Subject: RE: BS: Where is your computor? From: Bat Goddess Date: 24 Oct 02 - 03:11 PM Let's see, one is in my combination office, studio, laundry room and spare bedroom (1st floor) if I ever get all the boxes of chaserai off the built-in bed. The other major one (still not networked, though) is in the little room off the back door at the foot of the stairs that we USED to call the office (or, more appropriately in the winter, the walk-in) which is sort of a mini-library, and the other one (the antique kerosine-fired one) is behind Tom's spot at the table (next to the woodstove so he doesn't need mittens). Subject: RE: BS: Where is your computor? From: Stilly River Sage Date: 24 Oct 02 - 11:27 PM One in the office (newly remodeled in what used to be the garage. I leveled the floor and did this job right, so you'd never know a car used to park here), the old laptop is in the bedroom, and one on the table where the kids do their homework. That one is ancient, only does productivity software and runs an old ink jet printer. Honk honk! SRS |
Subject: RE: BS: Where is your computor? From: bflat Date: 25 Oct 02 - 12:04 AM I moved it to it's own room. I once kept it in my bedroom but the hard drive was always on and well you've got to get some sleep once in awhile. Ellen |

Subject: RE: BS: Where is your computor? From: bernil Date: 25 Oct 02 - 06:41 AM I've got my computer, 2 printers, scanner etc in the kithchen as it's the only room where the sockets are grounded/connected to eath. (don't really know how to say this but I'm reading my dictionary...) It would be too expensive for me to fix that in another room. In modern flats every room's sockets are grounded though. This gives me no place to eat here (got loads of papers, CDs and other stuff here too) so I have the dining table in the livingroom. People use to find it a bit strange but I'm very careful with electricity , magnetic fields and such. And it works for me! Berit in Sweden |
Subject: RE: BS: Where is your computor? From: Nigel Parsons Date: 25 Oct 02 - 06:52 AM bernil: one of the problems with Euro-land. The british are expected to follow any new rules brought out for the safety of all (whille the French ignore anything which will cost money). But for safety standards, all British power outlets are earthed (three pin plugs) and have been since the 1960s (except house which have not been re-wired during this period, but those are few). But Europe will not comply because the costs would be incurred by 'the mainland'. I remember playing on a pinball machine in Majorca, and getting electric shocks from the casing. Never play pinball in bare feet in a country with 2-pin sockets! Nigel |
Subject: RE: BS: Where is your computor? From: Mr Red Date: 25 Oct 02 - 07:58 AM right now I am at the college library, sometimes at the local library. At home it is is in the lounge and doubles as my TV. Do I mention the video editing machine - it has no modem and kept safe from viruses that way. I do have a 386 laptop in the kitchen. My wristwatch doubles as diary/telephone directory and calculator and that is on my ......... am I too PC? |
Subject: RE: BS: Where is your computor? From: Stilly River Sage Date: 25 Oct 02 - 10:52 AM In the U.S. those three-pronged plugs are referred to a "grounded." You want the ground (not to be confused with the past tense of "grind") to be plugged in, not by-passed with those orange adaptors that used to be sold readily in hardware stores (idea being you would use the screw from the wallplate with a little tab on the adaptor and provide an alternate ground). If you can get a power supply (which doesn't actually supply power, but simply manages all of the plugs in one place, and everything can be turned off with a master switch) you'll save your computer and periferals the damage of an energy surge. That's about all I know about electricity in a nutshell. SRS |

Subject: RE: BS: Where is your computor? From: JudeL Date: 26 Oct 02 - 06:08 AM I have everything connected via a multisocket surge protection extension lead that protects against spikes not only on the electricity line but also down the phone line. I started doing this after there was a thunder storm and a spike came down the phone line which fried the internal modem and took out the part of the board that it was plugged into with it.... I had to replace not only the modem but the motherboard, and because the motherboard was quite old there were a number of other bits that I ended up having to replace as they no longer made a motherboard with which they were compatible. All in all very expensive! OK so it was an upgraded system but I had been content with what I had. £25 for a surge protected multisocket from B&Q is a lot cheaper. |
Subject: RE: BS: Where is your computor? From: Mr Red Date: 26 Oct 02 - 08:30 PM JudeL I dont want to be too alarmist but surge protectors are only a brick wall. They stop cars and light vans but jugonauts come sailing through. Think of it as a percentage shot - it will protect more times than no protection but a million amps gotta go somewhere. If you think the thunderstrom is coming your way disconnect the phone line - and save the answer machine at the same time. Oh and if they do their job well enough they take the hit instead - so they will need replacing after a hit. |
Subject: RE: BS: Where is your computor? From: Liz the Squeak Date: 27 Oct 02 - 05:42 AM Back bedroom on a specially made shelving unit, along with printer, scanner, speakers, thousands of bits of paper and 5 dragons. Keyboard is on a separate table (eyesight means I need to be a good 3ft away from my screen or else I get migraines) just in front. There are 3 extension leads with 4 plugs each... if we rewired our house we'd have to have an entire wall covered in plugs! LTS |
Subject: RE: BS: Where is your computor? We too have realized that should we rewire the place we're going to need an inordinate amount of plug/sockets wired in. Technology eh? TTFN M'Lady P. |
Subject: RE: BS: Where is your computor? From: Mooh Date: 27 Oct 02 - 09:57 AM We have discussed this before, but mine keeps moving with various home renovation projects. The computer is back in what was once a walkin closet, then my teaching studio, now my wife's study/sewing/hobbie/storage room. This room has an outside door to the deck and an inside door to my current teaching studio. The only window is in the door, but I can see the yard, let the animals in and out, and get fresh air without getting out of my seat. My instruments are handy, as is the stereo, and I often play as I use the 'puter. Peace, Mooh. |

Subject: RE: BS: Where is your computor? From: bernil Date: 27 Oct 02 - 10:49 AM Mr Red, you don't have to worry about my arrangement as this is the part of the kitchen where the dining table should be placed and it's not near any water. I feel safe here but also have good control over my cooking while I'm surfing! Berit |
