I have been singing this for a few years since I came across the words on an earlier Mudcat post. As soon as I saw them I realised they would fit the tune of 'Highwayman Outwitted', as recorded by Trio Threlfall on Gown of Green. That song is also in The Constant Lovers, with the tune almost the same.
If anyone wants the tune I can email it.

John Mathews, I'm trying to track down an "official" version of this song, both lyrics and tune. So far I have one person's words (which differ from some other versions) and one tune which is a bit dicey.
I gather that June Tabor recorded it, but I don't see it on any of her albums that are available on itunes.
Before I learn it, I'd love to have a correct version.
If you're on this thread (and I know it's a long shot), could you please contact me at mbuechert(at)telus.net?

Now here are the words that I have, from ;–

SITTING IN THE SUN - ORIGINAL SONGS, TUNES, POEMS, STORIES FROM CLEVELAND.
Published in 1992 by Angel Publications, Middlesborough.

There might have been a tune with it but the page is missing!! so I'm not sure.

                I've Forgotten the words.

                by John Lawson

I've often been called on to sing from the floor
I launch into a song that you've all heard before,
Then I suddenly stop! .. You can hear a pin drop….
Is it senile dementia, a loose fitting denture?
La laa la-la la la La laa la-la la la
Ooh no!, I've forgotten the words!
Ooh no!, I've forgotten the words!

I've been practicing this song for days and for days
Nearly drove our lass mad, it's a wonder she stays
On the way here tonight. .. I got all the words right…
But, when I get up here they just seem to disappear …
La laa la-la la la La laa la-la la la
Ooh no!, I've forgotten the words!
Ooh no!, I've forgotten the words!

Is it 'nerves' make my memory fail?
Would it help to relax if I drank some more ale?
Or was it that blond there that made my mind wander?
Three more pints of booze, would just help to confuse !
La laa la-la la la La laa la-la la la
Ooh no!, I've forgotten the words!
Ooh no!, I've forgotten the words!

I apologize now if I've caused you distress
Embarrassed you all when I've got in this mess
There are three verses yet … How they go I forget …
I'll admit defeat now, go back to my seat now
La laa la-la la la La laa la-la la la
Ooh no!, I've forgotten the words!
Ooh no!, I've forgotten the words!

Sorry Susanne, you could be right.
Eric certainly sang it a lot and I believed it was one of his own.

Tobyjug, are you sure about Eric Winter writing 'The Man..'? My info is this:
From the pen of "Paddy Ryan" (Dr. R. E. W. Fisher) written in 1938 when he was a medical student. He recorded the song a year later, with The International, as the first release of the nascent Topic Records. (Jim Lawton, uk.music.folk, 24 Jan)

There was a song written and performed by Eric Winter, a folk fan, socialist journalist and (parody) songwriter, who lived near Clapham Common and was one of the fans of the early Towersey folk club and festival (1970/71). He also wrote "The man who waters the workers' beer".

His song was sung to the tune of "Rosin the bow", and the chorus was:

If I could remember the words (sung as "wer-er-erds)"
If I could remember the words,
I'd sing you ano-other chor-us, if I could remember the words.

I remember this from the late 60s - so it could be what June Tabor sang in a lighter moment. Perhaps another old fart from England like myself can remember more of the verses.

Dave C.

People,

To me it seems highly appropriate that a shit song should have the tune, "The Mucking of Geordie's Byre". Come on! What other tune could one possibly use?

Well, thanks for bringing this thread back to the top, Peter, though to be honest I fail to see what your request has got to do with the subject matter. Or did you maybe post to the wrong thread by mistake? It's happened to the best of us ... Anyway, you might get more attention if you started a new thread. Good luck!

However, this gives me the chance for a late reply to Leadfingers: Hamish Imlach recorded '*S*it' on his last album 'More and Merrier' and credited the words to one Murray Lewis. I suppose that's your friend then.

In April 03 McGrath of Altcar wrote:

"Would you be interested in a recipe for Cumberland Tattie Pot? It is THE meal that accompanies hunting sing-songs in the Lake district. Some claim it was John Peel's favourite food. I'm not surprised. It is delicious. I can also send a lovely song (not in the DT) Which mentions hunting from the old Beagle Inn which is in.... tattie pot lane!"

I have been trying to get hold of the words / music to "the Old Beagle Inn" for years. If anyone out there actually has those I would be extremely grateful if you would contact me.

