Phiddle, If I leave bags of dry cat food where the cats can get at them, they tend to be torn open in a flash, even if there is food in the food dishes. I have to put the stuff into sealed plastic containers.

I'm sure it has come up before on some thread, but my old set of cats (long gone but still missed) Witchy Poo and Shadow, would always yowl along whenever I sang. Like all youse, I couldn't tell if they were joining the chorus or complaining. The last boyfriend's two dogs did, too. Woof along, that is. My current cats are indifferent to singing but decide it's lap time if I want to practice guitar. They're all just individual.

They ALL have always loved the sound of the can opener, however.

Ay-up Micca my darling Merlyn the Mognificent is lovely she make all our guests welcome and says hello to them waiting for them to stroke and pet her.........ermm she just has a bottom burp problem.

Merlyn likes to chatter to the birds and sing to the moon......it can be quite annoying at night! She lives in a household that has all types of music playing for 60% of the day. She likes Jake Thackray and Flanders and Swann!!!

Re cats' musical preferences, for some reason all the cats I've had have responded especially well to "Edelweiss" as a song whistled to call them to come to the door or into a room. I've tried other tunes, but they seem to like "Edelweiss."

Oh come now, certainly not! No cat of MY acquaintence past or present would EVER do anything so dog-like as pass gas! Lick yucky body parts, yes. Spray in inappropriate places, of course! but FART? Even the scuzziest cat I have ever known (El Gato de las Pulgas, Pulgas for short) who was as crude a kitty as one could meet (raised in the wilds of San Francisco's Mission District and gray with fleas when we first met) would ever be so uncouth!

Yeah I had a dog who got real PO'd (she actually nipped at my jean's cuff) when I picked up the guitar and started playing "I had a dog and his name was Blue" (It was a "I don't want to hear about your past relationships" sort of snit, I think.)

How do you know you are ignoring him? If you play on, does he leave? Maybe he WAS asking for more.... Presumably such a well trained pet as yourself could interpret whether he was going to crap in the case or not, in which case, I think you have it sussed.

Now all you have to do is stop buying food in cans he can't manage, and your job is done..... : )

PS Max the broken cat is on the mend - and crafty as all getout... he was trotting round the garden on 3 good legs and one slightly wobbly, until he spotted me looking out the window at him, when he immediately became tripod cat with 3 wobbly legs and one that resembled a sock full of custard. There go his privileges! And to think I was feeding him biccies on the sofa and carrying him out to the food bowls! Little bugger!

The cat sits by my feet as I play concertina, and when I stop he speaks to me. It's not the "Anguish" wail, it's not the "Feed me" noise, it's not the "Let me out or I'll crap on your carpet again" howl, it's something unique. It either means "Play some more" or "For God's sake stop that row". If I knew which, it would be a great step forward in trans-species communication. As it is, I ignore the bugger.

Maximus Gluteous started noisily washing his bits during God save the King, huzzah! A republican cat!!! Either that or he (like most of the audience by the looks and the lipreading) didn't like Brittens' arrangement.... everyone's a critic.

He seemed to like the Black Sabbath I had on this morning, he tried to stick his head in the tape deck - well, the speakers are high on the wall and he's got a dicky knee where I broke him last week.....

(It was an accident, he landed awkwardly and ripped his crustacean ligaments or something..... I've been paying ever since....).

Our resident tabby seems to ignore Sheryl and I when we trot out guitars. Plus she's a shy critter and likely to flee into the bedroom when we have sings here.

A friend's tabby had similar reactions to the "Jingle Cats" CD as described here. In this case, I believe the cat was stalking around the living room, ears twitching, sniffing at the air with a puzzled look. "I hear another cat, but I can't smell them! What's going on here?"

Burke! I had a kitty that used to do Exactly the Same Thing! He loved the whistle.

My other kitty, who is still with us, hates the whistle. He didn't like the violin when I first started playing, but he's all right with it now. He doesn't seem to care one way or the other.

