Subject: Trip to Ireland Dec 4 thru 11

I'll be on vacation in Clare and maybe other Western counties on December 4th through the 11th, leaving for San Francisco on the 12th. I'll be travelling with fiddle and a concertina-playing friend. The off-season is the only time we could make the trip, but we also wanted to avoid the overcrowded sessions at peak season. We'll be ready for the cold, rainy weather, but we'll be playing the itinerary by ear, in a rented car. We arrive in Shannon. The first and last time I was in Ireland was at Willie Clancy week, 1989, so I'm not too familiar with the current session scene. Any suggestions on recommended sessions and on good places to eat? Will we find any 'Catters at those sessions? We will definitely make a trip to Custy's for CD's. I might have to bring an extra empty suitcase along for that! Thanks in advance.

Hi Chantyranger,
If you care to pop over the Shannon I can be found in John B's pub in Listowel, Co. Kerry.   Would be delighted to join you for a Christmas drink and a few tunes. M

If you find yourself in Galway the problem is to find a decent pub where there isn't a session.

Apart from the obvious venues in Doolin there is a nice wee session in Fitzgerald's Bar in Lahinch on a Sunday night led by Frank Custy.

If you get as far as Galway, try Regan's of Moycullen on Wednesday or Friday night. Nice friendly session. Wednesday usually quieter.

Check with me again nearer the date?

Regards

There are sessions in Ennis most nights of the week as far as I know. Ask in Custy's they should be able to fill you in. Paddy Quinn's on a Saturday night and Mickey Kerin's on a Friday are usually good for a tune (definitely during the summer, but I think all year round). Ciaran's which is directly opposite Custy's and Cruises around the corner from it are worth checking out. You won't find me there in December, but I'm hoping to get there for the Tradfest in November 7-11th. Details fo this are at www.ennistradfestival.com

My first attempt to use the make a blue clicky feature went wrong. I hope this works better.

If you're in KIlfenora (the Ceile Capitol of the world !) you can find reg sessions in Linnane's (Kitty's Corner) and Vaughans..the Ceili dancing session on THurs is a must..and not staged for the tourists..as so much is these days.
In Ennis, The Railway Bar on Sat nights..and every night in Cruise's Pub...you wont be short of music..but you will be short of money in the RIP-OFF Ireland of 2002.
Enjoy your trip...PJC
PS: ...and if you do go to Listowel..I can tell you that Chordstrangler will provoid a terrific night's entertainment...

Thanks, everyone! I will show this thread to my travelling companion and will try to make these sessions. PJ, is Linnane's owned by the fiddler Tony Linnane? Thanks again!

...and, are you the same PJ Curtis who wrote "Notes From The Heart"? That's a wonderful book.

Don't forget to go to Listowel! It's a lovely place and John B's pub is lovely too. I've a feeling I've probably met Chordstrangler, I've been over to Stay with my friend a few times now over the years, and he's a local fella from Listowel. We always find a session or two in the town.

We go to stay with at least once a year, (though has been 4 times a year) get our fix of Kerry and have a relaxed (and I mean layed back and relaxed) break. Though it's a bit of a hike from Wales, by the time we've done the 6 hour drive off the ferry it's always worth it.

Listowel is like a second home it's so welcoming. There's fab beaches to walk on (Ballyheigue or Ballybunnion) a short drive away, and then a gorgeous drive from Listowel to Dingle, over the Connor Pass, then around the Dingle Penninsula down to the Blasket Islands and back up.

I'm half thinking about moving out to Kerry, just thinking of the action plan, and ways and means of doing it... THough I'm not convinced there's a need for a graphic designer in Listowel.

ahhhhhhhhhhhhH! I'm so jealous. (But I'm off to Belfast in December though).

If you've got time, pop up to Lough Neagh - I hear the fishin's pretty good there. ;) BG

Seriously, hope you have a great time.

Chanteyranger,
Yes, I admit to being the author of 'Notes From The Heart'...
and so YOU must the person who bought the one copy sold....??
Linnane's Pub in Kilfenora is owned by Gerry Linnane,,a son of Kitty Linnane of The original Kilfenora Ceili Band.
Tony the fiddler..and Gerry are cousins....
I forgot to mention every other pub in Miltown malbay and Gary Peppers and Nora's Pub in Feakle ....
No shortage of good music in the banner County..as long as you keep away from any Hotel who advertises 'Trad Music Tonite!"
Happy journeys.
pjc

I'm biassed as hell, but the Lobby Bar in Cork does it for me, there's a great traditional record shop in McCurtain Street ( and the folk club's only a couple of hundred feet away ).
Have a great time!!
