Hi, folks,

We attended a concert last night & heard Scott Alarik for the first time. What a pleasure that was! He is not only tremendously funny, but is a caring, intelligent man who brings a wealth of information to share about the music he performs. He did a real groaner, a song about fresh water whaling in Minnesota that he said Si Kahn wrote for him. Does anyone happen to have the lyrics? He also performed a very wonderful, serious song of his own, "May They Be Blessed." It is on his cd, "-30-." although it was our 1st exposure to Scott, I certainly hope it will not be our last. He is great!

I found it with Supersearch. For future reference, I looked for kahn and whale. That "and" is great for finding unique combinations of words when one word alone (such as "whale") would bring up a pile of threads.

While in Portland-West I was recently musing about this song with Mary Benson, from whom Mark first heard the song, and she also confirmed that Si Kahn is the composer. Which version is Scott singing now?

I believe it was the version Mark posted, but that's only on the memory of one hearing. It was the spoken lead-in that was really a groaner! Scott was great, a true pleasure to hear.

BTW, we'll be in Maine next weekend, camping. I hope it won't be too cold!

Scott is working on a book of his life in things folk. It should be a great remembrance. As a folk music writer and critic at the Boston Globe he has produced several of the pages that were a big part of my publicity packet. For that I publicly thank him for those too kind words he wrote back when I was on the road doin' it.

Now I've got to e-mail the man so he can look in here and see what we're saying about him.

Yup, Art, I strongly suggested to Scott that he check out Mudcat. He remembers you mentioning it to him. I was quite impressed when I did a search on his name & saw all the stuff he's been up to. I'm glad our paths finally crossed. I've had time to listen to his cd, -30-. It's a nice one!
