The death has been announced of the bandleader and trombonist Ray Coniff at the age of 85. Ray won a Grammy Award for his recording of "Somewhere My Love", the theme tune of "Dr Zhivago." In a career spanning six decades, he made over 100 recordings, including 25 Top 40 albums with ten gold and two platinum. I have childhhod memories of a week at Filey Butlins. Every morning at what seemed a very early hour we were woken by the Tannoy system blaring out Mr. Conniff's take on "Zip-a-dee-do-dah" For that alone RIP Mr. C.

Fiolar, what would we do without you?

Mudcat's own "Angel of Death"

I'm sorry to be so blunt here, but do we really need this?

In a word, yes. Some of us grew up listening to Ray Conniff, and his passing is a matter of interest.

I thought the fact had been pretty well established that not every thread here will be of interest to every member / visitor. For heaven's sake, if you see a thread that doesn't interest you, ignore it. Don't assume that it's not of interest to anyone.

Don't get me wrong, Ghost. I miss our lost artists, too, and pray for their families and friends - some of them move me right down to my toes. And, the Mudcat is sometimes the only place we hear of their passing. For that information, I'm grateful. I have nothing but admiration for Coniff's accomplishments and wish the best for his family. But that wasn't the reason for my post.

It's the idea that there's someone preoccupied with sifting the death notices in order to quickly broadcast the news to the Mudcat that I find morbid. There's quite a prior history of that here, but I've never said anything before.

I'm sorry, now I wish I hadn't mentioned it.

Tiger: No I'm not actually morbid as you claim. Out of the hundreds of folk in the entertainment business who pass away every year, I only list those who might be of interest in some ways to music fans as well as the film buffs. If folk are not interested, then don't read the item. I don't "sift" the death notices looking for tid-bits either but as a long term music and film fan, I hope that 'catters would like to know who has died so that they can post their condolences.
