Subject: any info on From: Barry Finn Date: 31 May 98 - 10:14 AM The Old Songs Festival in New York looks pretty good, I've gone to their web site & like what I've read there & who's performing, what I 'd like, is to hear about things for kids (I have an 8 &10 yr old), & how the camping is, is it near the music, is there after hours music & jams at the campsites & opions of the festivals. As a family we hit 1, at best 2 festivals a year, so I'd be looking to opt for what we all would think is our best shot. Thanks Barry |
Subject: RE: any info on From: Animaterra Date: 31 May 98 - 10:23 AM I've heardfrom a few sources that all of the above are great; I'm plannig to go for the first time, and I'll be going alone because of complicated family dynamics re. folk fests in general. I'm looking forward to it! |
Subject: RE: any info on From: Susan of DT Date: 31 May 98 - 03:16 PM Camping is on site, but you had better send in for camping now - it won't be available at the gate. There is singing til all hours, either planned at certain locations or in various places in the camping area. |

Subject: RE: any info on From: Barry Finn Date: 02 Jun 98 - 10:17 PM Animaterra, the best thing about the T-shirt, after of course it being a fashion statement, is it helps to pick one another out in a large festival crowd, it also doubles as a great mouth wipe for us drooling singers. Barry |
Subject: RE: any info on From: Charlie Baum Date: 02 Jun 98 - 10:48 PM I've been going to Old Songs every year (save one) since camping began in the third year of the festival. It's a great festival--if you're only going to make it to one or two, let this be one of them (or it!). In the early years, you had to get yuour camping request in early, but a few years ago, they expanded the area allowed for camping, so you can now show up at the gate and get a camping ticket. Camping on site is a little different from some other festivals where the music is so loud you can't sleep--at Old Songs, the campground is divided into zones. (You'll get a map when you get your camping ticket.) At one end of the campground, the music goes on into the night. These people tend to sleep late though, so this part of the campground tend to be fairly quiet at 7 or 8 a.m. Another end has a curfew and goes quiet early. If you've got kids and want to put them to sleep, you might camp in this area. But this area has lots of early risers and the music at this end of the campground starts very early in the morning. Yet another area is quiet all the time. Camp there and then go elsewhere in the campground to sing, and when you get back to your tent, you can sleep. Also, lots of other areas of the festival near the campground are available for music and jamming. This year, the festival is once again going to try an organized sing-around after the evening concert (starting around 11 or 12 p.m.), and there are lots of other places to make music as well. There's a children's area designed for kids--a sandbox, a family-oriented stage, jesters and jugglers all day long. If your children are old enough, you can almost allow them independence here, as long as they know where to find you elsewhere at the festival. I'll see you there. --Charlie Baum |
Subject: RE: any info on From: Barry Finn Date: 03 Jun 98 - 06:03 AM Thanks Charlie, Susan & Animaterra, looks as if we made a great choice for the family all around. Hope to see you all there. Barry |
Subject: RE: any info on From: Barry Finn Date: 18 Jun 98 - 07:40 PM If you're going be sure to check out 'Kat yn't Seil' from the Netherlands, couldn't understand much but their singing is to die for, saw/heard them at Mystic & wouldn't miss them this go round. Caught a small bit of Marge Bruchac, too, at the tail end of a workshop & was impressed even more when she got into the singing session. Hope this is gonna be a dry (no rain) festival, see ya all. The camping is excellant, the music top notch, & there are 4 stages/tents including a children's tent. WEBSITE: www.FalconRidgeFolk.Com See You there! Anne |
