We've been getting too many links and too few lyrics lately. Links die, lyrics live forever. These are the lyrics Nigel linked to. -Joe Offer- DEVON, GLORIOUS DEVON Written by Sir Edward German (1862 - 1936, born Edward German Jones). Combe and tor, green meadow and lane, birds on the waving bough. Beetling cliffs by the surging main, rich red loam for the plough. Devon's the font of the finest blood that braces England's breed. Her maidens fair as the apple bud and her men are men indeed. When Adam and Eve were dispossed of the garden, hard by Heaven, they planted another one down in the West - 'twas Devon, 'Twas Devon, glorious Devon. Spirits to old world heroes wake by river and cove and hoe. Grenville, Hawkins, Raleigh, Drake and a thousand more we know. To every land the wide World oer some slips of the old stock roam. Leal friends in peace, dread foe in war, with hearts still true to home. Old England's Counties, by the sea, from East to West are seven. But the gem to that fair galaxy 'tis Devon, 'tis Devon, glorious Devon. Dorset, Somerset, Corn'all, Wales may envy the likes of we. For the flower of the West, the first, the best, the pick o' the bunch us be. Squab pie, junket and cider brew, richest of cream from the cow. What'd old England wi'out 'em do, and where'd un be to now? As crumpy as a lump o' lead be a loaf wi'out good leaven. But the yeast mother England did use for her bread be Devon, be Devon, glorious Devon. |
