Mister and I are playing at a friend's wedding in a couple of weeks, and by golly, I don't know what to wear! It's in the middle of the afternoon. Mister has a suit; that's no problem. I have a gray suit that's probably too warm; a brown suit that's really nice but probably too dark for the afternoon, and a red suit with faux leopard cuffs and collar that is SPLENDID but I just don't know about that one - people need to be looking at the lovely bride, and not at me.

If it were after 5, it would be easy. But what to do? Any ideas?

Thanks ---- KFC

Church wedding? Business wear, but lighter, looser. Or professional musicians' black, with white shirt.

oh good. Fashion advice. If the red suit is sort of a classic style, I'd wear it. They'll look at the bride anyway. If, however, it is sort of come-hither, I would wear the brown with a pretty pastel blouse and keep the jacket off if it is warm or you think it is too dark.

It's in a little chapel on the grounds of the Hermitage (home of US President Andrew Jackson for y'all who ain't from around here).

The red suit isn't come-hither, it's more of a business suit with a funky twist. I just didn't want anyone to think I was trying to take any attention away from the bride.

The brown is pretty nice - I have a great scarf that goes with it... although, since I'm fiddling, the scarf may not be such a good idea.

Really, I'm looking for an excuse to buy something new! :-)

None of those outfits will do; completly hopeless! You'll have to buy something new!

hope that helps! *grin*

Buy somethig new. Everyone else in the wedding party did! Comfy to play in, and feels good to wear, all-season.

Remember, I'm the pastor's wife. Weddings, funerals... I go to a few. *G* I have a winter outfit and a summer one, and don't use them for anything else so they are always ready to roll! *G*

So that would be official permission to shop.

Well, I can do that, but then we're back to the question of What. The only other wedding we did was a Civil War wedding and we were all in period dress. That made it easy.

I didn't know if there were certain etiquette rules for what musicians are supposed to wear at a wedding. I guess middle of the afternoon is less formal than evening, blahblahblah... I have plenty of black but I wanted to be a little more festive than that. And then there's the quandary of the Tennessee weather - in October, anything could happen. I could plan for the red suit, and it could be 90 outside...

I did find a blue jacket & dress thing in a catalog. If I can't dig anything suitable out of my closet, I may give that a try. :-)

Dark blue suit, cream blouse, modest jewelry, sensible but pleasant looking shoes. OK?

Oh, goody, my kind of thread! Not the red suit!!!!!! I think a dress in a blue (pastel, chambray, navy, royal) with a jacket would be super. That way, if it is hot, the jacket comes off and if it is cool, the jacket stays on. You look professional and neat either way. Other colors would be a dark beige or perhaps light brown or gray would be nice. You could pick a rose if that is in your color chart or perhaps a nice peach or even a forest green. What color is the wedding party wearing? I would suggest that you stay sort of neutral so you don't clash. I love doing weddings so have a good time and relax. After all, everyone is there to see the bride and groom.

Don't pick wedding party colors tho. And Hardi never feels he plays well in a suit coat, so you probably won't either. A soft good-quality jersey skirt and tunic would be great. Navy is nice but so is dove grey or charcoal, depending which "side" you are on. *G*

Is the bride's mother or the maid of honor someone you would feel comfortable shopping with? They could help you be dresse dup enough for what they have planned for the event and the setting, but not too dressed up.

What are you playing? Does it suggest anything to help set the mood? Just consider it a costume-- how would you dress someone else if she were playing this one?

We're going over to see the bride & groom tomorrow to talk about the music... I was hoping to have my clothes figured out by then!

You know what, though? Out of all the weddings I've ever been to, I can't tell you what the musicians were wearing. Except the bagpiper in kilt my friends had a couple of years ago...

The dress and jacket / jersy drape top idea seems the way to go. Colours, anything you feel comfortable being in front of people in for long periods of time ( sometimes I feel great in something glam, but there can be a bit of a "pumpkin" feeling after a while ).

Deffinitely something new................ : )

And cotton bike shorts under a skirt are mighty nice to stay comfy for a long time.

So I said to the best man at this Scottish Weding Ceilidh we were playing for 'Just imagine if eight ladies wore the same dress to a wedding?'-Most hire shop kilts are Hunting Stuart.

Ever wonder why you've not had any wedding invitations for a while, Trevor?

Good luck, Kim!

Kim

Go shopping - I'm sure anything you find that's suitable will do for another occasion. In England we have the unpredictable weather problem too, so the usual strategy is to dress in layers that can be removed or added when appropriate (though I doubt whether removal to the extent suggested by Amergin would ever be appropriate at someone else's wedding before the guests had gone home).

Have fun looking

Kitty

I found a silk dress & jacket set on clearance in one of my favorite catalogs, and it appears they have my size. I have plenty of time to get it and return it if it won't do. Everything I have in my closet seems so....... boring!

Thanks everyone!

Good for you!

Silk can be very warm-- may want a cotton slip underneath.

I've always thought that a vest looks nice when the jacket has to come off. Don't be suprised if you can find a good deal on a mans vest at a thrift shop that can contrast with a suit. You'll never be able to match a navy vest with a navy suit however. There are just too many variations on the same color. Go for a contrast.

It's official - you HAVE to go shopping. Tell Mister we said so.
