Hi,

You will have to give us, more lyrics or a rough idea of who sang it.

Richard Marx did "Hazard" a few years back, I reckon they sound pretty similar..... but he's not a "she".

Now before all you peple start to complain that this isn't folk music again. I reckon Shaun Colvin could be considered modern folk.

then there's "Sunny don't go away, I'm here all alone...' Sung by Mary Black.

Well, here's a link to a RealAudio clip from "Sunny Came Home. Can't say that I can think of any song that's similar. I guess I like some of Shawn Colvin's stuff OK, but I wasn't very impressed with her as a performer. She opened at a concert I attended a couple years ago, and she was just plain nasty and a bit profane. She said it was because she had PMS, but I wish she would have just suffered in silence - I didn't particularly care to know about it. If she was feeling bad, she should have just sung her songs and refrained from insulting the audience.

There was a fine example of "Sunny" by Mary plus Emmy Lou Harris and (I think) Dolores Keane on the "Bringing IT All Back Home" 2 CD set of the history of Irish Music.

It has been out of print in Australia for many years. Anyone else around the globe aware if it is in stock elsewhere. I have a sneaking suspicion that it may have also been released as 1 CD only.

Any clues please?

Regards John

Hi John,

Did you see that show recently on SBS-TV on Irish music in America - about 2 weeks ago - which showed Black/Keane/Harris singing Sonny? It also had John Prine singing about Mr Peabody's Mine, and lots of other classics.

The album Bringing It All Back Home that John mentions is still available, I located it at Irish Music Warehouse, and also at Hummingbird, which produced the video mentioned. I don't have my copy at hand at the moment, but I know it was a BBC production. You can see a track listing at the IMW site, just click on compilation albums. (I looked but did not find it at Elderly, CD Now and Music Boulevard)

Alison, the Sonny to which you refer is "Sonny's Dream", written by Newfoundland singer/songwriter Ron Hynes. I think I posted the lyrics here some time ago in response to a request.

Starts off:

Sonny lives on a farm, in wide open space
You can take off your sneakers, you can give up the race

He recently released a CD which included a new version of this song, as well as a new version of his other hit, The St. John's Waltz. He had originally recorded both when he was with The Wonderful Grand Band. Didn't know that Mary Black had done "Sonny's Dream".

Thanks Dale and Helen. If the re-broadcast of the series does not flush out some local supplies, I will order from Ireland.

Hi,

The Marry Black bersion I had heard was the one off "Bringing it all back home."

they have since edited this series of programmes. It was shown again fairly recently, but was called something like 'The Irish in America." Maybe they've renamed the CD too.

Hi,

Sonny's dream was "imported" to Europe and somewhat extended/altered by Scottish singer Hamish Imlach, and his recording is still my favorite. However, other good versions are Christy Moore's, Mary Black's solo version(on the Woman's Heart CD) and Jean Readpath's.

Cheers
Håvard

"Sonny's Dream" is a great song - but it doesn't sound anything like Shawn Colvin's "Sunny Came Home." I wonder what song it was that the original poster was asking for.

I believe it is a song sung by Paula Cole.

I think the original poster was pulling our leg by trying to get people to babble on given such a useless start. It appears to have worked very well.

on the topic of "Sonny's Dream," I recently heard that Michael Jackson has bought the rights to it from the guy that stiffed Hynes for them. Any confirmation or contradiction on that? Maybe it was just the original poster of this thread who told me that and was just pulling my leg again. Who knows.

Sean

Hadn't heard about Michael Jackson. Hynes only recently re-recorded it. He's not a bad songwriter, actually, and he still performs in Canada.

Joe, give Shawn Colvin another chance. I don't doubt the truthfulness of your account, but it's very surprising. I've never heard her but she was warm and sweet and I was sorry when she went home!

Well, Dani, I have to admit that it must be very hard to open a concert for a well-known performer. I can't remember if it was Nanci Griffith or Lyle Lovett that Shawn opened for since the concerts were on the same weekend and in the same location. Whatever, it was obvious that the crowd had come to see the main performer and that many hadn't even heard of Shawn Colvin. With all the commotion of people finding their seats and socializing and yelling to old friends across the lawn, it was hard for anyone to pay attention to the performance. No wonder Shawn's PMS got to her.
I've gotten stuck a few times, trying to sing to an audience that wasn't listening, and it's a devastating experience. Most of my singing these days is in church, where I have a captive audience and people have to pay attention. Pretty good racket I've got now, I'd say.