Many thanks

Linn, here's a link to the tune to "shit": The Mucking of Geordie's Byre. I'll get one in Mudcat MIDIs as soon as I figure out how to upload. I guess it's almost the same as the Westering Home tune in the Digital Tradition. Note the crosslinks above to related threads.
Now, can we get a MIDI for "They Don't Write Em Like That Any More," so I can learn how to upload that one, too?

Is there a tune available for the Hamish Imlach song? I've only got one of his LPs and I don't think it's on it.

Years ago I put together a "Warts and All" tape of our circle and included at least one "Oh shit" verse (that's the technical term) from every one of us.

THEY DON'T WRITE 'EM LIKE THAT ANYMORE - by Jim Matthews

I'll sing you a song, it's not very long
If I can remember the words
If I can remember the words
If I can remember the words.

There was something about a bold sailor
Lately returned to the shore
He'd been sailing around the East Indies
But I don't remember no more.

There was also a fair pretty maiden
Her name it was Nancy I'm sure
She'd been waiting long years for him to return
But she couldn't wait anymore.

There were blackbirds and blacksmiths and thrushes
Singing on every green spray.
Someone wore a black shawl or was it nothing at all
And somehow I'm sure it was May.

Well, he told her of cruel privations
As they rounded the Horn in a gale
But never a word of relations
With cabin boys, male or female.

But putting his hand in his pocket
A handful of broken tokens he chose
And he said to his own darling Jewel
Do you recognize any of those?

Well, our William like all British sailors
Had silver and gold in great store
So wedding bells chimed, to Wild Mountain Thyme
They don't write 'em like that anymore.

Got this from a friend who signs onto Mudcat occasionally as KNITPICK. It's a great song that she said she got from the singing of Carla Sciaky. Hope it's the one you are looking for.

That looks really promising. Can you tell us anything more about it, where you found it, who wrote it, a suggestion for a tune?

IF I CAN REMEMBER THE WORDS

I'll sing you a song and it won't take me long
If I can remember the words
If I can remember the words
If I can remember the words

It's all about a bold sailor
Newly returned to the shore
From sailing the East Indies
But I just can't remember no more

There's also a fair pretty maiden
Her name it was Nancy for sure
She'd waited long time for her sailor
But she just couldn't wait any more

There were blackbirds and blacksmiths and thrushes
All singing on every green spray
Someone wore a black shawl, or was it nothing at all
And somehow I'm sure it was May

Now Nancy had missed her dear sailor
For waiting at home is no fun
And I think that someone was pregnant
But I just can't remember which one

Now the sailor showed great understanding
Nancy she cried quite a lot
He didn't tell all of his secrets
In fact the best bits we both have forgot

But he told her of cruel privations
Whilst rounding the Horn in a gale
But with never a word of relations
With cabin boys, male or female

Then putting his hand in his pocket
A fistful of broken tokens he shows
And he says to his own dearest jewl
Do you recognise any of those?

And somehow I think this bold sailor
Had silver and gold in great store
And wedding bells chimed to Wild Mountain Thyme
They don't write them like that any more

You're not thinking of "The Folksinger's Lament" by David Diamond which has a verse running:

There are ninety-two verses, I'll stop and explain,
For I learned them this morning with infinite pain;
I'll just mumble the ones I've forgotten again,
And 'tis not what I'd sing 'twas I sober.

Cheerily,

Subject: Lyr Add: OH SHIT! I'VE FORGOTTEN THE WORDS
From: A Wandering Minstrel
Date: 10 Oct 02 - 05:15 PM

Are you possibly thinking of "Oh S**t I've forgotten the words" as
sung by Hamish Imlach?

I knew it just fine when I got up to sing
but now I just cannot remember a thing
A memory like mine is a hell of a thing
Oh S**t I've forgotten the words

ch: On a Packet of fags I had written them down
But I threw it away as I came into town
and now I am feeling a bit of a clown
Oh S**t I've forgotten the words

I Know it began with a morning in May
but the rest of the lyric's just faded away
and now I'm stuck here and I've nothing to say
Oh S**t I've forgotten the words

The last time I sang it It went down a treat
dogs were howling it out in the street
And I spilt beer all over me feet
Oh S**t I've forgotten the words

(there is another verse but ironically, I can't remember it at the moment)
Tune: The Mucking of Geordie's Byre

Does any body remember the words to a song called "If I could remember the words" I heard June Tabor singing it in the seventies at Loughborough. The songs lyrics are about ... forgetting the words of songs.I can remember the tune....I just can't remember the words - How ironic.
