From: curmudgeon

It's almost that time again. The Third Annual Portsmouth Martitime Folk Festival will be taking place on Saturday and Sunday, 28 & 29 September, up here on the banks of the Piscataqua; workshops, programs, concert, and lots of singing, not to mention, an "embarrassment of concertinas."

The most recent addition to the program is the Shanty/Forebitter Singaround that Linn and I will be hosting at the Press Room on Saturday afternoon from 3:30 to 5:30. You can attend the other Saturday events and still have time to sing before the concert at 7:30. I really hope to have as many Mudcatters there as possible, ie., Roll and Go, Barry Finn, et al., to help us locals out.

Feel free to post comments and queries to this thread and also go to the Folk Horizons Website

Hope to see lots of you there -- Tom

We'll be in Boston earlier in the week but I'm sure we will have left by Saturday. See you another time. I enjoyed meeting you and being at that one Press Room session very much.

All the best,

Be well -- Tom

Tom hasn't pointed out that there has been a recent addition to the Saturday events -- a sing-around at The Press Room between the afternoon events and the evening concert (with John Roberts & Tony Barrand, NexTradition and Jeff Warner). The Press Room is also a good place to grab a meal before the concert.

Last year after the afternoon performance and the evening concert Animaterra, CET, various representatives of Roll and Go, Jeri, and, of course, Tom and I gathered for supper at the Press Room before the evening concert, but in between mouthfuls and after eating, we ended up doing some singing anyway. This year it will be "official."

So who's going to be able to make it?

Linn

Hey Tom not much to tell about smithing. Took to it breifly close to 20 yrs ago, always planned on building a steel cruiser. Never did build it (maybe some day still) but never got rid of my anvils, vises, ddid have to get another forge though. My son started showing an interest is the equiptment laying around so we're gonna start her up again. Have done a very little recently but we're on the go now & he's cracking to get o with it. Barry, Tom has a forge in his basement. Of course, if he fired it up he'd probably kill a half million spiders.

Actually Micca, I have two forges. One is a crude redone , the other is a fully reconditioned model that I've never had the opportunity to use. I also have two anvils, a small one and a LARGE one.

I took a course in smithing some quarter century ago with the intention of making blades, but just never had the time or the materials.

We'd really love to have you back for a longer visit whenever you can make it -- Tom

Just come back from a local do and caught up on a bit of (internet)reading.
Probably too late for this festival but...
Alice is wonderful, she's visited us in the UK 4-5 times and toured with us this summer in the States. She's dark haired and hangs out a lot with Gina from Shipping News. She doesn't like to admit it but has a lovely voice and her renedition of Sailortown is fantastic. I know she has gone to Portsmouth
SO
If anyone recognises her just give her a hug from the Baggies and me!
Of course if it's not her you could end up making a lot of people smile which is great too!

Hi again Madam Gashee, My son & I just got home from the Press Room session in Portsmouth (NH). Yup, Alice did arrive, safe & sound & in the good care of Sarah. She'll be up for the weekend, as usuall she's bringing the sunshine with her (it's raining now but it won't be in the AM). Sorry, I didn't know Alice was the Alice you were asking after & I didn't put it together until I just read your post now & when you mentioned Gina I knew right off. Bit slow up here, I do know I'll be running into her tomorrow all over the festival & I'll pass along your hugs. I've heard her sing before, yes & she's really very good too, she is hard to nail down for a song. Actually I had mentioned the same to her this evening & asked if she'd get that voice out & start singing, "not unil I get it down". Well I hope that's soon. See Ya, say hi to the Baggies & I hope all of you get back this way. Barry

THAT Alice!!! I'm at least as slow as Barry, as I just now figured it out. (Tiny little light bulb went on and everything!) I met her at the PMFF two years ago. She did a song in the pub sing-around and I agree she has a lovely voice.

I gave her a hug from me, but I'll give her another from you tomorrow.

Great session tonight, by the way. I was afraid I was going to wear my voice out before the festival officially started, but I'm just a tiny bit hoarse and ought to be fine by morning. Barry, did you notice we seemed to have a whole section of small dark-haired women with great voices?

Tyler Buck & I will be there Sunday. Sorry to miss you Barry...

I met Curmudgeon, Bat Goddess, & Jeri at last year's PMF Singaround, and at Barry's house. And I met Alice & the Baggies & maybe that was Madame Gashee I met when they were in Boston/Lincoln/Concord/Walden Pond.

I haven't been getting around much lately. Haven't even had time to be a mudcat lurker, let alone an occasional poster. Just checked in to see who'd be at the PMF.

I'm not sure but I might spend most of my time Sunday at the Singaround. If there's anyone you recommend I hear on Sunday, I might be able to tear myself away from the pub...

Cheers! Judy

Hi, Judy! --

Let's see, the Paddy Westers, John Roberts & Tony Barrand, Roy and Mary Clinging, Bob Webb and Bruce MacIntyre will rotate through the Sing-around on Sunday, and Tom and I will get a few songs in fore and aft as well as keeping the sing-around moving along.

Of course, I've managed to come down with a cold (so if I don't hug anyone -- that's why!). Still had most of my voice last night (what a great session!) but I don't know what shape it will be in by this afternoon. (It's mostly hitting my nose right now -- I'm trying to stop it in its tracks, or at least salvage my voice for the weekend.)

I'm free all day today and will probably be at "African-Americans in the Age of Sail" with Valerie Cunningham, Dr. Mary Malloy, Jeff Warner and the NexTradition and the Press Room singing. Haven't quite figured out just HOW to be at both...

And Linn, I either have your bl**dy cold or my allergies are having a histamine party. Probably the latter...I hope.

