Many of us still remember LJC with great fondness. It was like talking to Oor Wullie himself at times, something I always delighted in.

If you listen to his song Tribute to Newfoundland found on mudcat guitar ..u might feel you do just a little bit. John wrote that song ...and if any of you are wondering why he sings of Ireland instead of Scotland as he was a scotsman.......he said...Scotland didnt rhyme!!!..LOL

Ebbie...I always imagine him harrassing the mermaids...or off to Italy to have coffee...and watching over all of us...having a huge amount of enjoyment....
so maybe ya arent far wrong...lol

Ps...I have always felt the serendipities in life are life's way of having a laugh at our expense...lol

I love the little serendipities of life. I often think of Little John when I'm immersed in the Cat and literally just the other day Jacqui C started a thread where, of course, ljc's name and persona came up and was dwelt upon. And now here he is back. I sometimes wonder if - and suspect it is true - those we have 'lost' are just out of sight somewhere enjoying us hugely.

OH..on another note..I was speaking with Mrs Barr..and she was very touched by what I had to tell her and was very pleased I was able to get Tribute to Newfoundland on CD. She asked me to say thank you. She feels it would be too emotional to read all of this now after all this time..and I think each and every one of us will understand this. She remembers well how so many of you phoned her and extended your sympathies as many of you knew she didnt use a computer..and some of you phoned whether yu knew or not...you all know what I mean. but she wanted me to pass on her thanks.

Thank you to all of your for your reponses. I have received emails from some members requesting a copy of the CD when it is done. Anyone else is free to indicate an interest at rocksbyjo@yahoo.ca. It is so exciting to speak with all of you..John spoke of all of you often..and yes..he was even honest and spoke of how sometimes he got himself into "hot water"... It was so nice to reconnect with him and to meet all of you. Thank you for your generosity and welcome..thank you so much for the information and the links to the photos and everything...I cannot tell you how delighted my husband was this morning when I was able to play Tribute to Newfoundland for him on CD. He misses Johnny very much. He explored the website with me this morning and shed a few tears but also had a lot of chuckles and good old Newfie belly laughs with all of you..Johnny used to ride with my husband on the harley..he so loved to go for a ride...drop into the pub with the helmet in hand...knowing all the women and men were checking out the "bikers" who just walked in...cant ya just picture it..lol..
thank you...all of you..for keeping him alive by memory and love and friendship. I look forward to getting his music on CD so we can all share his wonderful voice once again. ((not to mention generating some air time and royalties for his wife..lol))...I already have interested radio stations who wish to purchase the CD upon completion. This was Johns dream. We asked his wife if we could make his dream come true so that all of us out there who love John so much can keep him just a little bit closer. I look forward chatting with many of you. Katy (Johns daughter) is the one who directed me to this site...it is thanks to her that I was able to make my husbands dream of hearing John on CD a reality on April 04..his birthday is April 05!!!He misses the ole bugger too!!!lol
I will shaddup now..sorry for being so long winded...and yes...I do agree...that it is a bit odd to be stirring him up after all this time...kind of like makes me feel like he wanted us to all meet???Now I will REALLY shaddup.
Talk soon

Coincidentally, John's daughter, Katy, wrote to me early this morning to correct a transcription error in one of her dad's songs which was archived at GEST Songs of Newfoundland and Labrador prior to my taking the site over from Frank White in 2002.

Whoever contributed the lyrics transcribed "shingling sand" instead of "shingle and sand" as Johnny had written it. When I wrote back to confirm the correction, I told Katy I also added a definition of 'shingle' in a footnote for any future visitors, so there would be no future misunderstanding.

Then, tonight, I check in at the Mudcat and find all these additions to a five year old thread all about the man who, as can be easily seen from his song, was a most excellent songwriter.

I salute Little Johnny Cameron, a man I never knew, in the same spirit as he shared in his Tribute To Newfoundland.

Jo-Anne, one of the things that I do when one passes is to see if their voice goes on. It is the way that I know that folks haven't really left us, that they are with us in a real way. How sad it would be to know that when one breathes his/her last breath, all that they were and all that they did, died with them. The other side of that is the joy, just as you have shown us, when one realizes that their loved one lives on in the hearts of others. Little John is one of our most beloved members, and the years have not dimmed the memory of him. Rick Fielding was the friend of many here, and some of us spent considerable time with him. He used to talk of the Irish band he and John played in. He would joke about the Arran sweaters, and effecting phony Irish accents. He thought the world of John. And now the two of them are playing music together (told ya, Rick!!!).

God be good to the both of them.

Mick

Hi Jo-Anne.....I bet he's happy too that you found us. We were just talking in another thread this AM about 'Catters no longer with us and of course John came up right away. He and I shared a lot of varied interests not always common to the general "folkie" (whatever that is.....Is there one?......anyway)........Not long before he was hospitalized last he and I talked at length about a motorcycle he was thinking about acquiring.