Our old dog, Zenith, barked at Mister's guitar the first time he got it out. She was only about 4 months old at the time.

I had a budgie who really liked Michael Martin Murphey's first Cowboy Songs album. He'd just chirp right along with it.

One cat doesn't seem to respond much to aural stimuli, another likes the sound of running water, and the third really likes the harp. She didn't respond much to my Celtic harp, but after I got the concert harp she'd always be in the room when I practiced, lying on her back. I think she liked the vibrations she could feel through the floor. (Dog likes harp as well.)

Years ago my sister had a Siamese who would come sit next to the speakers every time my dad put on his favorite album...My Fair Lady. My own cats never seemed to be interested one way or another. On the other hand, my corgis have very specific taste. They love to hear me play the guitar, 2nd best is OP playing guitars, then any stringed instrument. Harmonicas are definitely not on, however, and they will drown them out every time.

They appear out of nowhere for music, lounging on piano tops and in instrument cases. My personal favourite is the yearly listen to "Jeremy Brown and Jeanie Teale" at Christmastime. The first year I played it, the dog parked himself in front of the speaker and listened to it. One of the fairies is named Angus, and so is the dog. I imagine his perception of the story is something along the lines of: "Blah, blah, blahblah, blah blahblah, Angus (dog wags tail) blah blah blah Angus (wags again) blah..." The cats walk by and swat him for being such a yutz.

The cat doesn't seem to be musical any more (I used to think it was), though it won't tolerate very loud music. I don't generally crank up the volume unless I need to hear it downstairs in the shop, a long way from the stereo. That makes him hide for hours. I'll need a bigger stereo, or patch it through the p.a. to make him vanish altogether, or step in front of a truck.

The dog however seems to like the blues. At this moment I'm listening to Ralph Vaughan Williams and she's nowhere to be found. If I put Stevie Ray Vaughan on she'd be at my feet drooling...the aural equivalent of rolling in a dead salmon. Swelling strings seem to freak her out, much like her first encounter with a bear. The first time she heard pipe organ music she came right up to me and cocked her head to one side as if to say "what the fuck's that?"... kinda like she looked when she first saw a flying squirrel. I think she could learn to like the pipe organ.

I like the "Phluphi" name too, in a similar vein I once came across a reference to a dog called "Phydeaux"..it was a candidate for "the most pretentious name for a pet"

Mungo likes rock and classical, but I think he should buy his own records. Cerys likes watching classical music, but I suspect that this is because of all the bows waving around, other than that, she couldn't give a toss.

I used to have a cat that would actually come in from outside to stop me from playing the whistle ( loud complaining followed by biting and scratching if it didn't stop quick enough ) she would then leave in a huff, as if to say "you're only doing it to annoy me...".

Did you know that cats read through their bottoms? I can't see why else they would keep sitting on what I'm trying to read.......

My cat Phluphi likes to hear my wife sing. The Mrs. has a very nice soprano voice.

One the other side, the cat will run and hide under the bed at the very sight of me getting the fife out to play. The fiddle the cat has learned to ignore. But as for me singing, if I sing something softly and acapella, Phluphi does the head butting thing and purrs.

My 7 cats go nuts over the Jingle Cats CD I have...but I think they are acting with aggression, believing a very talented Tom is invading their space! It's funny to watch all of them get poofy tail and walking like Frankenstein around in the room with the CD player.

The only instrument I have they seem to like is the harp. So much so, I have to keep it put away where they can't get to it. If I leave it out, I'll wake up in the night to the sounds of kitty compositions on the strings.

One of my cats used to love it when I was restringing my dulcimers or my guitar. The sight of the shiny metal wire twisting around in the air used to really get him (;->)wound up! He also liked hearing dulcimer music.

Every time I blow on a tin whistle my cat jumps in my lap & gives me head butts on the chin. I don't know if he loves or hates it, but I can't play with him around.