Jeri -- it's too soon for you to have *MY* cold (and I didn't kiss you anyway!!!) -- it didn't manifest itself until yesterday morning. Prolly didn't even come from the same source (since I've been rooming with Sinsull mid-week -- or maybe it's Kendall's fault, keeping us up to all hours scraping glue off his bedroom walls).

Speaking of scheduling good stuff at the same time, it looks like 'Mudge and I will be missing Fred Dodge again this year.

I'm off to give the cat his insulin shot and bring my car home from the shop before we can head to Portsmouth. See you there!

I'm not sure my voice has recovered from the work-out I've been giving it out in California and Oregon, that final session in Portland, OR, at the Elephant and Castle is still resonating.

I'll try to connect with Naemanson and see if we can get in the same pool with a car or van. Watch out for those colds, though, especially if they get into the chest; Judy's got a nasty one that she's been trying to shake for a week.

What an incredible sing-around Saturday afternoon! The really wonderful thing about it was introducing new people to sea and folk music. The people who came to sing, of course, were familiar with the repertoire, but we sucked in people who had never heard sea music before.

Even before the concertina workshop and African-American sailor seminar were over, singers started grabbing chairs around the table in the back of the pub. Before long, festival performers started arriving. The rest of the pub was populated by tourists (and some regulars), some of whom had no familiarity with the genre -- let alone the concept of a bunch of people getting together in a public place and singing their hearts out.

I was "cornered" and questioned by one fellow who had wandered into The Press Room with his wife -- he said he'd been interested in folk music years ago, but had drifted away. Well, he's back -- he and his wife came to the concert later and had a grand time. And I sat next to another couple at the concert who had come over because of accidently wandering into The Press Room for a pint and supper and had so much fun listening to the harmonies (it's pretty impressive, having that many massed voices) and trying to figure out the words to the choruses so they could join in. They'll be back -- not only to the Festival next year, but probably to the Friday session at The Press Room, since they're from not too far away.

NexTradition and John Roberts and Tony Barrand (plus host Jeff Warner who also gave us a few songs -- even got his brother Garrett, another fine singer, to join in the concert finale) put on a wonderful show.

Everyone will be back today -- performers rotating between (FREE) venues downtown such as the Athenaeum, Cafe Brioche, Bagel Works and our sing-around at Jack Quigley's pub. There is also more music on stage at Strawbery Banke Museum where it is also the Annual Brewer's Festival and Fall Fest.

See you there!

Judging by my level of fatigue, it was a GREAT festival!

One strange thing...there was a woman sitting a couple rows in front of us who seemed to watch and listen to folks in the audience as much as those on stage. It irritated me somewhat, until I realised she had probably never been to any concert where the audience sang so loudly! She smiled through the whole thing.

Whe workshop on African Americans in the Age of Sail was outstanding. A woman brought her 15 year old daughter and a friend, and was afraid her daughter was going to complain afterwards because the workshop was mostly lecture. Nope - they loved the enthusiasm of Mary Malloy, the presenter, as well as the fascinating material.

Madame Gashee, Alice got hugs from both Barry and I on your behalf. I think she might have had a good time. ;-)

Sorry to have missed this one, Amigos; the old circulatory issues in the right foot have been acting up lately again - not as bad, but doing the same sort of thing it was doing just before it "blew out" (not a pretty sight) last year, and had me hobbling around with a cane, with both mind and body running at about the 97-year-old level. It has been such a hassle at work that they finally "canned" me in June, and I currently seem to be essentially unemployable.

I even had to beg off of a Parade in York on Saturday with the 3rd Maine Fife-&-drum Corps as the old foot just ain't up to marching, and I fugured that there would be plenty of hoofing around the streets of Portsmouth involved in the Festival. Have seriously considered just letting the darned leg rot off and whittling up a wooden peg - should go well with the shanty theme, eh?.

"Aunt Martha", the two "Hooligans" (Yorkshire Terrier & Toy Poodle crossbreeds) and I instead took the RV touring around the White Mts. of NH, camping out Sat. night in Shelburne.

Any clues as to when / where there might be another Portland-area "Shanty Hoot"? Ain't we abouts due fer one, Mates?

Uncle Jaque: Charley's trying to run another shanty party to ground. I think he's targeting November. Captain Bunker has his new barn to christen and he figures a shanty party would be just the thing.

I had a great time on Sunday. I would have been there on Saturday but I had to work. I was very impressed with Mary Malloy and Stuart Frank. I have heard their names and had little snippets of information but never have I had the opportunity to hear them. I scuttled right down to the product table and bought their CD, Pirate Songs.

Stuart Frank made an interesting comment. He had seen a theme park called Pirate World. He said that would be like someone in the future building Al Qaida World. The pirates were a bunch of dirty cutthroats. Funny how attitudes change with a few hundred years...

Anyway, I saw some old friends and sang a lot of songs. I even got to stand up and lead a song. Pretty cool.

Oh, and I sold some CDs. Thanks to all my friends who bought them. And thanks to all my friends who didn't want one but were polite enough not to say so.

Nice to hear John Roberts and Tony Barrand again, and it's been too long sing I've heard Mary Malloy and Stuart Frank. I ran across an old Folkways recording that Molly and William Pint collaborated on some 30 years ago, which included recordings and excellent notes from former sailors on the West Coast; I'm looking forward to reviewing it in more detail.

The infastructure of this year's festival was vastly improved over previous years with great tents, excellant sound management, better pub venues for singing without sound, food and drink vendors. Nice work, organizers.

Wish I could have joined the pub singing on Saturday.

Cheerily,

Charley Noble