Like many around the 'Cat we both loved writing and we had each surrounded our writings with a cast of characters based in reality but no one specifically. As Scots settled much of Appalachia and my characters were good ol' boys who had slipped through the crack in the American Dream, he thought there would be much humor in this clan from BOTH sides of the Atlantic, meeting after all these years and seeing where things led. It could have been hilarious and I will always regret we didn't get into some of it right away.

Thanks so much for coming by and sharing with us. Come back anytime just for yourself and enjoy the 'Cat as John did. We'd love to have you.

Spaw

*a few tears myself*

Jo-Anne...many of us felt like we knew him, as his wit and lust for life shone in his many postings. After 10 years, Mudcat has become quite a community, and like many communities, we lose a valued member sometimes.

It is with mixed emotions, as YOU know, that we are reminded...even more so because we can go back and read Johns words, just as he left them. I hope the tributes posted here really DO help his friends and family to realize how good the man was...even beyond what they knew..

Thank you for sharing your feelings....

today is april ..2007. People...no one in Johns family knew of this websites existence until two days ago. I was led to it today by an email from Johns daughter. You see...she knew too look for weeyin.
I found this tonight..As I write to you all i will say..I have looked over many conversations...and had many a chuckle with all of you. I knew John well too. His wife was overwhelmed by how many of you called her and sent her cards but she never knew how to respond to you. She doesnt use a computer and until two days ago..none of us knew about this website. I will be sure to hook up my printer and print off all of your messages if she wants me to. I will ask her. I have tears streaming down my face. You all loved him as much as all of us...THAT is so obvious in the readings. thank you so much for your shared memories via this website. I miss him so much as I am sure do all of you. Thank you so much for all of this. John will forever be remembered through the words of all of you ...his friends.
I promise to talk to his widow and ask her if she wishes to have a copy of all of this. After all this time I am sure you would all understand if she found it too hard. I have found it to be very very emotional but so very touching and wonderful at the same time. I was at his funeral service. I am not sure if any of you know any of the details. If you wish to know I would be more than willing to tell you. It was beautiful. So John. It was what he wanted. rocksbyjo@yahoo.ca. Well..I am crying my eyes out...but it is a good cry...you have all made me feel wonderful love and friendship ..
Wow you guys....I have to tell you..this has been very powerful...it is 2007!!!...THis many years later and John reaches out to me? I have been searching and searching for a fabulous webcam site for Loch ness and have never been able to find one..and tonight thru one of johns messages...that he left for a friend...lo and behold....tonight...April 2007...Johnny reached out and showed me the website and even the link to his song online...
People..i am amazed...but hell...anyone who knew John knew ..that was John...amazing

I hope i dont upset any of you by this being so many years later...but I do have to say..this has been a wonderful find. We thought he was fading into obscurity because no online details came up on a websearch for Little Johnny Cameron. Until one added "weeyin" ...here was nothing...and then ...voila...one finds you.

My husband and I are putting one of his albums to CD.
Email us if you wish any other contacts or information.

Thank you...and wow...this is amazing.

Sincerely

Jo-Anne Power

I knew John, briefly, many years ago, we both worked at the same company. I had known of him through his music and his time with the Sons of Erin, but it was a particular treat to sit in the lunch room and listen to his stories. I haven't seen him in nearly 20 years, but remember him fondly. Go in peace.

See what you lost when you left this world, this sweet old world
See what you lost when you left this world, this sweet old world
The breath from your own lips, the touch of fingertips
A sweet and tender kiss
The sound of a midnight train, wearing someone's ring
Someone calling your name
Somebody so warm cradled in your arm
Didn't you think you were worth anything
See what you lost when you left this world, this sweet old world
See what you lost when you left this world, this sweet old world...

Little John once composed a reworking of Hamlet's soliloquy in his own unique Scots dialect, and it was a treat to read. I wish I could find it and post it here. I thank him for the many amusing moments he gave to me and many others, and the many insights he provided. As far as I'm concerned, he will always be with us.

Tweed, thanks. First time I've heard him.

Seamus, I don't know that he thought he was leaving when he posted that poem. I don't have any idea if he got so sick all of a sudden or had been fighting it for a long time and just didn't want to deal with how folks would treat him. It seemed to me he was saying, in that message and that thread, just a little bit more than his opinion on "what happens when you die." He posted the poem without comment and when others discussed and argued, he let the poem stand on it's own.

The poem isn't primarily about what happens after death. It's the words of a dying man reassuring and comforting those left behind. So maybe he knew and maybe he hoped we'd find it again after he was gone. Maybe he didn't, but it's still a fine 'goodbye'.
